4.0 von 5 Sternen Good introduction to Java, 5. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: PRO JAVA SERV, (Taschenbuch)
This a good book to get ramped up on Java. The chapters can be a bit lengthy but the examples are very clear and well explained. The language is simple and all the Java concepts are discussed in detail.
However, this book on its own is not sufficient. It does list out the complete JDK 1.2 API and I find myself having to refer to Sun's java site to get the complete API specifications.
But overall, I'd still recommend this book to others wanting to dive into the world of Java.

I purchased this pocket reference as i needed to do some programming on a unix box and had not used vi before. This book was a total blessing, I was able to get instant answers on what commands I needed.
This book helped me get the job done quickly and I no longer pull my hair out when I use vi. Thanks O'reilly !

I have been searching a long time for a book (or article) that covered the Microsoft solutions suite for e-commerce but had no luck. Finally, a collegue of mine at work recommended this to me and I'm glad to say that my search has finally ended.
This book explains how all the different microsoft technologies piece together and the functions each of them serve. There were certain things I didn't quite like about the book however. I thought the chapter covering asp and html was unnecessary as you cannot pack those two into a single chapter each. That would have dropped some weight and $$ off this book too.
If you are looking to learn about e-commerce infrastructures and also what it takes to set up a site using the microsoft dna, then this is THE book to refer to. You do not have to read this chapter by chapter (I didn't) as each chapter is self-contained.
And here's something else you might find useful too. If you are about to implement a site using the microsoft dna, then go the [...] site too. Much of this book is covered by those free online seminars and you'll also get handy security and performance tuning tips (but still get the book, it's a good one to read on the bus/train).
Good Luck !

Programming Perl (Nutshell Handbook)
Programming Perl (Nutshell Handbook)

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Reference Book, 5. Februar 2000
This is an excellent companion to the Learing Perl book (also by O'Reilly). If you are new to Perl like I was not too long ago, then start with the Learning Perl book first before you touch this one.
This book is intended to serve as a reference as it tackles the more complicated aspects of Perl. If you start learning Perl with this book, then you will find it a very difficult language to graps. However, I do not want to take anything away from this book. This book is fantastic for those who want to dive into Perl a bit more and have passed the beginners level. I purchased both the books and once I had finished reading the Learning Perl book, I started turning to this book to get a better understanding of things, especially regular expressions.

This book fails its purpose. The layout of the info is all wrong and there is no gentle step-through. I bought the book because other books I bought (SQL, VB) in the Sams series have taught me well.
If you are new to ASP and pick up this book, you will find to be a very difficult language to learn simply because this book rushes into things too quickly and leaves the reader quite baffled.
If you want to learn ASP and if you want to learn it well, buy the Beginning Active Server Pages book by Wrox. That was the book I used to pick up ASP I still flip through it every now and again.

This book is an excellent way to ramp up on Perl quickly. It takes you through the in's and out's of Perl at a wonderful pace and covers most of what you need to know. This is the book to get if you're new to Perl and need to learn it quickly. The 200 or so pages are readable in less than a week.
However, there are a few important things to note. This is not a standalone book. You will need to get the Programming in Perl book as well to serve as a reference guide. Also, this book assumes basic Unix knowledge. If you have no exposure to Unix, a couple of things (very minor though) might be a bit baffling. If you've played with Unix, then this book is a breeze.
I managed to ramp myself up on Perl and start writing some sweet scripts within a week. I also bought the Programming in Perl book and now I turn to that book for the more heavy duty stuff.
The long and short of it: this is the best beginners book around for Perl.
