Mel Brown was a great guitar player. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi and moved to Los Angeles, California there he became a much appreciated session player covering virtually all music styles. He played on blues records by T-Bone Walker, B B King and John Lee Hooker as well as on many pop and jazz sessions. Mel Brown recorded five albums under his own name for the Impulse label and two of them have been re-released on this CD. His solo recordings are very tasteful with his soulful jazz-blues guitar sounds. The songs are instrumentals and gives him plenty of opportunities to display his innovative funky guitar style.

The album Chicken Fat has been re-released earlier, let us hope that the remaining Impulse recordings are released in a not too distant future.

Being a big fan of Michael Bloomfield since I was a teenager I had great expectations when I heard about this CD/DVD box. The music on the three CDs shows the scope of Bloomfield's talent. When it comes to playing the blues he was without doubt one of the very best. He had the technique and the taste to create and communicate great music. This release provides examples from his entire career: His early recordings, some tracks from when Bloomfield was a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the Electric Flag, the jam sessions with Al Kooper, live recordings with Nick Gravenites as vocalist (in my personal opinion the best tracks) and later material. The DVD featuring both music and interviews is a pleasure to watch. There is also a booklet in the package with very nice pictures. This box is an absolute must for fans of Michael Bloomfield.
