1.0 von 5 Sternen Boney M. "Hits and Classics": Another missed opportunity!, 2. März 2014
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Hits & Classics (Audio CD)
Be aware! This is a re-release of the 2012 2CD compilation “The Essential” (Sony Music 8872546436-2).

This re-release has been released as a 3CD compilation, but contains the same number of tracks as the 2CD “The Essential”. The 3CD set has 12 on each CD.

The running order is different on the 3CD set, but that does not help anything at all. “The Essential” had a chronological running order, but on this release the tracks have just been thrown together without any thoughts.

It’s a miserable collection with a photo on the cover that already has been used on several Boney M. compilations.
Therefore the same review as “The Essential”:

Sony Music has probably had good intentions on this compilation. However they fail miserably, as usual when it comes to Boney M.

Yet another compilation that's including edits and remixes. How can it be so hard to get the original single versions or LP-versions on a compilation? If Sony Music had had a little interest in Boney M. it would not have been difficult at all.

CD 1:
"Gotta Go Home". Here included in an edited 2:50 minutes version. Taken from the 1992 "Gold" compilation. The original single version is running 4:01 minutes. The original LP-version is: 3:45 minutes.

"No Women No Cry" is not the original single- or LP-version which is running 5 minutes. It's an edit as well as a remixed version from the "Gold" compilation running 4:20 minutes

CD 2:
And now to the real DISASTER! "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" one of the group's biggest hits ever is also included in an edited and remixed version. The original single version that went to no. 1 in England in 1978 was running 5:43 minutes - a true master piece. The version included on this compilation is ONLY 4:01. Yet another edit and remixed version from the "Gold" compilation. It honestly stinks. In the included version Maria and Joseph never make it to Bethlehem which means that Jesus never was born and there's therefore actually nothing to sing about! Over half of the story has been cut out. How is that possible?

"El Lute", yet the same story. An edited and remixed version from "Gold" running 3:58 minutes. The original single version is 5:09 minutes. The original LP-version is 5:50 minutes.

"Going Back West" is included as single-version which is fair enough. But what about "The Carnival Is Over" which was the A-side to "Going Back West"?

CD 3:
"Happy Song" is yet another edit running 3:56 minutes. The original single version is running 4:18 minutes.

What's "Stories" doing on the compilation? It's not even the original lineup.

"Rasputin" one of their greatest singles. It's neither the single version nor LP-version included here. The original single version is 4:43 minutes. Here is another edit and remixed version from "Gold" running only 4:25 minutes.
Sony Music seems to enjoy the use of the "Gold" compilation from 1992 ("The Magic Of Boney M." from 2006) when putting together new compilations. Note! All tracks from the "Gold" compilation are remixes as the tracks have been added extra drumbeats and hi-hats.

5 tracks on this collection are remixes: “MegaMix” (CD 1), “Ma Baker” (Boney M. vs. Sash) (CD 3), “Daddy Cool ’99” (CD 3), “Brown Girl In The Ring ‘93” (CD 3) and “Barbra Streisand” (CD 1). What are they doing here? Original material from the Boney M. catalogue 1975 - 1986 would have been preferred.

Suggestions to Sony Music: Stay away from remixes and EDITED versions. Do NOT master a compilation using "Gold", "More Gold" or "The Magic Of Boney M." as sources. As a matter of fact, don't compile a Boney M. compilation using other compilations unless it's done by supervision by someone who knows the Boney M. catalogue!

This compilation gets one star less than the original release from 2012 (“The Essential”), because the tracks have been thrown together without any thoughs towards the Boney M. legacy at all.

Go for the budget Boney M. releases "The Collection"(3CD) or "Let It All Be Music (The Party Album)" (2CD) instead - all including original single- and LP-versions, as well as a few exciting alternate versions. Or the box with all the original albums "The Complete Boney M." (8CD). If you are into the Christmas material, then go for "Feliz Navidad - A Wonderful Christmas" (2 CD), despite having a totally wrong photo on the cover for a Christmas release.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great Boney M. compilation, 10. November 2013
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Collection (Audio CD)
As a budget release this compilation is truly amazing.

Usually the Boney M. compilations released by Sony Music contain edits (shortened versions), but that's not the case here.

Here's a compilation including 3 CD's and not one edit at all! Only original single-, LP- and maxi-versions.

Out of the 36 tracks on the compilation, 17 tracks are previously unreleased CD.

"The Collection" is including material from the original Boney M. period 1976 - 1986.

CD 1 (The seventies) contains 2 previously unreleased versions: the single-versions of "Rasputin" and "Bahama Mama".

CD 2 (The eighties) contains 7 previously unreleased versions: "Daddy Cool (Anniversary Recording '86)", "Malaika", "Boonoonoonoos", "Going Back West", "Consuela Biaz", "Bang Bang Lulu" and "Somewhere In The World".

CD 3 (The best 12" versions) with the maxi-versions contains 8 previously unreleased versions out of 8 tracks on the CD.

At the time of this release the original master for "Ribbons Of Blue" was not found. Therefore it has been included as the 1993-version (also known as "More Gold" version). It's still the full length version, but with some extra hi-hats/drum-beats.

Personally I would have preferred "Dreadlock Holiday" included as the original album version with Reggie Tsiboe on lead and not the so called Top-Deck version with Frank Farian on lead. But that's also the only thing I would have liked to see different on this compilation.

But when thinking of that it's a budget release I can't put a finger on the compilation at all.

This is how I like to see a Boney M. compilation compiled.

Thanks to the compiler of this Boney M. compilation: Frank Eberlein. There's no doubt about he has put a lot of hard work into this compilation. The Boney M. catalogue is a very complex one and Frank has shown he knows how to deal with it.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Boney M. "Platinum Hits": Yet another Boney M. compilation with edits., 11. Oktober 2013
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Platinum Hits (Audio CD)
This compilation is yet another Boney M. compilation that's including mainly edits (of the original material) as well as a few remixes. Therefore it fails.

The music on this compilation is still good as the Boney M. material speaks for itself, but if you want the original material in original length (single- and album-versions) with Boney M. that went to the top of the charts back in the seventies/eighties, then stay away from this release and go for the compilations mentioned in the end of this review.

The normal record buyer may not notice it, but the greatest part of the single hits/releases on this compilation are mastered from another compilation that was including edits (an entire album where the original tracks had been edited down in time). An edit means that a song has been shortened (verses cut out, instrumental parts removed etc.). But why do that, when the original material should speak for itself?

The Boney M. catalogue is very complex because their material has been twisted and shorted in every way possible. Unfortunately Demon Music Group who compiled this compilation wasn't aware of the complex Boney M. catalogue.

On the Demon Music Group web-site, they have the following statement about their Music Club Deluxe series:

"With over a million units sold and more than a 100 titles, Music Club Deluxe is DMG's outstanding mid-priced 2CD single artist range. It boasts top quality repertoire from household names with selections and sleeve notes by experts for novices and fans alike and striking artwork with slip-cased packaging."

Because of the statement above, one can only wonder why the liner-notes of this compilation have several mistakes during the storyline? And not to forget: Why has this compilation not only been compiled of the original Boney M. material in non-edited versions (single- and LP-versions) from the glorious seventies/early eighties? Using mainly edits as on this compilation seems wrong.

The label on front of the compilation states: " All Their Hits", but that isn't quite true. Several tracks are missing ("My Friend Jack/I See A Boat On The River", "Children Of Paradise" to name a few). Some of the groups other single releases that did not enter the U.K. charts is however to be found on the album ("Baby Do You Wanna Bump", "Kalimba De Luna").

Unfortunately Demon Music Group has not been aware of that they had their hands on the wrong sources when compiling this compilation. Or were they aware? Is it all about easy money and no interest in the Boney M. legacy?

The cover is looking really good and it's nice with the use of the original Boney M. logo, but the content on the CD's isn't satisfying, simply because of using edits. It could have been a very nice compilation, if all the tracks were in full length/original length.

A few notes about the mistakes on this compilation:

CD1:

"Nightflight To Venus" is an edit running only 3:49. The original and most common album-version of "Nightflight To Venus" is running 4:47 which means that a complete minute is missing here.

"Sunny" the group's second Top 10 hit in England is another edit running only 3:15. The original single- and LP-version is 4:01. Yet again almost a complete minute has been cut out.

"Ma Baker" the group's third Top 10 hit in England is yet another edit running only 3:45. The original single- and album-version is 4:34. Again, almost a complete minute of this master piece has been cut out.

"Rasputin" the group's sixth Top 10 hit in England has also suffered badly. Yet another edit. The version on this compilation is 3:44, but the original single-version is 4:43. 1 minute has been cut out of "Rasputin".

"Belfast" is a remix version from 1992 (Known as "Gold" version with extra hi-hats etc.). Not the original 1977 single-/LP-version.

"No Women No Cry" is yet another edit running 3:32. The original 1976 version is 4:55. It means that over 1 minute and 20 seconds has been edited out.

"Heart Of Gold" is a remix from 2000 and not the original 1978 version from "Nightflight To Venus". This version is running 3:35, the original 1978 version is 4:05.

"Love For Sale" - the title track from the group's second album from 1977 is a 1993 remix and an edit as well (Known as "More Gold" version). This remix version is running 4:13. The original album version is 4:41.

"Dancing In The Streets" has been included in the original 12" version (6:22). One could only wonder why. The original single-version, running 3:58, would have been better for this compilation.

"Exodus" is the album-version and not the single-version. "Exodus" is taken from the 1984 album "10.000 Lightyears". Exodus was a part of a medley together with "Wild Planet". When they fade "Exodus" on this compilation you have already heard the first bars of "Wild Planet". The single-version of Exodus should have been used.

"Somewhere In The World" - the A-side of "Exodus" is another edit. Here in a 4:10 version. The original single-version is 4:28.

CD 2:

"Rivers Of Babylon" - a U.K. no. 1 and a million seller has not even been included in the version that went to the top in 1978. This is another edit! The original single-version from 1978 is 4:19, the version used here is only 4:00.

"Hooray! Hooray! It's A Holi- Holiday" a U.K. Top 3 has once again been suffering bad! The version on this compilation is only 3:11. The version that went to the Top 3 in 1979 is running 3:55.

"Kalimba De Luna" yet another remix from 1992 (Known as "Gold" version) and edit running 3:48. The original 1984 track is 4:31.

"Oceans Of Fantasy" the title track from the group's fourth album and second U.K. no. 1 album is only 3:21. The original album version is 5:05. There is missing 1 minute and 40 seconds of the track!

"El Lute" the B-side of the 1979 single "Gotta Go Home" is also an edit, as well as a remix. On this compilation it's running 4:01. As the B-side of "Gotta Go Home" "El Lute" is 5:09.

"Dreadlock Holiday" is not the original 1985 version, but a remix (known as "TopDeck" version") taken from a 1993 compilation.

"Ribbons Of Blue", one of the group's finest tracks, as well as the B-side of "Hooray! Hooray! It's A Holi- Holiday" is only running 3:05. Original single version from 1979 is 4:07.

"Young Free & Single" is the album version running 4:11, and not the single version: 4:18.

It has to be added that strangely enough, Demon Music Group has managed to use the original single-version of the U.K. 1978 Christmas chart-topper "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord". A true master piece.

The CD in this box is a re-release of: "Best of Boney M." (original released on 24th August 2012), that also was released as "All Time Best" (released on 1st March 2013).

This third edition comes with a DVD that has been released under many different titles as well. Nothing new here at all.

The CD could have been rather nice, if the right versions had been used.

Unfortunately Sony Music fails once again to compile a Boney M. compilation. And yet again Sony Music shows no sign in designing a beautiful cover. The 1988 photo they have used is actually not very nice at all. How hard can it be to find good photos of Boney M. that hasn't been used for a CD before? That shouldn't be very difficult.

It's seems as if Sony Music has been aiming for a chronological order, but yet they fail.

This time Sony has been fond of using the re-master editions of the original albums to compile this "Best Of" collection. Luckily enough that gives us the original single-version of "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" (Bonus track on the re-mastered edition of "Nightflight To Venus"). Usually that tracks is included as an edit on compilations.

However the use of LP-versions makes this "Best Of..." a bit strange at some places.

The opener "Baby Do You Wanna Bump" is the LP-version from 1976 is running 6:53. The 3:42 single-version from 1975 would have been preferred.

"Daddy Cool" is NOT the original single-version/original LP-version. It's a 1992 REMIX from the "Gold" compilation. HOW did that end up here?

"Rasputin" is the LP-version 5:52. They should have used the original single-version from 1978 that's running 4:43 instead. Sony Music seems NOT to have been aware of that the LP-version of "Rasputin" is a part of a medley with "Nightflight To Venus". That means that the included version of "Rasputin" on this compilation starts ABRUPTLY!

"El Lute" is the album-version running 5:50. The original single-version from 1979 running 5:09 would have been preferred.

"Gotta Go Home" is the album-version 3:45. Single-version from 1979 would have been preferred 4:01.

"Bahama Mama" " is the album-version 3:16. The original single-version from 1979 running 3:36 would have been preferred.

"I See A Boat On The River" is a 1993 remix from "More Gold".

"Kalimba De Luna" is a 12" version (maxi) running 7:18. The original single-version from 1984 running 4:31 would have been the right version to use. A 12" version does not fit this compilation.

"Barbara Streisand vs. Marilyn Monroe (Club Mix)" should have been left out. Not an original track. Always stick to the original material from 1975 - 1986.

Running order should have been (with correction of versions: *):

1. "Baby, Do You Wanna Bump" Original single-version 1975. *
2. "Daddy Cool" Original 1976 version. *
3. "Sunny"
4. "Ma Baker"
5. "Belfast"
6. "Rivers Of Babylon"
7. "Rasputin" Original single-version 1978. *
8. "Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord"
9. "Hooray! Hooray! It's A Holi- Holiday"
10. "El Lute" Original single-version 1979. *
11. "Gotta Go Home" Original single-version 1979. *
12. "Bahama Mama" Original single-version 1979. *
13. "Calendar Song"
14. "I See A Boat On The River" Original single-version 1980. *
15. "Felicidad"
16. "Kalimba De Luna" Original single-version 1984. *

The compilation starts out with the first Boney M. single ever to be released in 1975: "Baby Do You Wanna Bump". Strangely enough they have managed to include the original single version of this track and not the edited and remixed version from the "Gold" compilation from 1992 or the re-release of "Gold" from 2006: "The Magic Of Boney M.". But it all soon changes!

Sony Music seems to enjoy the use of the "Gold" compilation from 1992 ("The Magic Of Boney M." from 2006) when putting together new compilations. Note! All tracks from the "Gold" compilation are remixes as the tracks have been added extra drumbeats and hi-hats.

Some of the serious errors on "The Essential":

CD 1:
"No Women No Cry" is not the original single- or LP-version which is running 5 minutes. It's an edit as well as a remixed version from the "Gold" compilation running 4:20 minutes.

The same goes for "Rasputin" one of their greatest singles. It's neither the single version nor LP-version included here. The original single version is 4:43 minutes. Here is another edit and remixed version from "Gold" running only 4:25 minutes.

"Gotta Go Home" gets the same treatment. Here included in an edited 2:50 minutes version. Yet again from the "Gold" compilation. The original single version is running 4:01 minutes. The original LP-version is: 3:45 minutes.

"El Lute", yet the same story. An edited and remixed version from "Gold" running 3:58 minutes. The original single version is 5:09 minutes. The original LP-version is 5:50 minutes.

CD 2:

The first CD was running a chronological order ("No Women No Cry" should have followed "Daddy Cool" on CD 1, as it was the B-side of "Daddy Cool". Looking form a chronological order of Boney M.'s debut album "Take The Heat Off Me" the running order on this compilation could be accepted). If they wanted to do the same with CD 2, it should have started out with "Gadda-Da-Vida" followed by "Felicidad" and not the other way around.

"Going Back West" is included as single-version which is fair enough. But what about "The Carnival Is Over" which was the A-side to "Going Back West"?

"Happy Song" is yet another edit running 3:56 minutes. The original single version is running 4:18 minutes.

What's "Stories" doing on the compilation? It's not even the original lineup.

The last 5 tracks on CD 2 are remixes. What are they doing here? Original material from the Boney M. catalogue 1975 - 1986 would have been preferred. Despite the remixes are not worth mentioning at all, it however has to be mentioned that track no. 13: "Megamix" is NOT the 1988 "MegaMix" (reunion version) as stated in the inlay. As a matter of fact it's a 2006 "MegaMix". Once again the order of the tracks on CD 2 is wrong.

Suggestions to Sony Music: Stay away from remixes and EDITED versions. Do NOT master a compilation using "Gold", "More Gold" or "The Magic Of Boney M." as sources. As a matter of fact, don't compile a Boney M. compilation using other compilations unless it's done by supervision by someone who knows the Boney M. catalogue!

"Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord" one of Boney M.'s biggest hits ever is here to be found in an edited version.

The original single-version that went to no. 1 in England in 1978 was running 5:43 minutes - a true master piece. The version included on this compilation is ONLY 5:09. It's an edited and remixed version from 1992.

Go for the original single-version that's to be found on the re-master of "Nightflight To Venus" as a bonus-track or from the box: "The Complete Boney M.".
