5.0 von 5 Sternen Good, if a bit standard epic fantasy, 4. April 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
In my opinion, this book is a good read, the story is balanced in exposition and action, the world and its mechanics are interesting and there is even a bit of character development (jokes). SPOILER If only it wouldn't have reverse the bad things happened, this book would've distinguished itself from other standard fantasy novels, but I don't see it as a bad thing, since I was looking for exactly that.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Epic, elaborate work, 13. Februar 2014

The epic fantasy genre is highly standardized. This book keeps to them, but the interesting world and good writing make it a very fun and entertaining read.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome to a point, 13. Februar 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Its an awesome, imaginative, unusual book. I found the combination of Fantasy, Detective and Sci-Fi to be really enticing. This book is a must if, even if you do not like any of the mentioned genres. The only hiccup in this book is the evolution of the story to the Merlin's point of view. At this point I my impression was, that author was done with new and started to copy his best ideas, switching the main character from Corwin to Merlin.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good but..., 30. November 2012
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This is good fantasy. It reminds me of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. It is not a standard fantasy where you just relax your brain and enjoy. But. It has issues that will repel some and bate others.

Author made a great job, that's unquestionable. He describes his characters rigorously, relentlessly, (by that i mean that he doesn't miss a chance to at least mention, if not paint vividly their favorite food, clothes and bathroom rituals), assigns them a long/short part to play and a certain degree of black-and-white and then he kills them off, describing it with various degrees of violence and detail. This series hooked me by "honesty" and "realism" of it and the its telling the story from different points-of-view and geography. First 2 books use it to the full and exhaust its charm. While reading them, I was reading every word and checking the map of the world constantly. I finished 2nd book only to find 3rd full of more word painting of meals, landscapes, bathrooms, wardrobes spiced by bits of worlds history and story lines. If in first 2 books it was bringing its own kicks and world was not yet familiar, 3rd and 4th put reader trough hell. But the story hooks and you read again the description of Eyrie, Kings Landing, Wall... and more feasts, more horrors of war, more landscapes. Martin split 4th book in two, for there was too much that he wanted to tell for one book. In 4th book there didnt happen much, though much was eaten, washed down, admired, observed, glimpsed, spotted... and a few died. I still want to find out all the story, but now it seems more as if Martin works, not creates. When you will get used to the style, you will also start to predict where the story's going and since 5th book got the same comments from fellow readers...
