2.0 von 5 Sternen Cough, cough, cough! And another cough!, 7. September 2014
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Brahms:Pno Con No.1 in d-Min15 (Audio CD)
My critic goes here to the public and not to the interpretation, as strange as it may seem. Influenced by Mr. Gould, this Brahms Piano Concerto diverges significantly from the standard interpretations, which I believe is very interesting and an absolute valid view of this work. If it were only for the music, I would have given it 5*.

Unfortunately, this concert was assaulted by the audience coughing almost permanently. After a few minutes it just gets unbearable to listen to the music. I wonder what was going on in there. It seams almost like a bad joke but, joke or not, it spoils everything.

Very impressive are the two comments, one at the beginning by Mr. Bernstein directed to the audience, and one at the end by Gould in a private interview, both referring to that specific interpretation.

This is a very good product. Out of leather, it is very well made, looks extremely elegant and is very functional too. The case fits the BQ Aquaris 5 like a glove, as it should. To take it out, you can pull a strap and it slides out easily. When inside the case, it is secure.

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you have doubts about religion, read this book. If you don’t, read it too!, 31. Juli 2014
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Der Gotteswahn (Taschenbuch)
I need no conversion, indoctrination or to be convinced that there is no God, since I have been an atheist almost all of my live, in spite of being born in a catholic household. So, when I picked up this book in a bookstore in Rome, I did it just out of curiosity. And it was a ‘blessing’, first because it is a very interesting book indeed and secondly, because it put me in contact with the scientific work of professor Dawkins, which I intend to read in a very near future (The Magic of Reality, The Selfish Gene, and The Ancestor's Tale).

So, if you are an atheist like me, you will find yourself agreeing with the rational, logical and sane argumentation again and again. Everything will be obvious, so crystal clear, and you just wonder how incredible it is that such evidences and common sense are not shared by everybody. But even for an atheist, this book has magnificent moments of discovery, not only in the field of religion, but also in the field of history, psychology or science. And of course, at the end you will be even more enlightened as a non-believer and reinforced in your ‘believes’ and rationality.

If you are someone religious but with doubts, who feels that something is not right about religious teachings, someone curious about how the atheistic view works, then this is the book for you. The only thing I can wish for, is that at the end you will be in a position to make your own choices, and free yourself from the choices that others made for you when you were probably too young and helpless to defend yourself against nonsense religious brain-wash. This book is your chance of freeing yourself from the claws of religion, any religion, and to build a real and beautiful image of the world and everything attached to it.

If you are heavy believer, one of those persons with no doubts whatsoever, who knows without flinching what’s right and wrong for yourself and everybody else, then you could read this book too, just for the sheer pleasure of imagining professor Dawkins or myself, suffering the tortures of hell for all eternity to come.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Precise and sturdy!, 28. Juni 2014

I am using this beard trimmer since two years now almost once a week and all I can say is that I am completely satisfied. I use it at home and on voyage.

The machine itself is Hungary made but uses a very good German made blade, very precise and safe, which did not loose its cutting ability until now. I let the machine once fall on the floor without any noticeable damage. A sturdy piece of equipment indeed. And it looks good.

You can easily regulate the cutting from 2 up to 21 mm. In between you have 4, 7, 10, 13 and 17 mm. If you need to use the blade directly at your skin there is no problem whatsoever. You will not get cut. And it fits your hand perfectly. Not too light, not too heavy. Just right. 152 g.

I'm very happy with it. And for the price, it's a bargain!

Stalingrad
Stalingrad
von Antony Beevor
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 11,90

5.0 von 5 Sternen David against Goliath or the demolition of the Sixth Army., 6. Mai 2014
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Stalingrad (Taschenbuch)
Anthony Beevor is an excellent writer and this book, in spite of its true horrors, reads almost like a romance. The author refrains from entering the subjective terrain remaining almost always very factual. You will find here more honesty and competence and less new theoretical advances or formulations. Superbly researched, it flows smoothly from the beginning of operation Barbarossa into the deadly Stalingrad trap which cost the lives of thousands and ended in the annihilation of the Sixth Army, giving way to the psychological turning point of the war.

Logically divided and thus very easy to follow, it is rich in historical and military detail, never forgetting to enhance the human tragedy, either of civilians or combatants. You feel the tears running down the pages and the buildings crashing in your hands, and you ask yourself over and over how could men have endured such a calamity and how it was possible for this madness to have taken place just 70 years ago.

The rhythm of this dramatic tale is voracious, with tensions giving way to higher tensions which in turn explode into a never ending spiral of unheard violence. You despair with Chuikov and Paulus in their bunkers and the "Rattenkrieg" takes completely hold of your mind. Page after page you are pushed toward the end until there is nothing more left to read, just like there was no more city to see.

There are some critics in a few reviews accusing Beevor of taking the German side and being unfair and untrue when depicting the Russians. Well, all I can say is that they must have read another book, because after reading this one, I was left with an heroic image of the Russian army and with the impression that only the Russian soldier could have faced such a ferocious enemy and win.

A magnificent book.

Geschichte des Zweiten Weltkriegs, Band 1 und Band 2
Geschichte des Zweiten Weltkriegs, Band 1 und Band 2

3.0 von 5 Sternen The unbalanced account of the Second World War., 4. Mai 2014
Preliminary Note: This is a serious and honest review. So, if you are one of those individuals who do not acknowledge the Holocaust, please don’t bother and stop reading here.

When you pick up a book dealing with the Second World War and on the index Khrushchev is lacking, Chuikov appears only once, but Rommel fills three times the space of Roosevelt, four times that of Stalin and ten times that of Zhukov, you know this is going to be a very particular reading. And so it was.

To make a very long story short, there is no doubt that Liddell Hart is absolutely sublime in the way he writes the history of this war, with amazing detail and insight, always very clear and wise in his judgments. In spite of plenty considerations concerning politics and grand strategy, this is mainly a tactics/strategy focused history which could feel sometimes too overwhelming for those more interested in a more fluid and global picture of the events. On the other hand, the military ‘fanatic’ will surely be provided with many hours of delightful reading.

Who am I to argue with a master of the military? A nobody, really. But in any case, if I’m allowed to express my opinion, I would like to say that, in a book dedicated to the Second World War, giving much more relevance to the North African campaign than to the Russian one is difficult to comprehend. In this respect, I would have liked at least to have seen the same level of information, detail and engagement being given to the Eastern Front. One could almost say it’s a moral issue. But this I can excuse. Liddell Hart is British and the North African campaign had a special significance to the UK. And he adored Rommel.

What I cannot excuse is no mention whatsoever about the Holocaust and all the genocidal massacres committed by the German ‘Einsatztruppen SS’ in the East. Not once in the book is the word Jew mentioned. Not once. One could argue that this was a side effect of the war and not the central theme. But it was the war in the first place that provided the tools for all those atrocities to be committed in grand scale, everything backed up indirectly (and sometimes directly) by the ‘Wehrmacht’. The Second World War cannot simply be disassociated from it, and I find it truly immoral to ignore this topic in the book, which had everything to gain with its inclusion.

This is why I cannot rate this book with more than 3 stars. A pity really, because it deserved more.
