5.0 von 5 Sternen Gute Einführung in UDK, 9. April 2014

April 2014

5.0 von 5 Sternen A must-have for WPF developers, 19. Dezember 2013

I recently got into Windows desktop programming using c# and WPF. Coming from C++ and QT background, I did not really know .NET and WPF at all. Both technologies are quite complex and introduce a few concepts (like the MVVM model and XAML), so the learning curve is quite steep for any newbie.

This is where the book really shines. I think it is easily one of the best coding books I have ever read. It is noticeable that the author really knows his stuff and can draw from a lot of experience. Also, he has structured the book in a logical way, i.e. introducing the core concepts behind WPF before diving into the API and the coding. This is crucial as you will make critical mistakes if you start coding before you understand the architecture well enough (I learned the hard way ;).

Also notheworthy are the "Digging Deeper", "Warning" and "Tip" textboxes throughout the book. They provide in-depth information about a topic, warn about common pitfalls or provide general tips and best practice advice for using a certain piece of technology.

By the way: The book is in full color, which makes it great to read (you get the proper syntax highlighting).

Ride: Futuristic Electric Motorcycle Concept
Ride: Futuristic Electric Motorcycle Concept

3.0 von 5 Sternen A nice but limited concept book, 6. November 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I am a great admirer of concept art and have a large selection of books on the topics, but was a bit dissapointed when I got the book. While it is printed and bound well, it does lack content-wise. The selection of artwork in the book is very very limited and covers actually just one concept vehicle (sketches, 3d models and renderings) with some variations (a futuristic bike to be precise).

While Harald Belker is a great artist, I would not say that the material on show justifies a book (which only has around 30 pages).

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best Maya 2014 reference for intermediate users, 6. November 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I rarely buy printed books on tools that iterate so fast, but the "Mastering Maya..." books are the only ones I buy regularily each year. I simply find it the best reference books to have on Maya. Please note, though, that the book is probably not ideal for you if you have no experience yet in Maya - this book assumes that the reader already knows basic workflows in Maya. The topics and assignments provided in this book are more advanced than, say, in a Beginner's Guide, but are described very precisely and are easy to follow. Also, Todd Palamar offers a lot of background, additional insights and other valuable information. It is noticeable that the author has years of practice with Maya and also production experience.

Most important topics are covered, although some not in all detail. If you want, for example, a primer on dynamics or character animation, you are better off with a specialist book (like the "Studio.." series).

For an intermediate to advanced Maya user, this book is a great way to keep up-to-speed with the latest features and learn a few new tricks now and then.

CryENGINE 3 Game Development: Beginner's Guide
CryENGINE 3 Game Development: Beginner's Guide
von Reindell Paul Tracy Sean
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 41,72

5.0 von 5 Sternen A valuable resource for CryEngine Devs, 6. November 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The Beginner's Guide is a great guide for artists or techies working with the CryEngine. While you can read it cover to cover, I found myself jumping around topics quite a bit. That is perfectly okay, as the chapters can be read independently of each other. The book conveys a lot of valuable insights and "best practices" (both authors work or worked at CryTek) even outside the Engine or Sandbox. For example, in the Chapter about game HUDs, you not only get the engine side of it, but they also show you how to create the actual HUD assets in Adobe Flash (a health and ammo bar in this case). Another example would be the integration with 3DS Max to bring digital content created in this tool into the engine (the book only covers 3DS Max but Maya works fine too and the workflow is very similar).

This book has become an invaluable asset for me when working with the CryEngine.

Note: I have also bought another book from Packt Publishing, the "CryENGINE 3 Cookbook", which offers a lot of info in the form of short (and easy to digest) recipes. While there is a bit of an overlap content wise, I would recommend getting both.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A good read for CryEngine Devs, 6. November 2013

Rezension bezieht sich auf: CryENGINE 3 Cookbook (Taschenbuch)
This is not a book that you read cover to cover, it is more set up as a series of "recipes" for specific tasks you might want to accomplish with CryEngine. The book really covers quite a wide array of topics and I find myself returning to it quite regularily when I work in CryEngine. It is noticeable that the authors worked with Crytek, as I had quite a few "good to know" moments when working through the book.

By the way, this book is a good addition to "CryENGINE 3 Game Development: Beginner's Guide" (I own both). Although there is a bit of overlap, I still find myself getting back to one or the other.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Valuable set of tips & tricks, 14. April 2013

Even though the book was written for Houdini 8 / 9, it still provides a great deal of tips and tricks that are of value. Some tips, especially in the interface section are not valid anymore for the latest versions (I am using 12.5) but the other sections provide great value and are perfectly adaptable to the latest version.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very nice imagery, hard to read at times., 10. Dezember 2012

The book over all is a very nice compilation of the aritsts' work.Think of it as a source of inspiration rather than a step-by-step guide on how to design characters. Some guides are in the book, true, but they're not detailed enough for an aspiring character designer. The art in the book is really good, though.

I work in CGI / VFX and expected a lot more from this book to be honest. It is a good compilation of topics that happen in the VFX industry but not really much more. Dont expect it to be a guide for the aspiring VFX artist.
