5.0 von 5 Sternen A great story, important questions, 14. Oktober 2015
Sometimes when I'm talking to friends and the subject turns to
totalitarian regimes past or present, how they function, why most
people go along with the system, why some people resist, we end up
wondering how we would fare if we were not so lucky as to have been
born into the societies we live in. Trigger does a very good job of
making sense of these things. It's also a great story.

This is great fantasy and also a gripping thriller, which is an interesting combination. Anyone who likes David Mitchell will love it. Anyone who has read "The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet" will enjoy seeing some interesting connections.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best book I've ever seen for learning how to "play the changes"., 27. September 2015
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This is an excellent book for anyone who would like to learn how to
improvise over standard jazz progressions. I wish it had been around
when I started out.

The focus of the book is on how to create melodic lines which outline
the harmonic progression you are improvising over. If you listen to
great jazz players soloing over standards, this is a very important
part of what they do. You can very often clearly hear the chord
progression in the melodic line itself. For example, when a player
like Sonny Rollins plays in a trio setting, he can make the chord
changes clear despite the fact that there is no piano comping in the
background. The bass and the tenor together are enough for the
listener to hear the changes. Even when great improvisers deliberately
play 'outside' the changes, playing dissonant phrases 'against' the
changes, or bluesy lines which are powerful in a melodic sense but
vague with respect to the changes, they will return to play
harmonically specific lines which do outline the changes. The tension
and relaxation which is created in the interplay between 'inside' and
'outside', or between harmonically specific and harmonically vague is
a crucial part of what makes the solos that these players improvise so
great.

Many people who come to jazz from other styles of music which use
simpler harmonic progressions find "playing the changes" to be the
primary initial stumbling block to improvising in this idiom. For
anyone in this position, this is the best book I can recommend. It
will also be very useful to musicians who already play jazz well,
either for their own playing or for use in teaching.

At the start of the book, Ligon introduces 3 basic patterns which are
highly frequent in jazz and also in other forms of music. These
patterns can be found literally and as the basis of countless
variations in many solos by great players. Ligon shows how these three
patterns can be used to outline a basic ii-V7-I progression in major
and minor and demonstrates various types of embellishing devices which
can be used with these patterns. He then goes on to show and comment
on 257 examples of the use of these patterns in solos by great
players, mostly over ii-V7-I progressions. After this, he demonstrates
how these patterns can be used to outline other common chord
progressions as well, beginning with a cycle of chords which can be
found literally in tunes such as Autumn Leaves or Fly Me to the Moon,
and in variation in countless other tunes. He then goes on to
investigate other common progressions such as turnarounds, rhythm
changes, blues, and a number of standards. The material is all very
useful. Anyone who masters the material in this book will be able to
apply this material to create interesting and varied solos just based
on these ideas alone. Ligon has also written several other excellent
books which examine other areas of jazz improvisation. I think that,
for those musicians who are trying to learn how to "play the changes",
this is an excellent place to start. Ligon's other books offer further
material for later exploration.

This is a great collection of short stories set during the last three
decades of the 20th century in Washington Heights, just north of the
Sugar Hill neighborhood of Harlem. They capture the feeling of that
place during that period, complex realities, sometimes tender, often
violent and dangerous, always fascinating. You'll never forget the
characters.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A fourth volume of great old blues footage, 4. Mai 2014

The American Folk Blues Festival was a series of tours of American
blues musicians in Europe starting in 1962. The recordings on this
volume were from 1963-1966. The tours were organized by Horst Lippmann
and Fritz Rau with the help of Willie Dixon, who played very important
roles in getting the American musicians on board and also, as one can
see in various videos, as a musical director, in addition to his bass
playing. Some of the recordings are staged for TV, some are from
concert settings. This volume has footage from the British parts of
the tours. The British tours are particularly important from a
historical perspective because of the way they shaped the British
Blues Explosion and British Rock. Back in the days when access to
blues in UK was difficult, all these great players suddenly came over,
and lots of British musicians who were later to become well known were
in the audience. Personal favorites of mine from this volume are the
pieces by Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters (including the bonus
tracks) and Lonnie Johnson.

following: Big Mama Thornton singing Hound Dog, which was later
covered by a certain former GI named Elvis; Skip James; Koko Taylor
and Little Walter on Wang Dang Doodle; A great bonus track by Earl
Hooker (anyone who plays blues on the electric guitar who has not yet
heard Earl Hooker should definitely listen to his music); two great
bonus tracks with Muddy Waters and band; and three tunes with Sonny
Terry & Brownie McGhee. The other stuff is great too, of course.

finally got to actually see Lonnie Johnson play. I gained greater
insight into how important Willie Dixon is. There is some great
footage of Earl Hooker, who deserves to be more widely known. The
first is some hilarious backstage footage in which he goofs around,
playing a country tune and immitating a redneck. Then, he goes onstage
and really cooks, playing some great blues, situated at the modern
edge of Chicago blues, with a 60s edge to it. And then there's Junior
Wells, and T-Bone Walker, Sonny Boy Williamson and Muddy Waters,

The Intuitionist: A Novel

5.0 von 5 Sternen Weird world of elevator inspectors, 4. Mai 2014
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Intuitionist: A Novel (Taschenbuch)
Colson Whitehead creates a strange and weird world in which
empiricists and intuitionists battle for control of the department of
elevator inspectors. Corruption, secrets and power struggles abound,
and the mob operates in the background. In this unreal world, one can
find everything from serious commentary on society to frivolous
humor. I didn't tear through the book, but I ultimately enjoyed it
very much. At times, the juxtaposition of utter seriousness and
frivolity didn't fit my mood, and I would put it down, and later pick
it up again. But that was my subjective reaction at the time of
reading. There is no doubt that this is highly original and creative
work. There will presumably be a strong correletion between the degree
to which a person enjoys reading weird stories set in an unreal world
and the degree to which a person will enjoy this book.
