4.0 von 5 Sternen It's Almost Like A Poem, 16. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Rain (Taschenbuch)
"Rain" by Kirsty Gunn is a beautifully written and very intriquing. You almost feel like you're reading a poem. The language and word choice is very special and I found myself very captured by main character Janey. The connection between older Janey (the narrator) and young Janey is very strong and powerful. It's a wonderful tale of a dangerous childhood and certainly grips it's reader into Janey's world. It's full of emotions and feelings that very few people can fully identify with. A brilliant first novel.

5.0 von 5 Sternen She Just Turns Out Masterpieces!, 15. Juli 2000
Edith Wharton is certainly one of the most accomplished authors in American history. I don't think there is ONE of her books that I don't completely LOVE. And, "Custom of the Country" is certainly one for the record books. Wharton creates a completely new and different novel in "Custom" than in her previous books. As in the others, you may have found yourself really cheering or rooting for the main characters. You felt affection and fondness for them. But, in this one could you have found more fault with Undine? She's everything a reader should just loath. But, for some strange and heartwarming reason, you don't care. You move past that and just enjoy this wonderfully written American Masterpiece. Wharton's gift for words, story and characterization is fabulous. I just love her. She's one of my top 3 favs.

4.0 von 5 Sternen You just can't stop yourself, 15. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Exposure (Taschenbuch)
You almost feel like you're driving down the road and are passing a car wreck. You know you shouldn't slow down and look, but you just can't resist. "Exposure" by Kathryn Harrison is just like that. You feel so guilty watching, but just can't tear yourself away. This alluring but, lurid book about a women's mental unraveling is brilliant and powerful. Ann Rogers grew up as the muse for her father's revealing photographs and when the museum plans on a show of his work, it opens up a whole world of issues she never knew would happen. It causes a tremendous amount of anguish and provocative reactions. This psychological thriller is simply fascinating and very worth of your time.
It's not an easy read. And, it contains very mature subject matter, but very powerful.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Almost Too Much For Me, 15. Juli 2000
I found myself really struggling with "Candy" by Luck Davies. This harsh and really difficult look into the world of Heroin (aka Candy) was really difficult for me. I found it confusing and it jumped around a lot. I might just not have the sensibilities for this one, I'm not sure. Just not really my cup of tea. I can see the merits for some (the extra stars) but, I enjoyed "Transpotting" much more.

Girl, Interrupted
Girl, Interrupted

4.0 von 5 Sternen Deeply Powerful and Honest, 15. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Girl, Interrupted (Taschenbuch)
Author Susanna Kaysen lets the world into her mind in "Girl, Interrupted." For someone who was suppose to be "nuts" and in a mental hospital this tale of her time there is very clear and brilliant. She's wonderfully poetic and compelling. I found this book frank, honest and deeply funny in some areas. She pulled no punches and truly drove into her own mind and those who she shared her time with at the hospital. It's a tough and powerful novel that is told so honestly that you want to be so careful with it and be respectful. Kaysen is a talented storyteller and very honest. I really enjoyed this book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Terrific Read, 30. Juni 2000
I found "The Fundamentals of Play" to be a wonderfully exciting book. I had heard tremendous praise and good word about this new novel and had great hopes in reading it. I was very pleased with all aspects of it. I found the characters relatable and interesting, the plot thoughtful and easy to follow, but still interesting and fun to read. The friendships and life experience of the cast of characters keeps this book moving and never dull. I see great promise in Caitlin Macy's work and look forward to more from her in the future.

2.0 von 5 Sternen It Just Went On and On....., 30. Juni 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Princess Charming (Taschenbuch)
I was hoping for a fun and charming "mystery-romance" book for the beach. But, this was not it. It just went on and on....and, I didn't think it would ever end. So, I skipped to the back, found out who it was and just ended it. It's way too long, and just not exciting enough. I couldn't care less who the culprit was or who was going to get killed....that's a bad sign in a mystery book. Not worth it.

When I first picked this book up, I thought it was going to be the standard story I've read before. Woman is upset with life and family, sets off on adventure of self-discovery, and ends up deciding it's not so bad after all. Well...that's the farest thing from the truth. This is a TRUE delight. I was charmed. I found Lucy to be very endearing and I enjoyed her character tremendously. It's a wonderfully funny book about a family, YES. But, it's also so much more. I think that it's an all-around book for anyone looking for a great treat on those long summer days. It's not too taxing and loads of fun.

"The House of the Spirits" is a passionate, full and wonderfully written book that spans generations. I was so entralled with this book that I just couldn't stop reading it until I was all done. I found myself transported to a far away time and place with such ease. Author, Isabel Allende is wonderfully talented and has such a tremendous gift with words, storytelling, characterization, and movement. This book never dragged and, I was never tempted to skip ahead. I wanted to savior every word. I really loved it!

4.0 von 5 Sternen So Much Fun!, 30. Juni 2000
I just loved this book. I thought it was fun, smart and very clever. I think it pretty much covers any topic that a young women in her 20's has a question about. A lot of the advice is sound, but still with a punch of humor and charm. I think it's a must read for any gal trying to muddle on with being a women in the beginning of her life. It's packed with style and fun....it's a light, wonderfully creative, and sometimes "laugh out loud" fun. It's a fun pick up for the summer.
