Home Improvement 1-2-3: Expert Advice from the Home Depot
Home Improvement 1-2-3: Expert Advice from the Home Depot
von Benjamin W. Allen
  Gebundene Ausgabe

4.0 von 5 Sternen A nice all-in-one package, 24. Juni 2000
I've turned to this book over and over to fix various little problems around the house. The pictures are good and clear. My only complaint is that a few times there have been key little details that have been glossed over.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A big disappointment, 23. Juni 2000
Don't get me wrong: This is a fine book. It's well-written. It's organized beautifully. The problem is it's just too thin for the price.
Roughly one third of the book is given to database theory entirely separate from the DBI. I think it's fair to assume that anyone who's looking into Perl & the DBI is going to be conversant with databases and persistence.

Python Essential Reference (New Riders Professional Library)
Python Essential Reference (New Riders Professional Library)
von David M. Beazley
  Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen What a quick reference should be, 22. Juni 2000
It's concise, it's well-organized, it's small, and it just plain looks good.
Combined with "The Quick Python Book", you've got all you need in the way of Python documentation, and nary an O'Reilly title in sight.

Cascading Style Sheets, Engl. ed.: Designing for the Web
Cascading Style Sheets, Engl. ed.: Designing for the Web
von Hakon W. Lie
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen A fine book that uses a key feature missing nowadays, 21. Juni 2000
Although I didn't like this book quite as much as the O'Reilly offering (I rarely do), I'm pleased that there's a quickref on the inside covers. If only all computer books would use these easily-accessible areas!

Learning Python
Learning Python
von Mark Lutz
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good introduction to Python, but don't buy it, 15. Juni 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Learning Python (Taschenbuch)
Lutz's book is a pretty good coverage of the material, and is worthy of the O'Reilly name. However, you're even better off buying Harms & McDonald's "The Quick Python Book", published by Manning. It's less dry, more interesting, and just a better book.

Elements of Programming with Perl
Elements of Programming with Perl
von Andrew L. Johnson
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 27,18

3.0 von 5 Sternen Too much spread out too thin, 5. April 2000
This book doesn't feel like a Perl book. It feels like Johnson is a C programmer at heart, trying to write a book about Perl.
Worse, it's such a wide survey of Perl as to be incongruous. He's got pages devoted to the thought process behind how to structure a program, which is fine for an introductory text; but then he gets into anonymous hashes and different sorting algorithms. Is this an introductory book or not?
The chart on page 184 of all the regex elements is completely useless. It shows all the elements, but doesn't explain at all what they do.
It sure LOOKS great. I love the visual internal style of all the Manning books.
I haven't seen anything that's incorrect, and he writes clearly enough. It's just poorly organized and feels like it was thrown together.

MySQL & mSQL (Classique Us)
MySQL & mSQL (Classique Us)
von Randy J Yarger
  Taschenbuch

3.0 von 5 Sternen Useful, but not the best choice, 12. Januar 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: MySQL & mSQL (Classique Us) (Taschenbuch)
If this were the only book on MySQL that existed, I'd be pleased, but with the release of MySQL by Paul DuBois, this book has been obsoleted.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Does anyone actually put these things in their pockets?, 9. Dezember 1999

I guess if your have to carry documentation around with you all day, this is the book to have. Otherwise, get Perl In A Nutshell.

CGI.pm w/OL
CGI.pm w/OL
von Lincoln Stein
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 43,90

3.0 von 5 Sternen Great for learning; dismal for reference; rotten visually, 29. November 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: CGI.pm w/OL (Taschenbuch)
The first half of the book is a great tutorial on using the CGI.pm module. There are all sorts of tricks, and Lincoln's explanations are very good. If you want a tutorial, this is it.
However, the reference section is a mess. It's not clear how the various functions are grouped, and there are no guides in page headings to tell you where you are as you thumb through. If you're looking for a desktop reference, you're probably better off using the CGI section of "Perl In A Nutshell".
Finally, the book looks like it was thrown together in Word, with no real thought about how it would look. Chapter titles are in grey: Why?

Object Oriented Perl: A Comprehensive Guide to Concepts and Programming Techniques
Object Oriented Perl: A Comprehensive Guide to Concepts and Programming Techniques
von Damian Conway
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 33,76

5.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent advanced book, 24. November 1999
I can only echo the positive comments from those who've already commented. OOPerl is clearly written, beautifully designed, and funny as hell.
