3.0 von 5 Sternen A regular sequel, 31. Juli 2000
Jack Higgins reached his top with "The Eagle Has Landed". Said that, we can clearly state that this was a very inferior book. Being a Higgins fan, I wanted to know what happened to the "heroes" of the first book and I was a bit disappointed. EHF reapeats some situations found in EHL and the action is not so fast-paced as the previous one. I only recommend EHF if: 1) you have already read EHL; and 2) you are a Higgins fan.

A Gathering of Spies

5.0 von 5 Sternen Entertaining as hell!, 29. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: A Gathering of Spies (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I wasn't very entusiastic about this book when I bought it, but since it was a World War II spy-thriller I thought I should give it a try. And I enjoyed every minute I was reading it. Great characters, especially Winterbotham and Katarina. If you are looking for a great weekend/holiday read, then you won't be disappointed with this one. I will certainly wait for John Altman's next novel.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting tips, 25. Juli 2000
When I read the title of this book I couldn't believe it - fifteen minutes a day! I then bought it and found it very interesting and amusing. I must say however that the book hinges sometimes on simple good sense or says something that the student perceives the minute he gets into grad school. This book is very recommended if you don't have a clue on what you'll do next and you really need some advice. It is also great if you haven't had any contact with the "academic culture" before you entered graduate school.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A good overview, 11. Juli 2000
This book is always recommended in Brazil for undergraduates and it gives an overview of Latin America's main countries. It is a great factual book, so don't expect deep analysis of history. It is highly reccomended for anyone that doesn't know a thing about the region and it is very simple and clear.

Weber: Political Writings (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought)
von Max Weber

Preis: EUR 25,61

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Master is back, 2. Juli 2000
How can anyone rate any book by Max Weber with less than 5 stars? This Cambridge edition of some texts he wrote about politics is extremely well done. The edition includes some of his great texts about the subject as "The Vocation of Politics", "Socialism" (where he comments that socialism would crumble when faced with burocracy) and the masterpiece "Parliement and Government in Germany". This book belongs in the library of anyone who wants to seriously understand politics in our time.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Practical as can be, 2. Juli 2000
I am an International Relations graduate student and this book helped me a lot. It is a very concise and practical guide to students of social sciences in general. In it you will find how to define your variables, clear your arguments and write any kind of paper. The book became my inseparable companion. Mr. Van Evera also includes a curious chapter on professional ethics both for students and for teachers. If you are looking for something less technical and more practical, this is the book for you.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Funny and interesting, 27. Mai 2000
This book was recommended for me by some friends that enjoyed it very much. So, I accepted the suggestion and bought it. And I don't regret it for a minute.
The book tells us about the encounter of two great figures (Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli) that are trying to put togheter a plan to change the course of the Arno River, near Florence and Piza. The story, however is merely a pretext to present us these two great characters and to make us wonder how two completely different people could have meant so much to western history.
The writing never bores us and even if you don't know much about this period or Leonardo and Machiavelli, you will have a great time reading this book. This is what I call intelligent fun.

Insurgent Mexico

5.0 von 5 Sternen Revolución or muerte, 27. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Insurgent Mexico (Taschenbuch)
This short book is one of the wonders of journalism of all times. John Reed takes us into a journey of Revolutionary Mexico and we end up enjoying every minute of it. The description of the "hombres" is touching and Pancho Villa is great. Very recommended! But when you buy it, be sure you will have time to read it, because you won't be able to put it down.

A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II
A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II

5.0 von 5 Sternen Buy two, 17. Dezember 1999
This is certainly one of the best one volume history of WWII. If you already know a lot about WWII or you just want to know what happened, this book is for you. I recommend you spend a little more and buy the hardcover edition - it is one hell of a reference book and you'll be coming back to it very often. And don't be intimidated by its size. I also recommend John Keegan's "The Second World War".

Five Days in London, May 1940
Five Days in London, May 1940
von John Lukacs
  Gebundene Ausgabe

5.0 von 5 Sternen History as it should always be done, 16. Dezember 1999
It was no surprise to all those that follows Lukacs work that this book is excellent. He tries to show that during five days in May, 1940, Britain was at the brink of surrender and the war would definitely lost. Lukacs writes so well that you're able to read this book as you read a good fiction novel. I strongly recommend it - as serious study or just history fun.
