5.0 von 5 Sternen Darkness series, book one, 6. Februar 2009
Since a young age Amy Shane has been able to see colors around people and eventually figured out what each color and glow means. At the age of five, she lost her last parent to suicide. It is no wonder that Amy grew up a loner. Now around the age of twenty, Amy still tends to avoid people, except for "Uncle" Cyrus Diamond. Amy works freelance, retrieving data from computers and software. (With a great ninety-five percent success rate!) But even talking to clients on the phone is becoming a problem because the colors and glows are actually starting to come through the phone lines lately. Then a stranger breaks into her bedroom late one night. With only a few sentences he changes her life forever. Amy hardly has time to be afraid before more men break in, claiming to be FBI, and drag the first away. Since Cyrus worked for the government, Amy turns to him. Cyrus confirms the man was a serial killer and she is lucky the FBI reached her in time. Yet for the first time in Amy's life, she does not believe Cyrus is telling the truth. Amy soon learns that the stranger's name is Lucas Vanderwyck and that he has been the man entering her dreams and keeping to the shadows. Amy and Lucas share some sort of psychic connection.

As Amy digs deeper, Cyrus becomes worried. At this rate, Amy would quickly learn the truth about who and what she is. Should that happen, Cyrus will no longer be able to protect her.

***** This is the first in an outstanding new paranormal romance series. This is not a new author with little or no experience. (Jaime Rush is the more widely known as Tina Wainscott.) With this new name, Jaime gives readers more of the suspense they crave. From the very beginning my attention was caught and I will not even pretend that I wanted to get free. I read the entire story in one afternoon, rarely coming up for air. The more I read, the deeper the conspiracy went. Paranormal Romance gets no better than this and I cannot recommend this title highly enough. *****

Set on the planet of Caliban. No one knew where Lion El'Jonson came from. He was found, naked and alone, in the most deadly region. Within a year he had not only learned the people's language, but had become super intelligent. Caliban was a world in which humanity resided far from the top of the food chain. The Lion had risen quickly in the ranks of the Order. It was the Lion that swayed the masses into killing all the mighty beasts of Caliban. Section-by-section those beasts were to be forced into extinction. It would take over ten years to complete.

Zahariel and Nemiel were cousins. They were admitted into the Order, long before the age of ten, while still children. The two cousins had healthy competitions between each other that helped them strive to better themselves. Yet as they grew up they could not help but begin to feel a bit of strife when the other won. Zahariel was an idealist and caught the eyes of those in the higher ranks more often than Nemiel did. Once all the great beasts were taken care of, as well as a brief war between orders, Caliban would change forever. All knew this; however, none even dreamed that the biggest change would come from the stars in the form of the Imperium.

*** This story begins as if a grandparent were telling a story to his grandchild. The prelude is several pages long and the narration seems to wonder a bit too often. Three quarters of the book is on Caliban, before the Astartes even show up. The focus is mainly on the boy named Zahariel. I witnessed much of this story from his point-of-view. I saw his events from as young as age seven. The character of Primarch Lion El'Jonson is seen through Zahariel as well, so I found myself subjected to the boy's overwhelming awe too often and it eventually became irritating to me.

The Imperium enters late in the story. Soon gaps of time began to pop up. It made the Dark Angels (Lion's Legion) section feel rushed and the ending felt anticlimactic to me. All-in-all, this story is a good read, but nothing special. ***

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very well done!, 27. Januar 2009
Set in 1815. Jane had been a soiled dove lucky enough to marry wealthy Esmond Tremoille. Upon Esmond's death, Jane made sure she would get everything by doing away with the lawyer and torching his office. But rumor has it that Esmond had drawn up another will, revoking the one Jane has and leaving all to his daughter, Elizabeth "Beth". Jane had tossed Beth out last year and waits for her year of bereavement to be done so she can wed Lord (Thomas) Welland.

Sir Guy Valmer of Greylake is determined to claim Tremoille House, which had once belonged to his family. He needs only to find the second will and then marry Beth, by force if need be. Locating Beth is the harder of the two, because she knows Sir Guy is hunting her.

Beth had come across the dead body of the man taking Jane's money to the bank. Though Beth did not kill the man, she did steal the money. She leaves half the money for Jake Mannacott, the blacksmith she had been with since Jane kicked her out. With the other half, Jane goes to London. When Sir Guy finds her in London, Beth flees to the coast of Exmoor and leases the Dower House. It is there Beth meets wealthy landowner Landry Haldane. Once Beth feels safe, she allows herself to be with Landry even though she secretly longs for Sir Guy. Unknown to Beth though, Sir Guy has finally found her again.

***** Author Sarah Stanley keeps the story realistic to its time setting. I never found a flaw, though I admit that there are a bit too many coincidences. The secondary characters are almost as well developed as the main characters. Each personality has several layers, much like a real person. The story so well written that I found myself hating the wicked stepmother, and loving every moment of it, only to later actually start feeling a bit sorry for her. (Just a bit though.) This title is can work as a stand-alone story, however, if you do not know that there is to be a sequel released (Midwinter Marriage, May 29, 2009) you will not feel totally satisfied. It ends in a good spot, but leaves a few strings dangling. Be warned that this book is hotter than your average historical romance. All-in-all, Sarah Stanley has proven herself to be a terrific writer and I eagerly look forward to another story by this amazing author. *****

von Graham McNeill
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 5,37

4.0 von 5 Sternen Horus Heresy, Book Five, 24. Januar 2009
Like book four, book five begins before Horus's terrible massacre with viral weaponry on Isstvan III.

Primarch Fulgrim loves art, be they sculptures, paintings, music, or otherwise. Among his expedition resides the best each medium has to offer. Things are slowly changing. The pace of change quickens after Fulgrim takes a silver blade from his crushed enemies. With the touch of the hilt, Fulgrim begins to hear a voice, calling itself the Spirit of Perfection, within his head.

The Apothecary Fabius sways Fulgrim into allowing him permission to conduct experiments toward perfection. Fabius seeks to enhance the gene-seed of the Astartes. Many Astartes, such as Lord Commander Eidolon, Captain Marius Vairosean, and Captain Lucius, submit themselves to receive augmentative surgery. (This cannot be good.)

Once Fulgrim joins the Warmaster's treasonous plans, Fulgrim tries to coax Primarch Ferrus Manus to their cause. When Fulgrim fails battle lines are drawn. Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus stand on opposing sides. Only one can be allowed to live.

**** Author Graham McNeill simply skims over the battle on Isstvan III. After all, it has been told twice already from two different point-of-views. The previous stories focused on battles on planets or ship corridors. First these were against the Emperor's enemies. However, this one focuses on the corruption of art and the secret desires of Battle Brothers. No fights between reanimated Astartes this time. No, the dark forces of Chaos bring the blood and gore to the opera house this time. This, for me, is the best part of the book. McNeill brings the nightmare to vivid life before continuing the blood bath elsewhere. The book starts out slowly, but the pace picks up quickly. By the ending readers will find themselves holding their breaths and sitting on the edge of their seats. A great addition to the saga! ****

5.0 von 5 Sternen Horus Heresy, Book Four, 21. Januar 2009
Book four begins shortly before Horus's terrible massacre via Life-Eater capsules on Isstvan III.

Battle-Captain Nathaniel Garro of the Death Guard is honored when informed he is to accompany Primarch Mortarion to the Isstvan System. Four Legions obey the Warmaster' command to assemble there. But all he knows begins to crumble around Garro as he witnesses Horus's betrayal. Those crumbs turn to dust after receiving Captain Saul Tarvitz's warning and allowing Captain Iacton Qruze to dock with his three charges.

While aboard the ship named "Eisenstein", Garro learns that Commander Ignatius Grulger is preparing to launch Life-Eater capsules on the Warmaster's orders. Garro deals with the problem only to realize that he needs to flee (something previously unheard of in the Death Guard) in order to warn the Emperor of Horus's treachery. To do so, the ship must enter the warp unprepared and its crew must survive the horrors it throws at them.

***** Much of this story will make no sense to anyone that has not read the previous titles. I strongly suggest that this saga be read in order. This book begins shortly before Garviel Loken and the others drop onto Isstvan III. I, as the reader, relive those events from Garro's point-of-view rather than Loken's. The author did an excellent job describing the chaos, confusion, and horrors. He even brings some new characters into the saga's mix. A cadre from the Divisio Astra Telepathica, led by the Oblivion Knight Sister Amendera Kendel, enter the story. James Swallow clearly shows why the Silent Sisterhood is to be feared by the Emperor's enemies. I am eager to learn more of that Chapter. Encore! *****

5.0 von 5 Sternen Horus Heresy, Book Three, 21. Januar 2009
Begins one year after the end of book two, "False Gods".

Remembrancer Euphrati Keeler lay unmoving and unresponsive in a medicae bay since she and Sindermann faced the horrible creature from the warp in Archive Chamber Three. The apothecaries and medics could find nothing physically wrong with her, save for the eagle shaped burn on her hand that refused to fade. The power she used to defeat the chaos spawn was nothing less than a miracle. Euphrati is now called a saint. A new church is being founded in the name of the Emperor. However, there are those who desire the death of the saint.

When the Warmaster commands Captain Garviel Loken of the Sons of Horus Legion and selected others to be in the speartip drop down to Isstvan III (to take Choral City), Loken asks Captain Iacton Qruze to look after the remembrancers Mersadie Oliton, Euphrati Keeler, and Kyril Sindermann. While Qruze helps keep his three charges alive, Loken and all the others on the surface of Isstvan III find themselves totally betrayed.

Can you hear it? It is the music of the spheres.

***** Author Ben Counter takes off where "False Gods" left. The attitudes of the characters in this installment mirror those from the previous story perfectly. From there, Counter takes readers' imaginations to a whole new level. The battle scenes were so real to me that I could almost feel the planet tremble beneath my feet and hear the bolter blasts. It gets no better than this! *****

4.0 von 5 Sternen Horus Heresy, Book Two, 20. Januar 2009
Iterators and remembrancers have not yet become an official part of the Crusade fleets. The civilians and scholars still follow the expeditionary forces, moving among them and writing of the glorious truths of the Imperium. Even Warmaster Horus decides to choose a personal documentarist, Petronella Vivar.

Horus is tricked into leading his men to Davin's moon where he is critically injured. Petronella witnesses as Horus falls unconscious from his wounds. While Horus is still unaware, he is transferred to a place of sorcery and the void. It is there Horus is swayed in his thinking to Chaos.

Garviel Loken, the Company Commander of the Sons of Horus Legion, and Tarik Torgaddon watch in horror as events play out before them. When Horus falls from his wounds, the Astartes begin to fall apart in confusion. Loken and Torgaddon are no exceptions to this. The death of the universe may just have begun.

**** In book two, author Graham McNeill continues the series of the Horus Heresy. As talented as I believe this author to be, I cannot help but notice the huge changes in the mood swings and attitude of Horus. The character is no longer as careful and seldom checks for facts any more. No longer does The Mournival whisper words of wisdom and advice in the Warmaster's ear. To me, it did not even seem to be a gradual change. The character is simply not believable to be the same Horus from the first book's foundation. I found the men of the Astarte to be just as unbelievable in their undisciplined behavior while Horus is in the void. Thankfully, that did not continue as long as I thought it might. Everything else is done well. The ending is a bit rushed to me, but still well done. Small threads (such as mentioning "the saint") are planted for book three to pick up and carry onward, just as the first book left small threads for book two's continuation. I look forward to more! ****

5.0 von 5 Sternen Falcon's Bend, Book Three, 16. Januar 2009
On November 23, 1989, Serena Salim sat in the car as her husband, Nelson, robbed a bank. Her young son, Roman, sat beside her. In the bank with Nelson was his partner-in-crime, Zeke Carfi. When Zeke realized Nelson was about to shoot the bank manager, Zeke stopped him. Unintentionally, Nelson ended up dead. As Serena and Roman witnessed Zeke being arrested and Nelson being carried out in a body bag, they vowed revenge against Zeke for the death. Zeke began his thirty year prison sentence.

Fifteen years later (2004), Zeke is paroled. His twenty-four-year-old daughter, Amber, is a patrol officer in Falcon's Bend. Amber gets a room ready for her father so he can live with her and she can keep an eye on him. Amber's partner of two years is Warren Jensen. He has been a good friend of Amber's for over five years. Amber and Warren often do things together off duty. The two friends are attracted to each other, but keep their emotional distances. Yet when someone begins following Amber, breaking into her residence more than once, and even tries to kidnap her, Warren takes it as personally as Amber. As things heat up, so does the relationship between the two partners.

***** An excellent story with a lot of mystery, drama, and excitement. It is obvious to me that the authors, Wiesner and Spindler, compliment each other's writing styles. Every single character is well developed and the emotions seem real. Totally fascinating! *****

3.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting twist to the paranormal romance genre., 6. Januar 2009
A curse was cast by one of the most powerful of the original fallen angels, Maeve, the goddess of lust. The chaos caused was horrible. Then someone interfered with Maeve's curse and trapped her in the Tunnels of the Forgotten Ones. It has been almost a millennium, but now Maeve is free at last. She is weak, but her strength grows quickly. First Maeve will find out who interfered. Her vengeance will be swift and merciless. Then she will search for her powerful emerald.

Elizabeth "Beth" Raines has a life in Seattle as a designer and beta-tester of software applications. But for now she must return to Spokane and place the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her mother is dying in the hospital. Her brother is in prison. Her sister was in drug rehab, but has disappeared. Beth must not only care for her dying mother, but care for ten nieces and nephews. The house is run down, there is little money, and the kids delight in making things worse. There is seldom even escape in sleep. A monster stalks the corridors of her dream realm. Sometimes she can slip into a room of paradise with Alex, a man she care for but cannot have without harming him.

Alex Foster knows Beth has a secret. For the past twelve years she has pulled him into her dreams and ruined him for any other woman. But Alex has secrets too. He is a healer. He can heal inflicted wounds. But not if they be natural, such as cancer.) Alex knows that danger hunts Beth and the ten special children she is caring for. And only Alex and Beth's combined supernatural gifts can save them all from horrible deaths.

*** Though the plot is sound and characters are interesting, the narration needed by a pair fallen seraphim takes away some of the intensity of the story. However, I can understand why the author wrote this tale in such a way. Readers can learn much from the fallen pair that would be difficult, if not impossible, to learn from the main characters. If you have not read the first book, Betrayed do not fret. You will totally understand what is going on and why. All-in-all, an interesting twist in the paranormal romance genre. ***

5.0 von 5 Sternen The emotions hit me harder than brandy would have., 6. Januar 2009
Lady Julianne Bradley's parents could easily be called cold-hearted and uncaring. In fact, those are the nicer terms one could use to describe Lord and Lady Gatesbourne. Being the daughter of titled parents, Julianne always knew her marriage would be arranged by her father to the one with the highest title and wealth. Now that time has arrived. Instead of going through the motions of posting the bans and a long engagement to prepare for a lavish Society wedding (and help her to mentally prepare for a long, loveless life) Julianne learns that she is due to wed the Duke of Eastling within two weeks and immediately be stashed away in Cornwall. Though resigned to her fate, Julianne longs for love and passion. She wants what two of her friends were lucky enough to find in their marriages. When thinking of her imaginary love, Julianne always conjures up the image of Bow Street Runner Gideon Mayne. She met Gideon two months ago when he was investigating a series of murders plaguing Mayfair. His image is what Julianne sees whenever she devours the latest novel her bookclub is reading. You see, the Ladies Literary Society of London did not read boring, but acceptable, books. Instead, the books they chose to read are very sexually explicit.

The topic on everybody's tongues these days is about a murdering ghost robber. All the victims are wealthy ladies, found dead with their valuables missing. And it seems Julianne is next on the killer's list. Gideon is hired by Lord Gatesbourne to guard Julianne until she is safely wed and Eastling's responsibility. Gideon accepts, though he finds himself strongly attracted to Lady Julianne. While Gideon protects her from a murderer, who will protect him from Julianne?

***** A story by Jacquie D'Alessandro is to be slowly savored like fine wine. This author excels in making readers feel the same emotions her characters do. These emotions are so strong at times that they may punch you harder than brandy. And this latest installment of the Mayhem in Mayfair series is no exception. From beginning to end, this tale over flows with romance, passion, humor, and danger. I came to care deeply for the main couple (even the huge guard dog and the tiny ankle biter). I dreaded seeing the number of pages left to read dwindling and found myself reading slower and slower. Now if only I can make it until this author's next release. Astounding! *****
