5.0 von 5 Sternen Professional Apache, 11. April 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Pro Apache (Professional) (Taschenbuch)
This is an excellent book that covers just about everything you'll need to know to get the most out of Apache. It's much more accomplished and up to date than the O'Reilly book.
Everything from advanced Apache build options to implementing virtual hosts, cgi and dynamic content (including php3) to performance and monitoring are covered in a detailed yet easy to digest way. There's a good chapter on security which covers authentication as well as server security in good depth.
The author makes little attempt to cover Apache running under Windows, though this is explained in the first chapter. However, if you can get Apache up and running on a Windows machine without help, the book will still be of enormous use.
My only criticism is that Wrox insist on putting moody pictures of their authors on the front cover of their books. Why couldn't he at least smile?

5.0 von 5 Sternen Outstanding, 12. März 2000
This was my first O'Reilly book, and one I've used ever since as a yardstick of what they're capable of producing.
Faced with the daunting task of writing a compiler, I discovered this book and was amazed at the wealth and depth of information it contains.
It could possibly do with a little extra theoretical background, but if you are looking at any sort of task involving lex and yacc or their derivatives, buy this excellent book.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing, 12. März 2000
The most serious problem with this book is that there's no index. If you want to remind yourself of what arguments a particular function needs, you have to work out which category the function falls in and hunt through the appropriate chapter.
It's useful as a reference if you can't get at the online PHP manual, but I've found that I rarely use it now. Maybe it's simply that the annotated online manual is so good, the book is redundant.
Having said that, some of the example code provided is extremely useful, though the code layout suffers from the small size of the pages.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Another great O'Reilly book, 12. März 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: MySQL & mSQL (Classique Us) (Taschenbuch)
This is an excellent book for MySQL/mSQL novices. It takes the reader through database fundamentals through to installing and managing a working MySQL or mSQL database. SQL is described well enough that a complete newcomer to the language could pick it up easily.
On the downside, database programming coverage isn't brilliant (the PHP coverage is particularly poor), and there's practically no mention of ODBC which I was disappointed to find.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Useful for Apache beginners, 12. März 2000
As O'Reilly books go, Apache: The Definitive Guide is really rather weak. There's enough information to get an Apache installation up and running, but there's nowhere near enough depth for it to be called a 'definitive' guide. It's also a little out of date.
A far better book is Wrox's 'Professional Apache' which covers everything the O'Reilly book does and much more.
