5.0 von 5 Sternen classics, 10. November 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Always a good read, and plenty to think about. Interesting to see how relevant Wells still is today. A visionary writer, and this story is full of disturbing thoughts and reflections on the way Science and humans meet. Insight into both, but as usual it is the insight into people that is most disturbing.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Ahhh... something has awoken, 10. November 2014

More dynamic writing, and I am getting into the characaters a llittle more. Will certainly continue with the series, though a couple of reads in between will be necessary.

3.0 von 5 Sternen getting there, but Vol. 2 a little slow, 10. November 2014

Not bad, as the description suggests, but there were some sections that seemed a little long. Book 3 was better...

Every time one comes back to this, it is a wonderful experience. Just the opening pages are enough to get me totally engaged once more.

Luke and Jon

I had no idea what to expect, but once I got reading, it was impossible to stop. A clear and sensitive account of boys and parents, of difficult times at home and at school, of art and suffering… There is so much humanity condensed into these few pages.

The style is clear and accessible, and the descriptions are inventive, without becoming contrived or pompous. There is no sense of becoming slushy and oversentimental at any point.

A perfectly readable and original account of the way the boys, Luke and Jon, become acquainted and deal with their own life stories, sometimes together, sometimes alone.

Highly recommended reading, for teens, and for adults.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Impressive scale, and visionary, 26. Oktober 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I was struck by the scale of this novel, and from the outset I am looking forward to the second part. It is a grim world indeed that Mr. Asher has depicted, but I just wonder how close he is to reality in certain places. It took me a while to get into the central character, a sort of cyborg, but in the end one does become a bit more familiar with him, and the entire world that is depicted by Mr. Asher.

The writing is dynamic, the action never ending, there was some gore (which is not really my thing), but overall there was a techy feeling mixed with dystopia that worked very well.

I can see this making a great screenplay as well.

Another one of Patrick Robinson’s techno-thrillers. One or two scenes seemed a little belaboured, and he brings in some background information about horses, for instance, that just seems irrelevant. Having said this, there is a lot of technical expertise, which he exploits excellently in my opinion. And the tension is certainly kept at a very high level for most of the novel.

A good four stars for this category. Easy-read, thriller.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Supreme story-telling, 20. August 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The very best instalment so far, and I literally could not put the book down. A very different focus, with some original intrigue, resolved after only many twists; the final turn reserved for the last few pages of the story. Cleverly interwoven, characters used coherently.

For me, the story-telling is supreme, the characters painted richly and the variety of scenes, one following in the wake of the other, all tie in neatly to create my favourite story yet in the Gorean saga. The fighting scene that pours into the flying competition was a triumph of action. The backdrop of the board-game is fabulous and carefully deployed.

At a time when I really thought of not going any further with the books, mainly because of the “slave women” philosophy, I have revised my thoughts (though the philosophy presented is not really one to be taken at face value)... This was a total page-turner!

There was also more optimism in this story, which made a huge difference.

3.0 von 5 Sternen poor women and greedy men, 14. August 2014

Nomads of Gor

Installment number four: the concept of slavery and women being enslaved is almost taken to an extreme that I could hardly believe.

There were a couple of redeeming moments, such as the battle scene towards the end, and such as one or two of the characters that are introduced…

One gets the impression sometimes of reading a guidebook to Gor. Certain passages are lengthy and descriptive of some technical aspect of the world.

Always difficult to know whether one should carry on reading the cycle… There are more things that could be read that are perhaps more nourishing or uplifting to the soul; and the constant presentation of the mistreatment of women becomes depressing at times. The suggestion in book five that the slave girl actually does not mind her condition and even enjoys exploiting it to unravel some deeper plot going on is a limited justification.

The writing remains of a high quality and imaginative elements are particularly strong and inspired.

My Brother Michael

Always interesting to go back to this novel after having reading it several years ago already. I reread this book whilst I was in Delphi itself, and it captures the atmosphere of the location perfectly (at least for what it must have been in the sixties, though things have changed rather a lot now: it is no longer possible to walk around the site freely.)

Interesting characters, and a plot that grips you right from the beginning. The story plunges you into the atmosphere of the classical world, but has a very strong thriller dimension. A pleasant, quick, intelligent read. One can easily get sentimental about Greece from 50 years ago reading this story.
