5.0 von 5 Sternen A must read for graduate students in economics, 31. Dezember 1999
Alpha Chiang's text should serve as the foundation for all quantitive analysis done in economic theory. It is an invaluable teaching tool for graduate students in economics and will help them better understand the mathematical techniques that have become so necessary for economic modeling.(p)
I am not a highly quantitative person myself, but I found Chiang's book comprehensible and a useful reference guide in my gradaute economics classes. Along with Hal Varian's "Microeconomic Theory" and Jan Kmenta's "Econometrics", I would say that Chiang's "Fundamentals of Mathematical Economics" should serve as sacred literature for any prospective graduate student in economics.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An important and useful text for understanding trade theory., 31. Dezember 1999
Krugman and Obstfeld provide a full detailed analysis and examples for the basis of trade among nations. It is relatively straightforward to comprehend for both economists and noneconomists. International trade is an important component of economic policy for the growth and development of countries. This book examines various theoretical trade models and provides real world examples of policy formulation and their impact. The authors do not take any political positions, thus making their analysis a purely objective, or positive study.(p)
I would highly recommend this book to students interested in doing research in international trade and development. It is a must read for prospective international economists. Noneconomists might also find it as a useful reference.

Profiles in Courage
Profiles in Courage
von John F. Kennedy
  Gebundene Ausgabe

5.0 von 5 Sternen A book reflecting the importance of our Constitution., 17. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Profiles in Courage (Gebundene Ausgabe)
John F. Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize winning book is a must read for all Americans interested in the importance of statesmanship and the courage to place principles above personal profit. Each chapter details the works of a U.S. legislator who made a significant impact on the credibility of the United States Constitution, often putting his or her career on the line to defend the foundations of the American republic. Many of these legislators are rarely spoken of today, but the continuing tradition of the democratic process of this nation owes a deep sense of gratitude to these statesmen.(p)
At a time when many of us are questioning the character and the ambitions of our political leaders, this book is a worthy reminder to us that a few good people can make the difference. This book is timely and pertinent when cyncism abounds in the minds of many voters and taxpayers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent introduction to econometric analysis!, 17. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Elements of Econometrics (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Jan Kmenta's "Elements of Econometrics" is a must read for all students of economics. It is a valuable reference guide which serves as an introduction to statistical regression methods that are used in economic modeling. It should be quite comprehensible to those who have had introductory courses in economics principles and statistics.(p)
I used this text quite extensively in my graduate research when I was attempting to build a quantitative model. I highly recommend it as an indispensible text which builds the foundation for a thorough understanding of the many statistical tools which have become necessary in conducting economic experimentation.

Double Betrayal: Repression and Insurgency in Kashmir: Human Rights and Insurgency in Kashmir (Carnegie Endowment Book)
Double Betrayal: Repression and Insurgency in Kashmir: Human Rights and Insurgency in Kashmir (Carnegie Endowment Book)
von Paula R. Newberg
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 6,93

5.0 von 5 Sternen A highly captivating and important work., 17. Dezember 1999
The authors have presented an informative and objective analysis of one of the least known and understood of freedom struggles to the American people. Kashmir, a region in South Asia bordered by India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and China is in a state of siege similar to Bosnia. Since the creation of India and Pakistan in August of 1947 by Great Britain, the people of Kashmir have been in a struggle to exercise their right to self-determination, as guaranteed by UN Security Council Resolutions. Thousands of young Kashmiris have lost their lives, as documented by the authors in a very revealing and understandable text.(p)
I highly encourage Westerners who value freedom and civil liberties for all peoples to read this relevant and well documented book. It is one of the finest books on modern Kashmir I have read and a moving tribute to the tragedy of a noble people who are victims of the greed and whims of corrupt politicians.

They Dare to Speak Out: People and Institutions Confront Israel's Lobby
They Dare to Speak Out: People and Institutions Confront Israel's Lobby

5.0 von 5 Sternen I found this book to be highly informative and objective., 16. Dezember 1999
I feel that this book is a must read for all Americans interested in U.S. - Middle East relations and the challenges to formulating a more balanced and just policies. Paul Findley, an Illinois Congressman for 22 years, examines the role of pro-Israel special interest groups in heavily influencing public officials and policy makers into making biased and counterproductive decisions impacting our relationship with the countries of an important region of the world. Findley has carefully researched and examined the extent of pro-Israel lobbying in this nation. While he defends the rights of American citizens to support causes they feel a moral obligation to, he argues eloquently that the interests of another country should never be placed above the interests of the United States.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding the importance of having balanced foreign policies, particularly at a time when the United States is trying to serve as an honest broker to resolving conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere. It was educational and a real eye opener to me, a seeker of truth and objectivity.

More in Common Than You Think: The Bridge Between Islam and Christianity
More in Common Than You Think: The Bridge Between Islam and Christianity
von William W. Baker
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 12,13

5.0 von 5 Sternen A timely and necessary book to shatter common misperceptions, 7. Juli 1999
William W. Baker has written a clear and concise text that calls for both Christians and Muslims to better understand the similarities and shared historical origins of each other's great faiths to reach a common ground that will provide for a better working relationship to meet the challenges facing the societies where the practioners of both religions coexist. As a Christian theologian, Baker understands that there are differences between Islam and Christianity, but these differences do not warrant tensions and hostilities between peoples. He provides a brief but poignant presentation of the historical foundation of Islam and its relationship to the other monotheistic faiths, Judaism and Christianity, whose scriptures it has embraced.(p)
Baker's main emphasis and hope throughout the book is for the reader to enhance his understanding of the need for a common ground between Christians and Muslims because of shared origins and beliefs and to use this knowledge to do further investigation on how stereotypes and misperceptions that currently exist between the two pepoles may be overcome. This is certainly a must read for everyone interested in building a society based on trust and respect for the constructive values of each other's religious beliefs.
