Why only 3 stars for something I enjoyed? Because it could have been better.
The story has an interesting setting, the characters could be a bit less typical..but the writing...that needs a little polishing. Especially the forst third of the story reads a bit rushed, Cassidy is very repetitive in her emotions - Revenge! Smoking hot dude! Magnetic sexual attraction! No! Revenge! I was born a monster and I live for my revenge!
Suffice to say that Cassidy (do not call her Cass) has a huge chip on her shoulder and does not deal so well with having her world turned upside-down and inside-out. Who can blame her?
She was left completely out of the loop, did not have any information about the supernatural world (the world of the "Charmed" as they are called here).
That changes when she stumbles across one of the smoking hot dudes mentioned above. Sir Lucian Rowle, a warlock. He tricks Cassidy into working for him. In exchange she receives a hefty salary (much needed money. With her attitude Cassidy doesn't hold jobs for long) and, more importantly, information on the hated Emilio Marchesi.
You know, the guy she needs, wants, HAS to kill to get her revenge.
He had her mother turned into a "Chosen One" (vampire) while she was pregnant with Cassidy. Neither Cassidy nor mother Blair know exactly why Cassidy survived but survived she has.
Only she is, much like Blade, neither human nor vampire. She needs people's life energy, the mana, to survive, blood or food do not sustain her.
Growing up isolated in the lukewarm care of her mother has turned Cassidy into a loner. An outsider by birth she doesn't seem to have formed connections to anyone.
So she's not exactly a people person and tends to react a bit extreme to...everything, in terms of human interaction. Especially when the people she is dealing with are, with the exception of the "golden retriever-ish werewolf" Heath, a handful of problems themselves.
Lucian is arrogant and cold (while smoldering hot, of course), Tabitha, a drake, is pretty possessive of the warlock and thus decides to dislike Cassidy. She can turn into a lizard and her people skills are what you expect of a reptile.
Then there's Ricky, an annoying imp with an addiction problem.
During the course of their work, Cassidy runs into "the other hot dude" - an (at least) medieval scottish vampire from a rival clan, responsible for cursing the Rowle family into poverty.
Their job is to bind him and the members of his clan whose bones were excavated during a dig in Venice.
Here the book picks up pace and the end opens up more questions than it solves.
I won't go into any more detail as not to spoil the story.
Overall I am definitely hoping the author continues with these books. With a bit of editing they would be even more enjoyable.
My only wish: no love triangle. That is *such* an old trope and I am pretty tired of it..

Macht Spaß und das Pendeln zur Arbeit definitiv kurzweilig.
Schade, dass das “Nachladen“ neuer Leben so lange dauert...und dass neuer Leben und Booster über den Play Store soviel teurer sind als über die amazon-App.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good ending, 7. Mai 2014

I really enjoyed the trilogy, especially the progressing relationship between the two main characters.
One thing keeps nagging me though: this is a modern interpretation of "Beauty and the Beast" and usually the Beast needs to find redemption for his actions, his character.
Now, Hauk was a good guy, before his horrible accident and certainly after.
How come he needs redemption (not saying what it is, too spoiler-y) and when it is granted why is it dependant on Jolie's love?
Why wasn't it granted on his actions alone? He has always been the good guy, self-less to the extreme. Shouldn't that have earned him his reward?
Apart from that, the books were enjoyable though I think the story line regarding the war between Ananke and the Underlight could have been handled a little better, it seemed more like a means to an end.
But for me the focus was on Jolie and Hauk anyway; I liked how Jolie went from shocked at the look of him to genuinely loving him throughout the series. She couldn't look past his scars right away, it was a believable process for her.
Hauk, now, his reactions were just heart-breaking to me. The way he believed that he was not good enough for her, that someone as beautiful as Jolie deserved better than took him right up until the end to finally believe that he deserved being loved.
Enjoyable read with some room for improvement.
Give it a try.

...after defeating two Godesses in the first two books (while gaining their powers) and becoming the "unwitting" mate of the Jesus Christ equivalent of werewolves, the protagonist NOW discovers that she is the reborn beloved wife of Odin.
During the first few books she has been threatned with rape on numerous occasions by numerous guys but was always (way too) quick to forgive and forget.
Loki, for example threatened to rape her in his sabre tooth tiger form (especially mentioning the barbed penis he possesses in this form) to get her to fight Thor's ex-wife Sif to the death. Sh later welcomes him with open arms back into the family because "everybody deserves a second chance". Say what???
Here now she is falling for Odin. At first she swears to her mate, Trevor, that there is nothing between the two. By the end of the book it is pretty certain that not only will she begin an affair with Odin but maybe with his son Thor (an ex) as well...
This book sets her upt to get hot and heavy with Anubis as well (and from what I read in multiple reviews this happens after he abducts and rapes her mind and body for a prolonged periond of time. Can you say "Stockholm syndrome"?).
I am all for strong female characters, Vervain, sadly, is far from one of them.
These books are sending the same message again and again: it is okay to threaten with physical violence, sexual assault, rape - IF you're sorry afterwards.
The female characters in these books have been malicious, enjoying torture in every way (apart from Vervain and her good friend Persephone) and get characterized as the ultimate bad - while the guys get hugs and kisses and aaaaall the understanding in the world (he isn't really bad, just misunderstood; he didn't mean it when he threatened to rape, it's his horrible past that made him like this..).
I really wish I had better things to say about these books...the premise sure was interesting but the above mentioned points really made it impossible for me to enjoy the story...what little there was of it from book 2 onwards.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Komme leider nicht umhin..., 5. Mai 2014

I really like the premise of this story.
Amethyst is a computer-wiz-turned-glass-window-artist who gets stalked. By a car. That is actually her familiar, Thalys.
Yep, Amethyst is a wizard, something she has a huge problem accepting.
The whole interaction between Amethyst and Thalys is extremely well-written and Amethyst's struggle is so real, it had me wondering if the book was really paranormal or if it was the story of mental illness.
The lenghts she goes to to keep her life just the way it is are causing her all kinds of trouble and endanger her since there is something out there stealing wizards' power, leaving them empty husks.
Things take a turn for the worse when Amethyst falls for the bad guy..or is he?
The book is slow-paced (but never boring!) until the last quarter when it really takes off. It had my heart racing and brought tears to my eyes.
I loved the ending and was very happy to find out that there will be a second book!
Going to pre-order it ASAP.
Go read thAUTOmaturgy now and while you're at it, take a look at Foreshadow by the same author. What a creepy little story...
