This book is for lovers of Auden purely, the poetry is mainly interesting in that it shows Auden collecting influences in youth, and writing amazingly complex - but not yet quite hearty - poetry. Biographically fascinating stuff. You can find such rather sentimental lines:

"Quietly I lay awake upon my bed/ As night was sweeping down the vale/ A whispr came to me that said/ 'O listen to the nightingale'"

as well as thoughtful words, such as the lovely sonnet on J.S. Bach:

No pine so firmly set, no lofty towers/ But in the end, will to the dust be hurled; Your voice will hush, Sebastian as ours/ Before the silence of a dying world/.

This, for one, could have been included in Auden's complete poems.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Politically correct, 26. Oktober 2006

Interviews with poets - a book made based from a tv film it seems - the thought behind it all is great, but I guess the live programm was better. As it is, for lovers of poetry, this impresses one as being a very open, multi cultural collection of politically correct minorities more or less. Some of the poetry really does not impress with it's poetic quality but more with the social aspects of it. The collection veers rather toward the social, how poets function in society, how poets from minorities try to sum up the minority experience, a collection less based on pure literary merit. I for one share the political view, the liberalism - but when reading poetry I could not care less about the political backdrop. At the end of the day it is all so... nice, so harmless.

5.0 von 5 Sternen For collectors and anyone interested in Gründerzeit, 26. Oktober 2006
This book is a collection of pictures and some photos of Gründerzeit interiors. This is quite rare to find, we all know what the building were like from the outside, but the ornate, rather stuffy and overly decorated interiors have been usually modernised to beyond recognition. Fascinating are the cassette ceilings, and the wall ornaments. This is a big book, useful for architects as well as antique collectors who would like to date objects - there are countless bookcases, drawers, chairs etc all very clearly shown.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Not perfect but the best there is, 15. Oktober 2006

There seems to be no perfect Japanese Language book, but at least this one does not try to do too many things at once. Each chapter is quite managable, and the quiz at the end of each lesson is helpful (the solutions are included in the book, so that self study is quite easy). The jump between Book 1 with no Kanji and book 2 with too many all at once, is artificial and annoying, but all in all this is very well written and logical. Especially useful are the lists at the end of the book, these make review and repeat much more effective. Also, the main text of each lesson (never longer than a page) contain a lot of information and are so structured that when restudied, the text immediately brings the grammar issues to mind, so one can review many lessons simply by re-reading this text.

NOT WANTED ON THE VO
NOT WANTED ON THE VO

This book is a mix of history, fiction, the absurd and the funny. The story of Noah's ark unfolds in a funny and profound way, the great flood and the lives of the remarkable characters and animals get told in a mythic and magical manner, including the thoughts of the cat - an amusic and brilliant touch. The book starts off with a short quote from genesis 7:7

" 'AND NOAH WENT IN, AND HIS SONS, AND HIS WIFE, AND HIS SONS' WIVES WITH HIM INTO THE ARK, BECAUSE OF THE WATERS OF THE FLOOD...'

Everyone knows it wasn't like that.

To begin with, they make it sound as if there wasn't any argument; as if there wasn't any panic - no one being pushed aside - no one being trampled - none of the animals howling - none of the people screaming blue murder. They make it sound as if the only people who wanted to get on board were Doctor Noyes and his family. presumably, everyone else (the rest of the human race, so to speak) stood off waving gaily, behind a distant barricade: SPECTATORS WILL NOT CROSS THE YELLOW LINE and: THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION. With all the baggage neatly labelled: WANTED or NOT WANTED ON THE VOYAGE. "

A cirque performance is always a great event, but this look into the back stage is so fascinating. Unlike other back stage looks, which concentrate on the sets, technicalities and such, the physical backstage here is much less important than the emotional back stage: the lived of the people behind the performance. And so the stories of a group of young artists are told, their daily lives followd with a voyeuristic and twinkling eye, and the drama of their lives competes well with the drama of the performance. This series shows eloquently what artists sacrifice for their art.

4.0 von 5 Sternen politically (in)correct and courageous, 8. Oktober 2006
A well though out and eloquent essay putting the early music revival in context. The wings of the early music revival, which fly on the wind of 'we are authentic while the others are not' get clipped severely. The book is however not easy reading, written rather philosophically and academically (yet not stiff or lifeless), so that reading this does demand full concentration from the reader. Yet after reading this book one cannot listen to the next performance of Jacobs, Harnoncourt or Andreas Scholl with the same ears again... What Mr. Kivy has to say needs to be said. To simplify and sum up the essence would be, that the search for 'truth' in performance cannot be based on merely historical 'truths' which in themselvs are not only open to interpretation and subjective, but also ignore the inner 'truth' of structure, harmony and drama of a piece of music.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very useful and entertaining, 8. Oktober 2006
Such a book should be available on every country. It is particularily useful for someone wanting to relocate to Holland, and almost every conceivable question one may have is answered - taxes, social security, apartments, living, shopping, health, social manners, all this and much more. It is also useful for anyone who has business dealings in the Netherlands, for it gives one a solid preparation to the mind frame of these very special folk. The book is revised each year so that the information stays current.

Vaughan Williams and the Vision of Albion
Vaughan Williams and the Vision of Albion
von Wilfrid Mellers
  Gebundene Ausgabe

5.0 von 5 Sternen Shedding light on an unknown composer, 8. Oktober 2006
Ok - everyone does know Vaughan Williams, yet,his persona never entered the canon of our cultural base, he is merely a label and not much else is known about him. This book remedies that. Mellers, himself a composer who comes from the Schoenberg school is particularily effective in giving insight through this artistic distance between the 'modern' composer, and the 'old'. Mellers shows us Vaughan Williams as a composer with a permanent look backwards at the musical past while walking forward in a steady pace. The text veers between biography and pure analysis, but is well balanced.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A fascinating piece of Music History, 8. Oktober 2006
This vastly informative book takes 5000 years of the Hofkapelle history. The Hofmusikkapelle's history gets told through a series of essays by different experts, so that the history unfolds through the varied aspects - some historical, but other pertaining to the music archive, the performance practice, the artsitic legacy etc. Each essay is supported by generous illustrations, and the illustrations - manuscripts, set designs, documents and more - are well chosen and thoughtfully put together.
