State of a Union: Inside the Complex Marriage of Bill and Hillary Clinton
State of a Union: Inside the Complex Marriage of Bill and Hillary Clinton
von Jerry Oppenheimer
  Gebundene Ausgabe

1.0 von 5 Sternen Changed My Mind About Hillary, 20. Juli 2000
Prior to reading the widely-quoted controversial selections from this book, I thought that Mrs. Clinton was a tranparently fake and self-serving political creature. But I now feel compelled to adjust that harsh opinion in light of the most recent unprincipled attacks on her. Like many politicians, and many people, there are things in Clinton's past that are a bit unseemly when seen in the full light of day. But all judgements are relative, and the vitriol of too many people on the (far) right seem far worse than anything she has done, and she has to her credit accomplishments far greater than the author of this book.

Rezension bezieht sich auf: Europe: A History (Taschenbuch)
Grand synthetic history is usually tough to write, and to read. Davies more or less succeeds in telling the story of "Europe," and it certainly passes muster for the general reader. Nonetheless, the book has some faults, particularly Davies' silly insistence that Poland is the center of Europe, the world, and the universe. But it's an easy read, entertaining, and Davies has an interesting take on things.

Pipes has shown the way to think about history. This is an exceptionally clear, concise and informed book, and the best intro I know of to Russian history. (And Pipes is to Russian and Soviet history what Posner is to the study of law.)

One of my favorite novels. You can nearly feel 1920s Moscow reading this marvellous book, which is not only bitingly funny but a subtle portrait of the place and time. Walking down Prichistenka Street you can hear the echo of Sharik's bark. I actually prefered this novel to the more famed Master and Margerita. Equally essential for any student of Russian culture or any fan of satire.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Yet Another Reason to Short the S&P, 7. Juni 2000
The manic desire of lower and middle class Americans to become rich Americans is not only ugly to watch; it's also a dangerous sign that too many people are spending to much time watching CNBC and the stock market. It's really quite easy to accumulate money - spend less, earn more, save more, buy common stocks, blahblahblah. Kinda like losing weight, but easier. The much harder and more interesting question is how to lead your life, and I bet there are better ways to spend your time than reading this book.

1.0 von 5 Sternen One more reason to limit the franchise, 7. Juni 2000
It's bad enough that any fool can vote without having self-righteous and silly charlatans getting the masses all worked up. American populist movements have always been plagued by nativism, intolerance, and blind conviction in their moral superiority. Go read Theodore Lowi and figure out how the American political process really works. You may not get the cheap thrill of smug moral correctness - if fact, you really be depressed to find out just how malaised the system really is. And you'll also be better able to have an intelligent conversation rather than spouting the same old canned psuedo-philosophy.

Only the Nails Remain: Scenes from the Balkan Wars
Only the Nails Remain: Scenes from the Balkan Wars
von Christopher Merrill
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 26,12

1.0 von 5 Sternen Typical American War Tourist, 7. Juni 2000
I read only the chapter titled "Ljubljana I," and decided to skip Ljubljana II et cetera. I have lived for some time in Slovenia, and only a smug and ignorant American academic could describe Ljubljana in the manner this author does. It appears that he decided to travel to the "dark heart of the Balkans" to "confront the brutal realities of human life" and search for "the elusive truths" blahblahblahblahblah. If you want to understand the Balkans, skip this turkey of a book. For that matter, skip Rebecca West as well, the obvious template for this silly book, and go straight to Ivo Andric.

Scoop
Scoop
von Evelyn Waugh
  Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen Required Reading, 21. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Scoop (Taschenbuch)
Every "journalist" should be forced to read this book, at gunpoint if necessary. Scoop is a great book; I found myself laughing out loud every few pages. Waugh pokes fun at numerous targets, but I think that his jabs at the newspaper trade and the pretensions of its practitioners are especially scathing. It's a tremendously funny novel, and it rings true more than six decades later. I'd give it 100 stars if I could.

I don't disagree with a lot of Moore's politics, but I find his smug and sometimes not entirely honest methods of satire to be a bit unpleasant. It's easy to preach to the choir, especially if your sermon is mostly hot air and cheap moralizing. You can read the bumper stickers at any expensive private college and skip reading this silly book. (A would-be parlor radical friend of mine gave me a copy, which I tossed into the trash after a quick reading.) My advice: Hie thee to the library and read C. Vann Woodward and learn some appreciation for the complexity of American society and politics.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Maria Schriver's a much better writer, 16. Mai 2000
From the US Constitution of (especially the commerce clause) to the German Zollverein to the EEC and EU, the history of the modern world has been one of economic integration and removal of obstacles to trade. As for this book, I'd rather spend my money on Ms. Arnold Schwartenegger's silly book than this even sillier drivel.
