Another Icarus: Percy Pilcher and the Quest for Flight
Another Icarus: Percy Pilcher and the Quest for Flight
von Philip J. Jarrett
  Gebundene Ausgabe

4.0 von 5 Sternen Philip Jarrett tells the remarkable story of Percy Pilcher, 27. Januar 2008
Could an unknown Englishman have been the first person ever to fly? Following the hundredth anniversary of the Wright brothers inaugural flight, Philip Jarrett tells the remarkable story of Percy Pilcher. He could have been the most famous aviator of them all. Four years before the Wright brothers, he had constructed his own aeroplane. But on the day it was due to take off for the very first time, something so terrible happened that he was denied the chance of ever flying it. So Philip Jarrett has rebuilt his long lost flying machine to see if Percy Pilcher, the British amateur, could have claimed the glory and been the first person ever to fly. This book mixes dramatic reconstruction with fabulous contemporary scenes and gripping science. With a specially assembled team of historians, aviation experts and a test pilot, Philip Jarrett painstakingly rebuilds Pilcher's flying machine and puts it to the test. The results will leave you cheering.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The cure for AIDS wasn't suppose to be this difficult, 27. Januar 2008
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Cure for HIV and AIDS (Taschenbuch)
Hulda Regehr Clark tells the microbiological detective story in which some of the best brains in science have been pitted against the most extraordinary bug the world has ever seen. In 1984 it was discovered that HIV was the cause of AIDS. Straight away, there were confident predictions that there would be a vaccine ready for testing in just two years. Back then, just 1,292 deaths from AIDS had been reported. Now the figure is 25 million dead. By 2010 it is predicted there will be 85 million infections and 70 million deaths. And after 20 years there is still no sign of a vaccine. Despite work of dazzling complexity, the ambition of so many brilliant scientists has been constantly thwarted. Just as a vaccine seems to be working, the AIDS virus alters itself, and ten to fifteen years of work, and millions of dollars, go down the drain. These bitter disappointments are only compounded by the desperate human urgency of the work. The virus is impervious to almost everything you throw at it, says Hulda Clark. The Cure

What You Wear Can Change Your Life
What You Wear Can Change Your Life
von Susannah Constantine
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen They give tips on the do's and don't's of dressing, 27. Januar 2008
In What You Wear Can Change Your Life, Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine talk about cloth sizes--and stressing the importance to wear the correct size so as to give the appearance of a youthful thrust to even the most deflated figure. At the same time showcasing a waist that would stop a person with a single glance. As they delve into your wardrobes, discussing the types of clothes best suited for certain-shaped women, they talk about the types of colors to be worn with different complexions, providing comparative visual images to make the examples more compelling. They also speak on footwear and shape of the legs and the importance of shoes one should buy for oneself. Practicality and money do have their role to play, but there is absolutely no reason why one should compromise when it comes to taking care of oneself. Though the title of this book makes it seem as just another superficial fashion or makeover book to be browsed at a dentist's waiting room, there is a lot to be read in between the lines, which suggests the need for women of all ages to live by first taking care of the most important, yet frequently neglected person in their lives--themselves.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Da Vinci was a genius before his time, 27. Januar 2008
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Da Vinci Notebooks (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Leonardo was born in the Tuscan town of Vinci on April 15, 1452. He was a scientist before there was science, an inventor whose ideas outstripped the technology of his time, and a famous artist who produced the most valuable and recognized painting in the world. His career was one in which he would create some of the most famous paintings in the world, including perhaps the most-widely recognized and most highly valuable painting of all time, the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci was more than just an artist, however. He was also interested in science, anatomy and architecture. His sketchbooks, filled with his ideas for inventions, stunned the world when they were found centuries after his death.

Leonardo recorded his observations about nature, architecture and anatomy into his sketchbooks. Apparently Leonardo started keeping a sketchbook to improve the quality of his paintings. He would dissect human and animal bodies to better understand how the muscles and bones inside shaped the skin. His books contained almost 200 carefully-drawn anatomical pictures of the human body. He also went into the countryside and studied the features of plants and the geology of rocks, recording them in his sketchbook. These fine details later emerged in some of his most famous paintings.

Over his career, though, these sketchbooks became more than just ways to improve his art. They were filled with pictures and notes attesting to Leonardo's wide variety of interests and his depth of understanding. Many of the pages included ideas for inventions. Some were improvements to existing machines, others were wholly new and ranged from a primitive tank to a human powered flying machine. Leonado spent his last few years in comfort. His duties for the King were light and they would spend long hours in conversation. He stayed in the King's service until his death on May 2, 1519 at the age of 67.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A lack of evidence is not proof of existence, 27. Januar 2008
Depending on what you mean by sea monsters Coleman and Huyghe's Field Guide to Lake Monsters, Sea Serpents, and Other Mystery Denizens of the Deep is an adequate introduction into the realm of mysteries of the deep. Starting with the history of these beasts carrying on to modern times introducing the reader with monsters such as sea centipede's, marine crocodiles, giant sharks, sea turtles, octopi, giant beavers, monitors, dinosaurs, and salamanders. Certainly the Jurassic seas were filled with all kinds of marine reptiles that if they were alive today would fit the description of a sea serpent. However, these creatures seemed to have disappeared about the same time the dinosaurs met their end roughly 65 million years ago. More recently the zeuglodon, a primitive form of whale, might easily be mistaken for a sea serpent if it had been alive today, though it is a mammal, not a reptile.

In the 19th century an unscrupulous promoter actually cobbled together several zeuglodon skeletons and exhibited them as an extinct sea serpent. Zeuglodons are found in the fossil record as recently 37 million years ago. Can we find more recent fossil evidence for sea serpent-type creatures? It will be hard. The best place to find ancient sea creature fossils are in ancient sea beds. The geology of the planet changes so slowly that most of the more recent sea beds, where we would expect to find evidence for any sea serpent-like creature that has developed over the last few million years, are still at the bottom of the oceans and inaccessible to us. A lack of evidence is not proof of existence, of course, so what we have in Monsters Sea Serpents Other myst Denizens Deepare is simply tantalizing stories. Suggestive and intriguing, but until somebody comes up with a well-preserved body, there is no proof.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Information on writing everyone should read, 27. Januar 2008
Aspects of the Novel by E.M. Forster, addresses both readers and aspiring writers--and gives example after example of literary masterpieces and offers techniques for writing more attentively, for noticing and thrilling in the language on the page. It comes from the wisdom of a seasoned teachers of literature, longtime journalists and host of other collected articles, and the author of fourteen works of fiction. E.M. Forster has a guarded enthusiasm for MFA programs; the book, in part, is a criticism of where some of the MFA program culture has gone astray, as if some writing workshops have become unmoored from the literary masterpieces that inspired them. If I had to really characterize the book I'd say it's about the pleasure of learning to write.

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you only get one body manual...this is the one you want, 27. Januar 2008
Mark Hyman, M.D., combines the best of conventional and alternative medicine with a blend of science, intuition, integrity, and compassion. He is editor in chief of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, the most prestigious journal in the field of integrative medicine. In Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss Dr. Hyman provides a vivid road map to navigate your way back to health and fitness. As well as help you achieve your goals for long-term weight loss without counting calories, fat grams or carbs. You don't have to starve yourself anymore. You simply need to eat in harmony with your genes.

the first step in Ultrametabolism exposes seven myths that make you unhealthy as well as gain weight and keep it on. First Dr. Hyman discusses Starvation-- "Eating less and exercising more does not equal weight loss." Next he discusses Calorie's-- "All calories are created equal." Next is Fat.-- "Eating fat makes you fat." Fourth is Carbs.-- "Eating a low carb or no carb diet will make you thin." Next Dr. Hyman discusses that skipping meals doesn't help you lose weight. Next is the French.-- "The French are thin because they drink wine and eat butter" And lastly, Dr. Hyman discusses government food policies and food industry regulations. Dr. Hyman points out that the introduction of man-made substances such as trans-fats, are adding to our overall exploding health and weight problems over the past 30 years. This consumable plastic disrupts our metabolism by actually turning on a gene in your DNA, which slows metabolism causing you to gain weight. He also discusses high-fructose corn syrup, which is used to sweeten almost everything these days. Dr. Hyman states that these supersugars quickly enter your bloodstream and trigger hormonal and chemical changes which induces insulin surges that tell your brain to eat more and your fat cells to store more fat. If there are substances and foods that we eat that can trigger negative results, then surly there are ways to make us healthy and lose weight.

The second step of Ultrametabolism teaches you to turn on your metabolism and fat burning genes, and turn off your weight gain genes. Dr. Hyman will teach you how to program your body to lose weight automatically. And in the third step Dr. Hyman shows you by providing menus and recipes, along with exercise and lifestyle treatments designed to create healthy metabolism and overall health. This part is designed so it can be customized to your unique genetic needs to optimally awaken your fat-burning DNA.

Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss will change what you believe as "conventional wisdom" concerning weight loss. Much of what you think, or may think you know about weight loss actually has been making you gain weight. Dr. Hyman points to the fact that for every diet you go on, you end up gaining five pounds in the long run. Obesity is now overtaking smoking as the number one cause of preventable deaths with almost 70 percent of the adult population and one third of our children now overweight. Compounding the problem are the profitable foods the food industry pushes, entrenched pharmaceutical companies and our own government's recommendations, especially when it comes to the food pyramid or low fat in our diets. Ultrametabolism : The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss is not just another of many weight loss books on the market. Rather, the book is your body's owner's manual for overall health. If you only get one body manual, this is, without doubt...the one you want.
