5.0 von 5 Sternen A helpful guide on turning back the aging clock, 11. Januar 2008
Many people believe they cannot prevent the physical and mental decline associated with old age. Not true. As you age chronologically, you can “reprogram” your body and its vital systems, so that you stay relatively young, biologically. Doctors Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz, experts on the aging process, explain how. Their helpful guide on reversing the damage of aging is packed with fascinating information about how your body works. It details how to enjoy a healthy, physically vibrant life well into old age. Two minor drawbacks: The writing style and layout can get way too cutesy, and many of the cartoonish line-drawings are just plain gross, depicting internal organs with smiley faces, and creepy liver-spotted characters drenched in icky goo. Otherwise, getAbstract applauds this down-to-earth, fact-filled, comprehensive guide to diet, nutrition, exercise, health and maintaining physical youth. Read it to learn how to turn back your biological clock. If you want to make staying young your new hobby, this is your user’s manual.

Integriertes Employability-Management: Arbeitsmarktfähigkeit als Führungsaufgabe
Integriertes Employability-Management: Arbeitsmarktfähigkeit als Führungsaufgabe
von Michael Kres
  Broschiert

3.0 von 5 Sternen Interessant. Und umsetzbar?, 6. Juli 2007

Success Built to Last: Creating a Life That Matters
Success Built to Last: Creating a Life That Matters
von Jerry I. Porras
  Gebundene Ausgabe

4.0 von 5 Sternen Familiar advice from high achievers, 4. Januar 2007
From 1996 to 2006, Jerry Porras, Stewart Emery and Mark Thompson interviewed more than 200 "enduringly successful people," seeking their personal insights as a follow-up to Porras’ bestselling book Built to Last. The authors began each interview with an open-ended question designed to provoke an unstructured conversation about the meaning of success. The authors drew from these highly personalized revelations to extrapolate the qualities that high achievers share, particularly a driving desire to have meaningful impact. The authors vetted their perceptions by surveying business experts about their findings. While the book’s ideas aren’t new - follow your passion, be optimistic, build a great team - they are reliable, and the insight into business celebrities’ thoughts is instructive and valuable. If you share the drive to make a difference and lead a life of purpose, we recommend this book. It can help you pursue your goals with gusto.

4.0 von 5 Sternen All you ever feared about Alan Greenspan, 4. Juli 2006
In this powerful, disturbing book, author Ravi Batra criticizes financial icon Alan Greenspan's 14-year stint as chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Greenspan steadily promoted his own ambitions and agenda, getting pretty much what he wanted in the secretive world of the Fed. The author says Greenspan often calculatedly used deceptive, incomprehensible language to hide his intentions and goals. Though this book uses much clearer language, it necessarily meanders, since understanding why Greenspan hid his motives and how he sold his policies requires a crash course in advanced economics, the Fed, politics and history. Greenspan is an ideologue whose long history is intertwined with complex economic theories. Batra tries to untangle enough of the U.S. economy's inner workings to prove his contention that Greenspan perpetrated a national intellectual fraud. Even absent a smoking gun, Batra is clear on who he thinks wears the black hat. When he discusses the deficit and the failure to secure Social Security, he doles out plenty of blame for Greenspan to share with both political parties, Congress and a handful of presidents. We suggest this exposé to corporate treasurers, economists, business strategists, CEOs and financial reporters. Batra says that Greenspan’s policies have left future generations with a drastically changed world, and yet, most folks will have no idea what hit them.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Well supported, refreshing take on government involvement in business, 19. Juni 2006
Privatization was in vogue during the eighties and nineties. It aimed to eliminate, or at least reduce, corruption, inefficiency and the politicization of economic matters and it often succeeded. However, in some cases, such as the World Bank, it failed so egregiously that even its erstwhile supporters began to have second thoughts about the wisdom of encouraging the state to manage basic infrastructures and industries. Authors Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Oran R. Young, Matthias Finger and Marianne Beisheim explore the experience of privatization and investigate the factors that have led to some of its successes and failures. They are not entirely free from bias, but the pro-privatization forces have so long dominated the public discussion that we find this well-supported counterargument refreshing, and recommend this book to public and private sector executives and managers as well as to political officials.

4.0 von 5 Sternen How to make projects work, in 100 day increments, 19. Juni 2006
Authors and consultants Robert H. Schaffer and Ronald N. Ashkenas address their book to leaders who face the challenge of making rapid changes in their organizations especially to those who know they need to move performance to a higher level, yet are too impatient to execute large-scale change. Schaffer and Ashkenas flatly deny that you need to make any trade-off between short-term gains and long-range organizational capabilities. They offer advice about such changes as new information systems, research and development, product innovation, mergers and acquisitions, and even the use of rapid-results projects in developing countries. Essentially, they take a step-by-step approach to building your organization's ability to achieve short-term change with long-term impact. Despite the authors' occasional self-promotional moments, we find that they offer solid, worthwhile information for CEOs, project managers and other executives.

4.0 von 5 Sternen An exploration of consciousness for expert readers, 19. Juni 2006
Philosopher and author David J. Chalmers makes an ambitious, daring attempt to expand the understanding of consciousness. Although he admits that his sympathies are with materialism, he concludes that materialist (physical) explanations cannot account for the existence of consciousness. His theory of consciousness is based in the natural world, but he proposes that consciousness has both physical and nonphysical properties. He suggests that a set of psychophysical laws are needed to explain the how and why of consciousness. Although parts of this book are densely technical and call for readers with a thorough background in mathematics, physics and philosophy, Chalmers has taken pains to make his material as accessible as possible to the average well-educated person. He even puts asterisks beside sections that lay readers are likely to find too daunting, and notes those sections general readers might most productively read, skim or ignore. We suggest this book to well-schooled readers who are interested in the philosophy of the mind, cognition or psychology.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The definitive report on the war in Iraq, 1. Juni 2006
Discussion of the Iraq War focuses as much on politics as on combat, and the debate about its management will continue for decades. This contentious global event mixes bad intelligence, bad politics, bad planning, huge antagonistic personalities and a smattering of good intentions. Authors Michael R. Gordon and General Bernard E. Trainor describe the power and limitations of new technologies, and detail the war's history, battles and personalities. Their gripping battle accounts have the power of a war novel. The Iraq conflict suffered from the fog of war that plagued almost every other modern clash, so discerning clear policy motives is difficult. Few heroes emerged from the halls of adminstration, where leaders bitterly disagreed with each other and with many in the outside world. Understanding this complex global event requires mastering many social and economic forces. We find that this large, well-researched volume is - so far - the indispensable, definitive source on the Iraq War.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Detailed manual for connecting and closing complex sales, 23. Mai 2006
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Selling to Big Companies (Taschenbuch)
This succinct, concise, pointed, clearly written guide will help anyone who aims to sell to big companies. Author Jill Konrath is practical, focused and no-nonsense. She includes few of the personal yarns that freckle most such manuals, but enough to let readers know that she writes from experience. Much of what she says is common sense and should be general knowledge. For example, it is hard to imagine that any salesperson would waste time on self-promotion when customers really need and want solutions to their own problems. Yet many sales guides - including this one - emphasize the need to ask questions and offer solutions, so the emphasis must be necessary. The author provides a straightforward how-to manual, with step-by-step guides. She is not afraid to tackle the most elementary matters, such as how to write a letter or how to script a call. We find that this book deserves a place on the shelf of any sales manager or salesperson who is targeting big companies.
