4.0 von 5 Sternen Pulp-ish fiction, but good, 4. Juli 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Black Dahlia (Taschenbuch)
I rarely read a book like this but I picked this one up after I found out he wrote the book that LA Confidential (the movie) was based on. The style is pure film noir and, while this style has been done by many, Ellroy marks his own style. Written with twists and turns galore, the book is extremely engaging. I couldn't put the thing down. He does a great job of bringing his characters to life and (for me) more importantly making the time and place feel like reality. My only complaints are two things he employs that I feel are the primary annoying aspects of most popular fiction. First, the use of sex scenes as some kind of emotional release even when there is no established connection between the two people. Second, the ending of a chapter at a critical point only to move onto other characters and another event so as to keep us holding our breaths.

5.0 von 5 Sternen My bible, 24. Juni 2000
This book made a deep impression on me when I first read it in high school. Recommend to me by a friend, I found myself experiencing the nausea Sartre's main character experiences. I think this is why some people talk about this book being boring or mindless. It is in a sense. Sartre will take you there. But I couldn't put this book down. This was a familiar feeling to me and I wanted to know what was going to happen to this man. The ending of the book is the only slight flaw. Not that you don't pick out the resolution but because it is a little light and Sartre's mechanism for the main character's resolution is a little cheesy. At any rate it still works and as a result the thoughts are in my mind often.

The Fall (Vintage International)
The Fall (Vintage International)

5.0 von 5 Sternen My favorite Camus book, 24. Juni 2000
First, I have a deep love of Camus' writing. He is one of the few writers I know who can really write a sentence that flows off of my brain. Everything he writes seems so effortless and subtle. Given this admiration, The Fall is by far Camus' most engaging work. As stated elsewhere the title refers to one man's descent from a moral highpoint through his own undoing - acurately understanding who he is. It is a spellbinding journey as this man reveals himself. Throughout this story however, Camus is scathingly witty and funny at times. My copy is dog-eared every 10 pages because of some sentence that was a quote to remember. I cannot recomend it enough.

2.0 von 5 Sternen After a great start I felt I was being talked down at, 24. Juni 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Fountainhead (Taschenbuch)
I was incredibly engaged in this book when I first started it. 70 pages in I was excited about where this story was going. Around 100 pages I got this horrible feeling that the world Rand was creating was so unbelievably black and white that the book seemed to be written by a 15 year old who could use adult's words. There is no gray in this book. Every aspect of it is hardcore extreme in its stance. I never finished the book. Around page 200 I felt I was reading, 'This good, that bad'.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great for a beginner looking for everything., 24. Juni 2000
Haven't finished this book yet but after reading a few chapters and skimming through the rest this was the perfect book for me. My level of programming is quite small - minor programming in highschool and graduate school with old languages (e.g., fortran77). The book picks up with things I knew but kind of wanted to reread again (dimensioning, basic functions, etc.). I can see someone familiar with this type of language not liking this book so much. But the book does seem to go into very great detail about more advanced topics later on.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not at the right level for me, 14. Mai 2000
I can see this being an appropriate book for some but I ended up reading half of this book, not learning much new, and then giving up. I had used Outlook for about 1 year before picking this up and was hoping to take my knowledge of the software to a new level. It seemed to spend way too much time explaining straightforward stuff. It's not that I mind having this stuff explained, it just seemed the author went into stuff in exasperating detail (which may be for some). Even if I was a beginner I would prefer something more concise.
