2.0 von 5 Sternen liked The Secret Sharer more, 27. Juni 2000
I really enjoyed the psychological aspects of the "Secret Sharer." The inner-thoughts provoked by the Captain's doppleganger, Leggatt, serve to make the story a true masterpiece. Heart of Darkness is no light reading, yet can is interesting in that it is a quasi-mystery.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Witty, Insight about General Topics of Life, 14. Juni 2000
Much as in The Autocrat at the Breakfast Table, in which ideas are thrown around under the premise of a breakfast room table conversation, Voltaire expresses his philosophical insights by having his character (Candide) engage himself in a number of conversations with a wide range of people. The book is intriguing and is filled with excellent topics for conversation.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Entertaining and Good Insight into Music, 30. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Master Class (Taschenbuch)
I have played violin since age 4 hence especially enjoyed Maria's passion for music. Her eccentricities with the students and her theatrical manner are traits with which practically anyone in the music business is destined to encounter in his or her career. Also, the significance of Maria, Ari, and Ms. Kennedy-Onassis (only briefly referred to) adds another interesting element to the play.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Cliche Story of Black America in the 1950's, 29. Mai 2000
I kept thinking something new and original would happen, but it didn't. The characters are very stereotpyical; the courage of moving into a white neighborhood (that an aspect of the book deals with) is no different than what one would expect from any work of fiction about Black America. One character relationship I did find interesting was Beneatha and Lena (Mama). They have several interesting interaction/ conflicts over religion and Beneatha's looking for her African identity. Perhaps novel in its time, this work is outdated.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting Commentary and Psychology on War, 25. Mai 2000
While the words "Nazi", "Germany", "Hitler", and "Norway" are never mentioned in the novel, it is evident from context that the book deals with the Nazi invasion of Norway. The idea is that Germany's government is so centralized and repressive that they have prevented their people from developing skills like thinking for themselves and leadership. As Mayor Orden (the mayor of the invaded town) says, even if he is shot, a free people will rise to the occasion under a new leader. Because all orders came straight from the top, the Germans did not have this flexibility.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Emotional Plea Against Unrestricted Capitalism, 21. Mai 2000
The hardships of the Joad family faced in the Era of Big Business in the early half of the 20th century are accurate representations of the lives of many Americans of that time. Steinbeck hints at socialist programs as the answer to many of capitalist shortcomings. As readers, we can identify with the Joad family through their ups and downs. This is certainly the best book I have read all year.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Psychologically challenging account of Lost Generation, 15. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Sun Also Rises (Taschenbuch)
These characters' personas must have been exactly what Gertrude Stein had in mind when she coined the term "Lost Generation." Especially Lady Brett Ashley fits this mold of a woman who has lost her idealism and has saught refuge in a pretend world of alcohol-inspred giggles. The details of European life coupled with the fascinating character interactions--of narrator Jake Barnes, Lady Brett Ashley, ex-boxer and Jew Robert Cohn, and Brett's fiance Mike--make for an exceptional novel

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating, 30. April 2000
I have been reading this book now off and on for over a year and have finally finnished it. Marcus' thoughts on "the whole" and nature are fascinating. One of my favorite passages was when he said that Caesar's brilliant oratory used simple words which were straight to the point "like the blast of a trumpet, not the trill of a flute."
