Truthful, funny and warm., 23. Juli 2013
"How To Be German" is a must read for anyone thinking of moving to Germany. Some of the most basic and fundamental survival skills are included- look in the eyes when you Prost! Empty road? Egal!! You must wait for the Ampelmännchen! I read the original blog post before moving to Germany and it filled me with fear- how could I possibly connect with people who lovingly wear house shoes for no apparent reason? Now, I share the warmth which Fletcher clearly feels for this wonderful country full of eccentricities.
This book is extremely enjoyable to read- it reads from one funny observation to the next. Rarely, do I laugh out loud at text, but this book elicited that response from me. Fletcher's truthful pops at the oddities of German life are in no way edited, but are written in such a way that make you want to leap into the bizarre world of Leben in Deutschland. His clear affection for this country shines through every joke, and therefore make it read like a playful teasing of one you love. His tongue is as firmly in his cheek, as his heart is in the right place.
Besides, if you learn nothing else from this funny little book, you will realize that German's are big on pragmatism. If you think German life is weird, well, chances are you haven't thought about it logically.
