  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 21,00

5.0 von 5 Sternen Interessant, und mathematisch nicht banal, 14. Oktober 2015

5.0 von 5 Sternen Extraordinary lucid and readable!, 8. August 2015

This is real gem to read. The first part of the book is more of a partial biography, sprinkled with a lot of dry humour. The second half relates Prof. Ernst's problems in academia, when trying to put alternative medicine and healing on scientific feet. If you think that the university world is free of group-think and corruption, you are far off the mark. When money, personal standing and group-think are involved, the scientific method has a difficult life even in university research-labs or departments. Many of the related stories seem applicable to the global warming craze, where analogous Zeitgeist, zealotry and post-normal attitude seem to be the norm.I can not but admire Prof. Ernst's standing power!

Lone Star Rising: The Texas Rangers Trilogy
Lone Star Rising: The Texas Rangers Trilogy
Preis: EUR 20,99

4.0 von 5 Sternen Well written history of Texas Ranger and US Civil War problems, 16. Dezember 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This is an easy to read and exciting book about Texas, the American pioneers and original inhabitants (mostly Comanches) and their battle for survivable. The problems for people who refused to be put into one of the camps of the US civil war are well laid out. I continuously marvel on what these pioneers (and their opponents) were capable to endure.

The Analogue Alternative (Routledge Studies in the History of Science, Technology and)
The Analogue Alternative (Routledge Studies in the History of Science, Technology and)
von James S. Small
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 48,68

4.0 von 5 Sternen A very precise history of analogue computing, 8. September 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
James Small has written a very detailed history of analogue computers: the emphasis is on ***history***, not on the technical details of analogue computing, which are very few here. For these ( for instance how does a mechanical integrator work) you should look elsewhere (e.g. here: <a href=[...] . But if you are interested in the companies, people, military and other governement agencies involved in pushing this type of computers, you will find breathtaking details here. I especially liked the very large collection of references and links at the end of each chapter. A book to be recommended for those interested in these long forgone types of computers, which at a time were 1000 times faster than their digital competitors.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A marvelous epic story, 23. Mai 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Lonesome Dove (Kindle Edition)
This large story about western cowboys, Texas rangers, pioneer women and whores makes for a wonderful reading. Landscapes and humans are painted with masterly strokes, and the book is so good that pausing reading is difficult. Everyone who has visited the West of the USA finds situations and descriptions which ring many bells.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A favorite oldie, 15. März 2014

Rezension bezieht sich auf: QEdit Code Editor ( Free ) (App)
I am a longtime fan of Qedit, this easy to use , lean and simple tool for quickly writing text. Qedit works fine on the Kindle HD, I find the possibikity to manually slide a very visible pointer to the desired location very handy. My only (major!) complaint is the confusing behaviour to save/save as a file, as the program gives no clear indication what it is doing, and that the command has been successful.

Colossus: The Secrets of Bletchley Park's Code-breaking Computers
Colossus: The Secrets of Bletchley Park's Code-breaking Computers
von B. J. Copeland
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 16,90

5.0 von 5 Sternen A very complete look into Bletchley Parks first "real" computer, 11. Januar 2014
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This is a massive "multi author" book where the principal surviving persons involved in the Bletchley Park adventure come to word. Many details of the cryptographic/deciphering jobs appear here for the first time. Jack Copeland does not hide his displeasure that the Fowler and his Colossi are very often by-passed in the historical computer literature, where the ENIAC usually is cited as the first computer. The long (and unnecessary) inforced UK secrecy did much harm to the pioneers, and robbed them of an appraisal they should have received. I reaf many books on Bletchley Park, and this is certainly one to recommend.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The privatisation of war, 12. Dezember 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This is a very readable book, showing how the sovereign state (of US) stopped using his mission to intervene, plan and execute armed conflicts and left this job to the private industry, where well-paid mercenaries act without ever being responsible for their acts before a jury. It makes a chilling reading, especially as the usual big companies (like Haliburton) and their associate politicians seem to push armed conflicts in a manner that maximizes their own financial interests.

The Man Who Invented the Computer: The Biography of John Atanasoff, Digital Pioneer
The Man Who Invented the Computer: The Biography of John Atanasoff, Digital Pioneer
von Jane Smiley
  Gebundene Ausgabe
Preis: EUR 24,54

5.0 von 5 Sternen A very readable and intersting biography, 10. Oktober 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
This is an easy to read, captivating biography about an inventor (and his student and co-inventor Berry) whose name is often passed over in the writings of the history of early computers. Especially interesting is the story about the ENIAC co-inventor J. Mauchly and what he really took home after spending some time looking at the ABC computer (and squeezing J. Antanasoff for information).
