4.0 von 5 Sternen Only if you're interested in the making of the covers, 21. Januar 2011
Länge:: 0:37 Minuten

This book is presented in hardcover, roughly the same size as the comics. Inside, it collects cover art of the single issue volume 1-50, trade paperback volumes 1-8, Books 1-4 and Deluxe Hardcovers 1-2. There are also sketches and unused designs.

If you are a collector of the comics, you already have majority of the art. The reason to buy this book is probably the commentary if you're interested in how they come up with the covers. Creator Robert Kirkman, artists Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard look back in hindsight at what they like and the ones that didn't work out well.

The art is beautiful but there are a few misses as well - all that are mentioned in the commentary provided.

This book is more for the ultimate collectors. Casual fans probably can do without it. Besides, most of the cover art can be found easily online.

This book made my face light up. Packed in this 160-page book is a collection of new artwork from Terryl Whitlatch. You won't see any of her Star Wars creatures that appeared in The Wildlife of Star Wars - you should probably get that book as well.

The gallery consist of paintings and sketches of real and imagined animals. The designs for the imaginative creatures are beautiful and believable. There are sea, land and flying creatures. Great variety.

Many sketches are included, some picked from her art classes. For selected creatures, they are so detailed separate drawings on the muscular anatomy and bone structure are included. Scribbled on the sketches are labels and notes, though a bit small but only because there's so much packed onto the page.

Besides creature concept art, there are also stylized character designs. Rocket rhinos, psychotic pandas, comical cerberus, cupid frogs are just some of the many animated ideas. They are really fun to look at.

This isn't an instructional book so there aren't pointers on how to draw, but you can get lots of ideas or understand what's possible just by looking at the drawings.

This inspiring book is highly recommended to anyone who loves animal art.

More of "Chinese Illustrators" than "Chinese Illustration". The art featured are very random and raw. There are sketches, graphic design, collages, children drawings, etc.

Visually, there's a lot going on. However, the artworks are close to experimental than exceptional. It feels very much like a scrapbook or sketchbook of coloured illustrations.

It's a difficult book to give a rating to.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good stories, not so good lettering, 13. Januar 2011
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Beasts of Burden (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Länge:: 0:38 Minuten

It's rare to see animals as main characters in comics. That's one of the main reason I picked up the book. The other reason is because the art from Jill Thompson looks good.

The general premise is about a group of dogs and cats dealing with seemingly supernatural events that are happening around their neighbourhood. The story is darker than I thought but well written and told. The characters have personalities and the stories are fun and exciting.

One thing that really bugged me is the lettering used. The whole story is told in a series of short chapters - maybe that was how the original comic was released but I'm not sure. The lettering is inconsistent throughout the chapters. There are the all uppercase (typical), sentence case (not so bad), sentence case but with uppercase height (worst of the lot in terms of legibility), and sometimes the animals will have their own unique lettering style. The inconsistency of lettering is quite jarring across chapters.

The comic overall is entertaining but the lettering takes away a bit of the experience.

The EXOTIQUE series continue to feature beautiful CG character art. In volume 6, 229 artists have contributed 344 pieces of artwork. 95 artists are new. The printing is brilliant and the colours are really vibrant, almost too vibrant.

There are a couple of 3D modeled characters in the sea of painted ones, and the majority are on human characters. I actually like the non-human characters because since they aren't human, there's always an element of surprise with what you see. The non-human characters are quite good, just too bad there aren't more. Too bad there aren't any series featuring only non-human characters at the moment.

Since every piece is digitally created, the style of art is pretty similar - which may be the book's selling point here. But when your style of art is similar and everyone is good technically, it's hard to stand out. Yes, the costumes and pretty faces are awesome, but what I find lacking is the dynamic poses, especially of characters in action. Most of the characters are created with a particular role in mind, so it will really add to the character and personality if that role is acted out more clearly.

Other than the minor quibble, EXOTIQUE 6 is a book I can still recommend to CG artists. The selling point is digital character art and you know that already.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Visual companion, not art book, 6. Januar 2011
Länge:: 1:00 Minuten

The Art of Tron: Legacy is more of a visual companion than an art book. Whenever there's "art of" somewhere in the book title, it sets people up with certain expectations. This title definitely sets up the wrong type of expectation, at least to me.

About half the book is concept art and the other half is just film stills, and even if it's not exactly half, it feels that way.

Much of the concept art are actually the finalized designs. You won't see much iterations. It's like they nailed the design of the Light Cycle bike with the first try. Same applies for characters and environments. And the Light Jets are missing.

The selection of films stills included is also questionable, but I'm glad for the most part they look stunning visually, especially the ones that are showing more of the Tron world.

This book should still appeal to Tron fans. I'm not so hot about the book, but I've two colleages (fans of the film) raves about it.

As an art book, I'll give it 3 stars. As a visual companion or picture book, 4 out of 5 stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen It has more than what you saw in the film, 5. Januar 2011

Weta Workshop is a brand that's synonymous with quality creative work. The Art of District 9 is another testament to the amazing work they do, on top of what they have already done - Avatar, Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Narnia.

The Art of District 9 is a 160-page hardcover. This book actually cost a few dollars less than typical art books of this size. This is a fantastic bargain.

The book is filled with concept art. Most of the things you see are in their various stages of development, from the idea to the final designs. There are lots of iterations for character designs, the aliens, props, weapons, the mothership and many other stuff. All the visuals in the book are in high resolution with great detail.

What you see in the film is actually a small part of what's presented in the book. You can see a discarded concepts like crazy Organ Retriever which can harvest organs at the press of a button (I suppose), and then there's the variation of the exo suit which was designed to the stage where a life-size model was created and then dropped - I can't even begin to imagine how it feels like to have work at that stage of completion thrown out. And there are a few impressive mothership designs which weren't used as well.

Other than the illustrated art, there are also lots of pictures on the sculpts created. What impresses me are the weapon designs. They look really good, and they are printed really big, and there are lots of them.

Lead conceptual designer Greg Broadmore, creature designer David Meng, Neill Blomkamp and other artists provide good insight into the conceptualization process with their commentary.

This is one of the better art books for 2010.

Highly recommended.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Non-technical starter guide, 28. Dezember 2010

Stan Lee's How to Draw Comics is a starter guide to drawing comics aimed at beginners.

It introduces the world of comics and what you need to create them. It covers the basic topics like drawing, storytelling, finding work, etc. There are lots of useful comic creation tips discussed, complimented by examples from popular artists like Jack Kirby, Neal Adams, Frank Cho and the likes.

This isn't a technical book so there aren't any how-to or step-by-step tutorials. When you finish the book, you'll know what it takes to create comics but you'll have to get other comic drawing books to learn the technical skills. Most of the chapters introduced in this book are actually subjects that already have whole books devoted to them.

This book is recommended to beginners who have absolutely no prior knowledge on creating comics. That said, if you're past that stage, you should skip this and get books devoted to specific subjects.

The Designer's Graphic Stew is a quick resource for any designers looking for examples of different graphic elements used in action. It has loads of those examples in many variations, covering subjects like typography, picture cropping, colour combination, composition, layout, repeat patterns and many more.

The lessons on design techniques are really brief so they don't really teach much on design. Right at the end of the book is a gallery of real world examples with commentary on the design techniques used.

It's a pretty handy reference overall.
