3.0 von 5 Sternen A very different style of drawing, 25. Februar 2011
Länge:: 1:00 Minuten

(Please ignore my starred rating because I can't rate what I don't truly understand.)

The multiple 5-star reviews on Amazon lead me to get this book. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I expected.

The book teaches expressive drawing as compared to representational drawing. Whether or not you'll like this book will depend on which drawing style you like.

Representational drawing aims to create a likeness to what's seen. Expressive drawing, at they teach in this book, aims to link the artwork to your ideas and emotions.

The guided lessons cover the art basics such as line, shapes, balance and others. There aren't any lessons on rendering shadows (representational art) or composition (e.g. golden arc/rectangle or guiding the eye).

Many lessons are give ideas on loosening up and playing around with art, with respect to the particular subject taught. However, the emphasis is on enjoying the drawing process, rather than worrying about the end product. Maybe because of that, many examples fall into the category which I'm not particularly fond of -- abstract art. I feel that it's difficult to appreciate these artwork unless you're the one who create them.

You can preview more pages on Google Books - I wish I had - before deciding if it's your type of book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful, functional, eco-friendly products, 24. Februar 2011
Länge:: 1:21 Minuten

The book features 1000 eco-friendly designs on its 352 pages. It's beautifully laid out like a classy furniture catalog except without the price tags. There are information on the materials used for production and also a website included.

The designs are beautiful and look functional. It includes furniture, lighting, kitchens & bathrooms, textiles, decorative accessories, tableware, walls & floors, products, outdoors and kids products. The range and variety is good.

Product designers should find this book inspiring. Maybe shoppers too.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A visual hurricane, 23. Februar 2011
Länge:: 1:51 Minuten

This art book is way thicker than I expected. It's 256 pages in a wide format hardcover. Nice.

Zack Synder's previous films (300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardian) have a thing for CGI and Sucker Punch is not exception.

This art book (and film) is like a pop culture hurricane. There girls with guns and blades, robots, orcs, castles, machine gun welding giant samurais, dragons, zombies, orcs, castles, theater and brothel. All these are from the vivid imagination of the lead, Babydoll.

The visuals in the book is a mixture of photos and art. There aren't much character art for the girls with the exception for Babydoll which has more (but in manga style). The art is various (few) alternate costumes. What you have is lots of stunning photography that ranges from the I'm-cute-and-I'm-in-an-asylum look to the I'm-going-to-kill-you-with-my-gun-and-dark-eye-shadows portraits. I like the idea large two-page portrait but unfortunately the photos aren't sharp enough at that size.

There are more art for other characters, such as the awesome samurai who likes big guns, Meka (yes, a mecha), soldiers, knights, a generic looking dragon, robots, zombies and orcs who look like cousins from their LOTR counterpart. Other art includes the sets like the castle, the mental institution, cathedral, city and Japanese temple. There are also miscellaneous stuff like the flying bomber and weapons (few). Most of the art looks digitally created.

Commentary is rather sparse other than the captions. Zack Synder seems to be the author. It would be better if there were more insights on the art which is what is lacking.

Overall, the book is a very decent art companion and is well worth the price.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Nice book for the anime and manga fans of the series, 21. Februar 2011
Länge:: 0:53 Minuten

Der Mond: The Art of Neon Genesis Evangelion is just one of the many books on the popular anime. Many of them are in Japanese. This is one that's translated to English by publisher Viz Media. It's a larger than usual art book, hardcover, 120 pages and reads from right to left.

It collects the art of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the Japanese artist who created the characters for Evangelion. The pages are filled with huge beautiful prints. If you collect the manga series, you'll find some pieces familiar because they are the chapter splash pages. Most of the art are character based, and there are also some sketches which I like.

It's not all Evangelion art though. Towards the back there are also illustrations from other projects like games and other anime. The only I recognise is Fatal Fury fighting game. The others are The Wings of Honneamise, Leiqunni Nondelaiko, Nadia of the Mysterious Seas, Aoki Uru and others. There's even an album cover for Eric Clapton.

There isn't any commentary beside the credits for the illustrations.

Nice book for the anime and manga fans of the series.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Amazing variety but more doodle-like, 20. Februar 2011
Länge:: 1:00 Minuten

You'll never know what's in a sketchbook. That's one of the surprises for opening them.

In this thick 352-page paperback, 110 artists and designers are featured. A lot of graphic designers are unfamiliar to me but I do spot a few illustrators like Gary Baseman, James Jean (he seems to be in a lot of sketchbook collections), infographics maestro Nigel Holmes, John Cuneo.

The illustrative style is incredibly varied and the drawing subjects random. The work featured range from scrappy sketches to photographic collages. Each is a snapshot of the artist's mind. However the sketches are nothing like the commercial work the artists do, with the exception of a few. Compared to other sketchbook collections, this book is less illustrative in the sense that the drawings are more doodle-like.

The commentary is concise, sure, but could have been longer for more reading pleasure. The websites of all the artists are included at the back of the book.

If you're not into any specific subjects and like doodles, you might like this book.

There are two publishers for this book namely The Monacelli Press and Thames & Hudson. The editions are priced differently, but should contain the same content. On Amazon UK, Thames & Hudson's edition is much cheaper.

5.0 von 5 Sternen An artist on top of his game, 19. Februar 2011
Länge:: 1:06 Minuten

Aleksi Briclot is a French artist born in 1978. He creates concept art and has worked for many big name publishers like Marvel, Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard Entertainment and many more.

Worlds & Wonders is a large format hardcover that even comes with a page ribbon. It's 192 pages, not whatever is listed on Amazon. The art book features his professional work from 2003 to 2010. You'll see lots of beautiful illustrations and concept art. Some of the pieces you might have seen in the Spectrum annuals, but there are so much more here. The creations are imaginative, characters and worlds believable and alive, regardless of whether it's fantasy or sci-fi.

Paintings are printed gloriously big. Even those small pieces of art on Magic the Gathering cards are blown up to full page. Although intended for small format, the art on the card has enough details for a wall painting, and that applies to every other artwork in the book. This book is paintings all the way, with sketches appearing on the gatefolds that start every chapter.

The commentary, in French and English, are mainly quotes from his fellow peers.

Worlds & Wonders is a collection of top notch art that is inspiring and simply amazing. Aleksi Briclot is an artist on top of his game.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home., 10. Februar 2011
Länge:: 1:15 Minuten

Botany for the Artist is a gorgeous reference for plants. The pages are filled with a mix of photographic plant portraits and Sarah Simblet's detailed sketches. Everything's beautifully laid out. The exquisite illustrations in the book are mainly black and white.

As with typical DK books, it's also filled with educational information. Every part of the plant is explored, from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers to the fruits. They are provided with scientific names and also interesting information on how they grow and their functions.

The drawing lessons are short two-page guides at drawing found throughout the book. There are tips on capturing likeness, establishing the composition, adding colours and details. Also included are selected features on Renaissance botany artist.

This is an excellent resource for botany artists. Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Accessible and inspirational, 8. Februar 2011
Länge:: 0:26 Minuten

Pen and Pencil Drawing Techniques has two parts, one dedicated to pencil and the other to pen. The pencils covered are the usual pencils with a small section on coloured pencils. The pens covered are the crow quill and the technical pen.

There are many step by step examples which are easy to follow along. The instructions are concise and well explained. There are the usual lessons on hatching but they are short. The book's method of teaching is by getting to the drawing demonstrations quickly, getting you to practice the techniques learned instantly.

A good variety of tips and techniques are discussed, and that encourages experimentation. It's a book one I go back to often to explore new drawing methods, or just to look at the many beautiful sketches.

It's great for beginners and intermediate artists. It's very accessible and inspirational.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Celebration of OFFF, 31. Januar 2011
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Aim High, Keep Moving! (Taschenbuch)
Länge:: 0:47 Minuten

Aim High, Keep Moving! is a book published to celebrate the 10th anniversary of OFFF. OFFF is a cultural event that happens every year that attracts artists, designers, musicians, etc. It's like an art pilgrimage.

The book is 356 pages, actually less as the last few pages are blank lined pages. It's a hardcover with a rubber band attached to hold the book together. There are also some stickers included, and a short film on DVD.

Everything inside is designed like scrapbook style. There are lots of drawings, scrawl, collages and photos. The visuals are very random. They are connected in the sense that the contributing artists all write and talk about their experiences at the OFFF festivals, the different years they went, the people they met and the activities happening there.

It's through the book that you can get a glimpse of what OFFF is about. You can go to their website to find out more.

Cool book but it should appeal more to those who like scrapbooks.
