The Marvel Art of Mike Deodato
The Marvel Art of Mike Deodato

One artist, hardcover, 240 pages. The Marvel Art of Mike Deodato is in pretty much the same format as other artist art books Marvel published recently, like The Marvel Art of Marko Djurdjevic and The Marvel Art of Joe Quesada.

Although Mike Deodato has a career in comics spanning more than 2 decades, the majority of work featured here are from 2002 to 2010.

The first chapter is dedicated to a selection of covers from that time. There are works from, just to name a few, Amazing Spider-Man, Dark Avengers, She-Hulk, Tigra, Punisher, Wolverine, X-Men, etc.

The later chapters are each dedicated to bigger titles, namely Thor, Elektra, Hulk, Spider-man, Thunderbolts, Avengers, X-Men, and a chapter collecting some other titles.

The art is fantastic of course, characterised by what the editors would say, "Tight pencils". The covers are nicely printed large, with the white space occasionally filled by the inked versions or pencils. You'll see quite a lot of pieces beautifully coloured by Rain Beredo. This is a best-of-the-best collection after all, so some covers have to be left out. There are a couple of pages on interior panel art.

I like the play on title logos when he's given the freedom to do so, especially those from the She-Hulk series. A nice one is of a villain holding a big slate of concrete HULK logo aiming at She-hulk. I also like the Spider-man and X-men art.

The text comes in the form of first person commentary and also quotes from other artists. There's quite a bit on his background. If you're wondering what's deal with him and Deodato studios, it's all in the interview as well. It's interesting to find out that he's into martial arts as a sport.

Splendid art book.

It's a great idea to release a penciled version of graphic novel once in a while.

Batman: Hush Unwrapped Deluxe is basically the same book as Batman: Hush with dialogue and all, except everything is in pencils. The only coloured bits are the sound effects and Batman's internal narration.

Reading the book in just pencils is quite a different experience. It's basically like looking at the final draft of the book before the go ahead for inking. If you're marveled by Jim Lee's art in the coloured edition, you'll be blown away by this edition - if you're a comic artist maybe your brain will explode with awe.

Every page is filled with detailed pencil work, deserving a slow peruse. The amazing pencil hatches and shading are everywhere, on the characters, the backgrounds. After reading the book, you'll probably get a new sense of appreciation for comic artists and the art of making comics. This book is definitely a collectors' edition for fans.

As for the story, the storytelling is good and well paced, there are some surprises as Batman tried to uncover who this Hush villain is. The characters are well defined and believable. The sequences with Catwoman are fantastic - I love how Catwoman and Batman interacts.

However, I've a problem with the ending. Even though the villain was revealed in the end, the motivation for going against Batman isn't, or is too weak for me to notice. Just because you're a bad guy and he's Batman means you've to go against him? So the story is great for me until the ending which I felt could be better.

Also check out Icons: The DC Comics & Wildstorm Art of Jim Lee if you can't get enough of the art.

Muscles in Motion: Figure Drawing for the Comic Book Artist
Muscles in Motion: Figure Drawing for the Comic Book Artist

I'm glad I borrowed this from the library because this book isn't worth the money.

All the figure drawing examples included are from some exercise videos. Not really a problem except that the drawings aren't very good. They are sketchy and the muscles aren't defined well enough. On some sketches, it's hard to make out the form of the muscles. It can get so bad that sometimes the front and back of a person is hard to differentiate.

The poses are pretty stiff and static as well. The examples are very limiting because they are just exercise poses.

This book seems like a personal practice sketchbook of the author Glenn Fabry, with notes to, perhaps, himself. There aren't much useful instructional text also.

Not recommended.

Pouring Light

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful, insightful, 25. Juli 2011
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Pouring Light (Taschenbuch)
Länge:: 1:10 Minuten

Jean Grastorf has a lovely style of watercolour that's characterized by beautiful undulating washes of radiant colours. A good example is the wall of the building on the book's cover art.

In this technique book, she shows how she does just that with some in depth tutorials.

The few chapters in the book covers a few areas. Chapter 1 covers the basic materials you need, just like most books. She uses the Da Vinci brand of watercolours. Chapter two is on the designing and composition. Chapter 3 is on understanding colour theory. Chapter 4 covers her techniques and the last chapter has her guided demonstrations.

The text is concise and packed with lots of drawing tips and techniques. It covers some basics but it really complements what you already know of watercolour. So this book is best for those already with some basic knowledge of watercolours.

Her style of painting involves literally pouring watercolours onto paper. She does that to create beautiful soft transitions of colours for her backgrounds or subjects. These colours when required, form the layer beneath for further glazing. She uses a lot of masking and glazing, sometimes applying up to 3 layers of mask.

As you can tell, her process is well planned and meticulous. It's a style that requires more preparation and patience than usual watercolour paintings.

The examples of her paintings in the book are gorgeous. I wish she would publish a separate art book just for that. There are also other artists whose paintings are used when talking about certain lesson points.

This is a very insightful and inspiring book. Highly recommended to watercolour lovers.

This is a clothed hardcover with 128 pages. An A4 size art print is included.

Moki's paintings are captivating. There's a strange allure in them that can hold your attention. Perhaps it's the fine art quality, maybe the optical illusions in some, or even the strange beings that live in her paintings.

The paintings have a theme of nature. There are landscapes carved suspiciously to resemble something but I just can't make out what they are. There are also animals, beautifully illustrated, some of then blending into the background like a camouflage.

The humans that appear are usually covered with blankets that seem to be made of nature itself, be it a ground canopy, granite floor, or even the surface of a running stream.

The couple of black and white paintings included are very different from her coloured ones. They are inhibited mainly by silhouettes of humans and unknown creatures. In one painting, there's this group of silhouettes carrying what seem like a river on their shoulders while walking across land.

Beautiful art book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Packed with marvelous art, 22. Juli 2011

This is a delightful book for Captain America and art book lovers.

The hardcover book comes with a slipcase of Captain America's iconic shield. It's a simple and striking design. On the back is the Hydra logo. When you pull out the book, you see a beautiful wall illustration with Captain America in World War II costume. Nice.

The 240 pages are packed with concept art on characters, environment, weapons and war machines. There are minimal film stills, a couple of old Captain America comic panels for the history, storyboards and the movie posters.

The character designs are wonderful. There's Captain America in various combat uniforms, with variations of leather jackets, straps and belts, helmets, new or war torn. And then there's the actual redesigned Captain America costumes, again in many variations. All look terrific.

The other characters included are Red Skull (Johann Schmidt), Howard Stark (Tony Starks dad), Peggy Carter (love interest), Howling Commandos (Captain America's field team) and a couple of other miscellaneous characters. Of particular mention would be the Hydra troopers. There are enough designs to make it look like a military fashion show.

The environment designs are a mixture of digital paintings and composites. Some are blown up slightly too big and look a bit blurry. Overall, they still look nice. Most of the set designs are quite dark in mood.

There's a huge section on weaponry. The various prototypes shields made by Howard Stark are interesting - one has a machine gun built in! Hydra weaponry is a huge part of this section. There are designs for huge tanks, mini tanks, Schmidt's Coupe, bombers, motorcycles, trains and submarines. The designs look sophisticated and classic at the same time. The Coupe's 3D model is very beautiful.

There are also accompanying artist commentary that explain the background.

This book is really packed. A highly recommended companion for the movie.

I got to know of this book from Book By Its Cover, which is the blog of the author Julia Rothman. I visit her blog regularly to check out lesser known art books. She does a great job featuring artists and their books.

Drawn In seems like an extension of the blog in a book format.

There are 44 artists featured in this book. Each comes with a profile, an interview and pages from their sketchbooks. There's a nice variety of wildly differing styles, all very unique and raw.

Most are doodles of imagination, some simple, some intricate, there are pages drawn with pencils and others created from mixed media.

It's interesting to see what these artists fill in their sketchbooks because you can never guess what's inside. Katy Horan draws dark spooky women, Rob Dunlavey seems to like to draw castles, Chad Kouri creates lettering, Ted McGrath's book is well worn with the many things pasted onto the pages.

I like the interviews that talk about how they use their sketchbooks, their various inspiration, and you can learn more about their personalities. With the exception of the author, the rest of the artists are all new to me.

Delightful book. More for those who like doodle-like imaginative drawings.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Clear and comprehensive resource, 15. Juli 2011
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Light for Visual Artists (Taschenbuch)
Länge:: 1:06 Minuten

This is a useful book authored by Richard Yot to help artists understand light.

It's 176 pages and is pretty comprehensive. The chapters are split into three categories. The first looks at the basic lighting fundamentals, which are the basic principles of light and shadows, their qualities, colours and how we perceive surfaces. The second looks at lighting with people and environment. The last looks at specific uses of lighting for staging and composition, setting mood and giving the illusion of time and place.

The text is clear and detailed. There are lots of photos, 3D computer generated images, a few drawn art, and some film stills in later chapters.

It's interesting to read about things we see daily and don't really think about why they look that way. Examples like why some wet surfaces are darker, how the colour of the sky changes throughout the day, finding the true colour of shadows.

It's not a tutorial book so you won't learn any techniques. It's a theory book that highlights those principles so that you can make use of them to create more realistic and believable work. The principles can be easily applied to other medium.

This is not the only book around on light. If you're more of a traditional artist, I recommend checking out James Gurney's Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter. Many of the topics are similar bot James Gurney's book added colour schemes and other subjects more useful to artists.

If you're into digital lighting, check out Jeremy Birn's Digital Lighting and Rendering (2nd Edition). I no longer have this book so I can't remember anything much except that it's also a very good book. Not sure about similar topics.

Kabuki Reflections (Oversized)
Kabuki Reflections (Oversized)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic book for fans and sketchbook lovers, 14. Juli 2011
Länge:: 1:26 Minuten

Of all the books that stood on the shelf, this one stood out because it's black. This book doesn't seem have a dust jacket although the product image on Amazon has it.

This book looks like a sketchbook because of the black cover. On the cover inscribes the Japanese kanji words "Kabuki", barely visible.

Inside's a collection of David Mack's sketches, paintings, sculptures and photos. Some of them on the Kabuki comic series, some on Daredevil, works for other comics and some sketches from life.

I like his watercolour style. It has the randomness of watercolour, yet well controlled to produce a beautiful portrait. Every piece has a textural feel to it from the watercolour splashes. Some are worked on canvas. Come to think of it, there aren't a lot of comic artists using watercolours.

David Mack seems to like collages. You'll see a few pages of collage with his drawings and photos. There's a very scrapbook feel to the book. There are photos of some of his hand made books, which he adapted into a collage style book made from his father's old hymn books. On some pages, he draws on a graph paper and sticks text balloons and straps of text using other paper.

Some of the photos included are of him drawing at events, snapshots of his paintings in progress, fans who have Kabuki tattoos.

There are lots to read, from the captions to dialogue of his random comic strips, and some fan letters.

This is a fantastic book for fans and sketchbook lovers. Every page is a pleasant surprise of style, drawings and ideas.

Watercolor Secrets is an extension of the Splash series of art books. It's the making-of book that showcases the various techniques of various Splash artists.

The book's a hardcover spiral bound with 144 pages. The beautiful cover art is from Fealing Lin.

The techniques featured are accompanied by step-by-step photos of paintings in different stages of completion, from start to finish. I always find myself wondering how those beautiful paintings are created. Well, this book is the answer. Each step is accompanied by detailed artist commentary. They are really generous with sharing ideas.

Besides the demonstrations, there are a few other pieces of stunning work included in each artist's gallery. The short artist biographies are nice and there are interesting photos of their workspace.

This is an inspiring and insightful book.

Recommended to intermediate and advanced watercolour artists. Beginners can also get the book to see the wonderful versatility of watercolour as a medium.
