PRO SQL SERV 7, (Professional)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic SQL Book, 29. Mai 2000
Rezension bezieht sich auf: PRO SQL SERV 7, (Professional) (Taschenbuch)
This book is somewhat of a rarity to me. Many of the other SQL books are, as you can well imagine, very boring. Rob Vieira does a great job making this book flow from subject to subject in such a way that it's almost a page turner. If you have any interest in SQL design (or admin), I'm sure you will find yourself reading this book much longer than originally intended. It is an excellent job.
Rob Vieira obviously has real world experience with SQL Server, and it shows between the covers of SQL Server 7 Programming. I'd suggest you read the book from cover to cover, all along the way picking up little tips and suggestions, remembering what you may have forgotten, and learning a whole lot of new tips and tricks that you never knew (or at least I didn't know about).
The book's title doesn't fairly represent the content in my opinion. This book covers almost everything about SQL 7 Server, from T-SQL basics through OLAP, tuning, replication (a great chapter), etc. If there is a "bible" for SQL 7 Server, this book is it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Coverage, 24. Januar 2000
I searched long and hard for a book covering the details of the ZAK and other methods that I could use to simply my administrative function. This book is it.
The full spectrum is covered here, from installations to security profiles, from Office suite control to remote registry edits. Each topic is covered in full.
This is another fine example of what a technical computer book SHOULD be from O'Reilly & Associates, Inc.
Trust me with one thing .... there isn't another book that will give you the depth of coverage that this book provides. I literally looked at 50 books before finding this gem.

Java in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))
Java in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))
von David Flanagan

5.0 von 5 Sternen I'm VERY impressed! He nailed it with the 3rd edition., 17. Dezember 1999
This book is my new favorite Java book. This book is probably my new favorite technical book. It's simply an excellent example of what a technical reference book should be.
The first quarter of the book is a very good introduction to Java, the syntax, as well as object oriented programming (OOP). The syntax and OOP portions of the book are the best I've seen in any book. If you are new to Java, reading through these sections carefully will teach you almost everything you'll need to know about the Java language. The third edition of the book doesn't assume a C/C++ background, so even those with limited or no programming experience will find this section very helpful.
Next you'll find excellent coverage of the Java platform. The bulk of the book is a reference of the different Java classes in JDK 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and even 1.3Beta. The coverage is excellent. I would have liked to see examples, but I suppose that really is asking too much from one book.
I have a large library of Java books, but this one is #1 for me. Shelf time for this book is going to be very low. The book literally hasn't seen a shelf since it arrived from Amazon.
There are several Java books I find to be far superior to others. For anyone new to the Java language, I believe the following are the very best books to have nearby (ranked in order): Java in a Nutshell, 3rd... Java Examples in a Nutshell... Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell... Java Enterprise in a Nutshell... The Java Class Libraries, 2nd, Vol 1. by Patrick Chan
Obviously, I'm a fan of David Flanagan's Java books (he wrote the top four). Pick one up to see why. They are all excellent, but my favorite is this one (JavaNut 3rd edition). The set of four Flanagan books easily comprise the best resource on Java available.

The Greatest Generation
The Greatest Generation
von Tom Brokaw

5.0 von 5 Sternen I'm a little ashamed after reading this one..., 4. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Greatest Generation (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Story after story, I was amazed at what took place, at what people did with their lives. The Greatest Generation is a perfect title to describe such a group of people.
I'm comparatively very young. I'm right in the middle of the so-called generation X. After reading this book, I realized that we owe much, so very, very much to our parents and grandparents.
I thought I knew history. I thought I knew what happened. I didn't. I only knew the historical details and facts, not personal stories. Now I know that the details and facts I learned in college don't amount to much at all, and no history lesson is going to ever teach you that. This book will.
I'm somewhat ashamed of my own generation, and I'm very honored to know a little more of a prior generation that deserves FAR more credit than we X'ers give them. This is an excellent book. This will force you to reconsider the value of your parents and grandparents, no matter how you think you already value them. I wonder what my generation will be called in 40-50 years. I doubt the word Greatest will be used, and least not in a positive light.
When you finish one story, you will either put away the book just to consider in amazement what you've just read, or you'll hasten to read another story, and then another, and then another. All are excellent!
Believe me - I'm not a big history fan, but I loved every square inch of this book. I treasure this book. I think everyone will.

5.0 von 5 Sternen SIX STARS! SEVEN STARS! It deserves MORE than 5!, 4. Dezember 1999
This is a great book. This book is a very quick read, and one that I'm sure you'll read again several times in your life. This is one of those books you'll keep in a special place, never to be sold at Half-Priced or loaned out.
This book will do one thing and do it very well: make you pause a moment and consider what is important. Everyone owes it to himself or herself to spend an hour or two and read this book.
WARNING: THIS BOOK CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
I can't give it a higher recommendation only because Amazon doesn't allow anything more than FIVE STARS.
When you are finished, I promise that you'll agree with me 100 percent. I didn't expect much from the book at first, but I was quickly drawn into it and then amazed by the mastery of the writing when I finally closed it.
This is the book that makes you want to read just ONE MORE chapter. Just ONE MORE chapter. It's EXCELLENT!

Java-How to Programm,3rd Edition (Prentice Hall (engl. Titel))
Java-How to Programm,3rd Edition (Prentice Hall (engl. Titel))
von Harvey M. Deitel
  Taschenbuch

3.0 von 5 Sternen You'll love it if you learn by examples..., 4. Dezember 1999
Okay, this book won't let you miss much. Every detail is covered IN DETAIL, but only to the intermediate stage. If you have no idea what OOP is, I suggest you get this book before any other. OOP (Object Oriented Programming) can be a little tough to understand, but this book's approach is very good.
The book is LARGE (dense) and looks like the typical goofy Deitel tutorial, but it's actually a pretty good book.
NOTE - If you already know C++, you'll probably want to skip this one. But if you currently know nothing, or you are a VB programmer, then this would be an excellent purchase.
This is my gripe and the reason for three stars. While the self-study answers are provided, the solutions for the real exercises are NOT provided and they will NOT provide them unless you have some kind of arrangement with Prentice Hill. That was a very annoying discovery. You can't purchase the answers and they aren't available online, don't ever bother.
If not for that BIG flaw, this is actually a very good introduction to Java, and the pace is very good for the beginner.
If you don't buy this one, my advice is to look at Thinking In Java, Java Examples in a Nutshell, Core Java 2.0, or Just Java 2.0. Those are all VERY GOOD books and worthy of serious consideration. In addition, the ANSWERS are PROVIDED in those books! What a concept! You'll actually know if you have it down well enough to move on. However, once again, THIS book probably has the best introduction to OOP that I've seen, so if you don't know it, consider buying this one.

Samba: Integrating Unix and Windows
Samba: Integrating Unix and Windows
von John D. Blair
  Taschenbuch

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent! It's EASIER than you THINK!, 4. Dezember 1999
Samba in a cinch. You pick up this book and within an hour you can have Samba running. There is really nothing to it. John Blair is a member of the Samba team, so he REALLY knows his stuff. He's also a remarkably good technical writer.
All the details are here, and the index is great. If you need something that this book doesn't cover, then you're way beyond me!
Have to setup Samba in a hurry? Overnight this book. The day you get it, flip through it for 10 minutes. Update the SMB.CONF file a bit. You're done - inside an hour - no question.
If you want to get fancy, this book covers that too. I haven't yet seen anything that wasn't in this book. In fact, I've found stuff that was in this book that I couldn't find ANYWHERE else.
Excellent book. Great to learn Samba. Great reference to keep handy afterward. Truly excellent book!

Running Linux

5.0 von 5 Sternen WONDERFUL LINUX BOOK!, 4. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: Running Linux (Taschenbuch)
Amazon - How can I give a book six stars? An exception should be made here.
This book is truly excellent. If you are just starting out, you'll learn enough here to be WELL on your way to being a Linux pro. Matt Welsh et al write wonderfully. Everything is explained in the clearest manner imaginable. No, the book doesn't cover everything, and I don't believe that is the intention of this book. This book is a superb introduction to Linux and a wonderful reference. If you go through the entire book, you'll easily be an advanced user of Linux. The best part is that this book explains it all so well, you'll find nothing is very difficult at all.
I've owned all three editions of this book. Each edition replaces the prior on the same location on the shelf - the closest shelf to my computer.
O'Reilly is truly an amazing book publisher. It's very uncommon to pick up one of their books and find even one error or lack of coverage. This book is NO EXCEPTION. O'Reilly makes a durable book with a clever binding called a RepKover. That's very important, something you'll discover after referring to O'Reilly books over & over & over again. These books are kept on the desktop or very nearby and used continuously.
This is a sure-fire winner! I doubt if Amazon ever sees one of these books show up as a return. It's truly among the very best computer books available today.

LINUX Unleashed, w. 2 CD-ROMs
LINUX Unleashed, w. 2 CD-ROMs
von Timothy Parker
  Taschenbuch

4.0 von 5 Sternen This is an Excellent Linux Reference, 4. Dezember 1999
Rezension bezieht sich auf: LINUX Unleashed, w. 2 CD-ROMs (Taschenbuch)
If you are somewhat lost with Linux, I highly recommend this book to you. While there is no book that can spell out every minute detail and every point of Linux, this book does a far better job than most.
I'd give it 5 stars, but the included software is not that great. I doubt anyone would actually use the CDROM anymore, but then, that's not really the value behind the book at all. Linux and almost all applications are free on the Internet anyway.
If you plan to run Linux, and you are having a tough time finding what you need to know at the Linux Documentation Project (LDP = NOT a well organized place), this book will certainly lead you in the proper directions. Once you have general knowledge of a given subject matter, then you can much more easily find additional information online. But remember, unless you can ask the right question, you'll never get the right answer.
If you are new to Linux, you will not regret buying this book. Download RedHat 6.1 from the Internet to have the latest release and forget the CDROM. However, don't feel that this book is in any way outdated. Most of the code of the programs you'll use on a day to day basis in Linux is already years old, and that's often based on software that is sometimes decades old. Sure, the code is updated, but the commands and command structure rarely change.
An excellent reference. CDROM should be updated, so think of this one as a shiny coaster. This is still a good purchase. Only the Linux pros should skip it... they already know their way around the confusing LDP. They already KNOW the RIGHT QUESTIONS.

Windows 98 Annoyances

5.0 von 5 Sternen An Excellent Update for Windows 98 Annoyances!, 4. Dezember 1999

Who thought Windows 98 was going to eliminate all the annoyances of Windows 95? Hardly. If anything, there are more annoyances with Windows 98 than ever before!
This is an excellent book. Think you know Windows 98? Read this book, and I think you'll discover more than you think. If Windows 98 is giving you fits, or you'd simply like to change a few things that just annoy you (who doesn't?), pick this one up. It's very simply an excellent reference tool for both Windows 98 users and anyone who administrates Windows 98 computers.
Fortunately, this book should be good for both the novice and the professionals. However, if you are a novice, just make sure you understand the instructions that are carefully laid out in the book. There is nothing at all complicated, but there are many examples of simple registry changes that could be bad news if you just rip through it. Take it line by line (few examples have more than 5-6 simple steps), and you'll have no trouble at all.
