Real Boys: Rescuing Our Sons from the Myths of Boyhood
Real Boys: Rescuing Our Sons from the Myths of Boyhood
von William S. Pollack
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 18,52

4.0 von 5 Sternen Keeping our boys together, 11. Juni 2000
This book is very informative and valuable. A five star book except that it is too long or not as organized as it could be. Thus, the content becomes repetitive. The author explains the societal expectations of our boys and appropriately labels this condition as the "boy code." With a son and daughter of my own, I will certainly support the author's belief that the boy code is alive and well. And, the cultural expectations we have for our boys is inconsistent with what we expect from them as men. The author details this dilemma and provides many experiences he has had working with boys. You should read and learn how to help your son be aware of this code and help him live within it. Also, the author implores parents to revise this code mostly by working with and influencing those adults such as teachers who influence our sons. Without the parents help, the author explains the near impossible task we expect from our sons when we ask them to transform from thick-skinned unfeeling boys to sensitive men. The author reminds the reader that what a mother expects from her son and what she expects from the man in her life provides the clue as to what is wrong. But, mothers are not to blame. Men are the major influence in passing the code along from one generation to the next. Fathers need to take a good look at the boy code and realize that it needs some tweaking so that our sons can manage better. The author explains this very well. It is worth getting a copy of this book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen For all parents with children of all ages, 20. Mai 2000
Gavin de Becker writes an eye opening book about how parents need to be more involved in the safety of their children. I have always considered myself a diligent parent. But the author's blueprints for checking the depth of the water or checking for a clearly marked path through the woods taught me several lessons. Relying on intuition is a major theme here. But, the author reminds the parent to inquire more about what our children are doing and where they are heading. This includes becoming very acquainted with the parents of the children your kids become involved with. Only then can one's intuition provide the knowledge to make the right choices. Gavin de Becker reminds us to leave nothing to chance. Before you let your loved one visit or stay over a friend's house have you asked their parents about their policy on supervision, your child's access to you if a situation to them does not seem right, or their policy on guns for that matter. This is just one example of an uninformed state we may rely on in contrast to trusting our intuition or concerns. Woman protecting their children is covered so adeptly in this book with emphasis on a woman's innate ability to viciously defend her children when threatened. Gavin de Becker asks woman to generalize this ability to self-defense as well. But, all parents will benefit from reading this book. Again, many blueprints are provided by the author to guide the parent through the proper methods to insure our children's safety. The age of your children should not influence your decision to purchase this book since the author highlights the different set of threats to our teenagers as well. This well written book is a must-have for all parents with children of all ages.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Fibromyalgia: The Revolutionary Treatment That Can Reverse the Disease
What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM): Fibromyalgia: The Revolutionary Treatment That Can Reverse the Disease
von R. Paul St. Amand
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 21,01

5.0 von 5 Sternen Let's get well again!, 6. Mai 2000
Dr. R. Paul St. Amand and Claudia Craig Marek have gained the admiration of many who have suffered from the so misunderstood disorders of Fibromyalgia and Myofascial pain. I will not begin to say how long and how much I went through before finding a doctor who prescribes to Dr. R. Paul St. Amand's scientific protocol. It is a great benefit, and so much more effective than the popular treatments of medication, surgery and physical therapy. Of course, PT is the best of these frustrating treatments. The authors have more experience here then any author I know treating this disorder. Even the most popular author for books on Fibromyalgia, Devin Starlanyl who steadfastly holds onto confounding beliefs for the cause of Fibromyalgia and the methods to cope with it, will not stray from Amand's protocol. This book will give chronic pain sufferers a legitimate cause for this disorder and more importantly a treatment that works. Anyone who has suffered from chronic fatigue and chronic pain while also ignoring some of their other less disturbing physical disorders will be awakened to the root of their problems. This book will give you all the resources you need. It has a good format, is good reading, and is well-written. Please read and learn how to shed years of pain and frustration.

Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection
Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection
von John E. Sarno
  Taschenbuch
Preis: EUR 15,32

4.0 von 5 Sternen good for some, but not all., 22. April 2000
Dr. Sarno offers some good technique and theory about reducing tension related to stress, an invaluable tool for anyone suffering from chronic pain. I read this book about a year ago and adopted his ideas. His shortcoming and liability, however, are his aversion to address underlying physical disorders which are more likely the cause of long lasting chronic pain. Of course, he adds the disclaimer that anyone suffering from any one of the numerous disorders he says may be the result of TMS should be consulting their physician. I would additionally warn that anyone suffering from a cluster of disorders that Sarno calls equivalents of TMS should actively be looking for the physical cause while using Sarno's stress reduction techniques. Mistakenly, Sarno goes so far as to call overwhelming disorders such as Fibromyalgia or Myofascial Pain Syndrome, "TMS," Ouch! Certainly, people can benefit from Sarno's book, as well as other stress reduction techniques, especially for isolated pain. But, there is a real danger in suggesting that someone suffering from an array of disorders and years of spreading pain ignore physical basis other than Sarno's explanation of oxygen depravation. Also, there is inconsistency in the idea that a mind could create a greater physical pain that would threaten one's ability to work just so that one would not have to face the reality that one did not like the way their boss was treating them. Nothing like the pain of disability to avoid a confrontation with management! Anyone suffering from an array of disorders Sarno coyly suggests may be TMS would do good to take a good look at their medical history and all ailments dealt with. Many who suffer from the array of symptoms that Sarno suggests as having only a psychological basis actively need to research the latest data on Fibromyalgia and Myofascial pain. A good starting point would be looking at work done by Dr. Paul ST. Amand and other experts working with the array of disorders Sarno calls TMS. ........ can offer some valuable help and medical treatment in avoiding the long term disabling effects of those disorders. The cases of individuals experiencing spreading pain and numerous disorders, Dr. Sarno needs to reconsider since his advise is one of medical exclusion. A difficult task for him this must be, since most doctors have iron egos. For, those who have suffered so long, I hope this review helps.
