Wait For Me!: Memoirs of the Youngest Mitford Sister

5.0 von 5 Sternen Just plain enjoyable, 7. Juni 2012

I recently watched a few episodes of a BBC series on Chatsworth (also recommended) and found myself interested enough to order this book. How lucky to read this autobiography - what a long and interesting life. I had read some of Nancy Mitford's books 20 or more years ago, but not pursued more knowledge of her family. I felt in reading this book that I could have just been listening while the Dowager Duchess told her story. Lacking in "sensation", it was nevertheless packed with such interesting details and description of such characters in her family and circle of friends. How many people live such long and full lives - and share with us so much of it with us - her readers? It fills out sometimes otherwise dry histories of the period. I smiled at times and sighed at others - and especially appreciated that she knows what a life she has led.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good for after a break ..., 7. Juni 2012

After "burning out" a bit on the series, I ordered this book to see whether I was ready for more Fidelma. As it took place out of the series' time sequence, thought it would be a good choice. Although maybe not as outstanding as some of her other adventures, I enjoyed it thoroughly. As with every series, there is a danger of it becoming stale. I had gotten a little tired of re-reading the whole legal/religious background that is part of every Fidelma story. For those who read books out of sequence, such repitition is fine - but I had gotten tired of it. Perhaps now I am ready to return to catch up on the last 2 or 3 books. After all, Fidelma has provided much reading pleasure over the past several years.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Well, 3, 4 or 5 stars? Good question., 7. Juni 2012
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I won't go into plot details, as those are nicely summarized elsewhere. I still can't figure out whether I loved this book or not. I read about half and then set aside. I picked it up a week later and started where I left off, but realized I'd already forgotten key points about characters and plot, so I started over. Normally I love getting into a new series, but here I am not so certain - although the book was fun to read and promises interesting adventures going forward. It has all the ingredients to provide good entertainment and is different enough from run of the mill fantasy or detective stories to follow - but it just didn't grab me. Maybe it is because I am not such a big paranormal fan - loved Tolkien's books and perhaps some of Anne Rice - but vampires leave me cold. Think I will put it on my "maybe list" or check it out of the library.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Charming entertainment, 2. Dezember 2011
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I finally broke down and ordered this book, as it kept appearing on my amazon recommendation pages. I found it quite entertaining --- loved the characters names to start with! It had a kind of old fashioned charm - harking back to times earlier which I found appealing. The humor was wonderfully dry as well. The mystery was interesting, although did not seem to be the main point of the book. Despite being about murder and theft, I found it good clean fun. Will order the next book to keep with Flavia.

As a mystery fan, I am always looking for new series to enjoy. Bought this first in a series to see if it would join Martha Grimes, J.A. Jance, Alex Gray and Deborah Crombie on my list of must reads. Will definitely be ordering the second of the series, set in North Carolina ... a far cry from many English mysteries I love. The "feeling" of the story had something almost nostaglic about it - far from goody-two-shoes, but not filled with tormented detectives more involved in their own messed up lives than in solving crimes. Deborah Knott, the bootlegger's daughter, is someone you'd like to know with a bevy of friends, relatives and colleagues who will no doubt pop up in future stories.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Not her best, but come on ... it is still Richard Jury, 25. August 2011
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
I assigned this a 4 start rating, as I quite enjoyed the book. Having said that, if I hadn't read Grimes previous books, I am not sure I would have rated it so highly. Richard Jury remains one of my favorite figures in mysteries, along with his friend, Melrose Plant. The book was perhaps not as tightly plotted or as thrilling a mystery as some of her earlier stories, but still enjoyable. Her inclusion of the side story of Morris, the black cat of The Black Cat, and Mungo, Harry Johnson's dog, was a little weird ... how many books include a silent diaglogue between pets? As to Harry Johnson, Jury's "nemisis" and quite the story teller... I wonder when, if ever, Jury will be able to pin some crime on him. There are other unresolved issues - such as Lu Aguilar (fellow police officer and flame of Jury) and her lying in a coma. All the more reason to continue reading Grime's Jury stories.
