5.0 von 5 Sternen The best Gaiman novel since ..., 2. November 2013

... a long time. Probably Stardust or Coraline, I'd say.

There have been quite a few books since then that I liked; after all most of them are similar in their mixing "reality" with "legends" in a way that can be seen as Gaiman's fingerprint or trademark. This one is no different, but, maybe because it is more of a novella, it's more focused than for example American Gods. Additionally it manages to invoke southern England in a way that none of Gaiman's other books have managed with their respective settings.

It is, really, a must read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Probably the greatest campaign ever written, 2. November 2013
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The original Enemy Within campaign for sure has an almost legendary status among the older generation of role players. At a time when the usual adventure was a Munchkin-style dungeon crawl, it was a series of linked highly demanding stories with high ratio of pure role-playing that really transported the feeling of uneasiness that is fitting for an Old World setting. I've seen it adapted to different settings - high fantasy, horror, scifi - and still it managed to be convincing and captivating.

This new edition even expands these qualities by updating the setting and storyline while keeping all the elements that made it unique.

Be sure though, that for the campaign to really work, the GM will have to be quite experiencend and to invest quite some additional work in getting the Old World alive. The adventure settings oftentimes lack any descriptions for anything not directly related to the story and usually these gaps are exactly where the players will go to; and the "soft facts" are missing entirely. As I was playing with a group new to Warhammer filling in these white gaps was quite important, so I'll attempt some cross-marketing here: Ian Mortimer's "Time-Traveller's Guide to Medieval England", while not exactly matching an Old World setting, did deliver some very helpful templates for the cities and country-side of the Reik.

... if, as is often the case with Gaiman's children's books, with a slightly unclear audience. Writing style and presentation suggest an early reader, but the contents - it is a time-traveling adventure with dinosaurs, pirates and aliens, after all - might be more adequate for a ten year old.

Still, a very creative story, that stands out from the usual and therefore definitely worth a try.

The Earth Dwellers: Adventures in the Land of Ants

4.0 von 5 Sternen Nice introduction to the world of ants, 28. Juli 2012
I bought this book in Costa Rica's La Selva reservation where the story told starts out, so I'm obviously a little biased. Still, it is a really nice introductory book on mymecology for the layman. Following the lifecycle of different species of ant in narrative form does remind of the style of TV documentaries and to me felt rather fresh in book form.
The parts on myrmecologists Ed Wilson and Bert Hölldobler to me seemed a worthy addition, broadening the view and adding depth to the information given.

Definitely not a book for an expert, since its lacking in detail, but a really nice starting point.

Januar 2010

This is easily the best book I've read in a long time, easily topping Stroud's Bartimaeus (which was an excellent book, well trilogy) as well asthose of other contemporary authors of the genre (and there are quite a few really good ones).
I just can imagine what a it must be like to read this book as a "Young Adult": gripping, at times a bit scary, reminicent of the fairy tales you've been told a few years earlier, but a coming of age story that rings true just the same. And above all: a pleasure from the first word to the last page. The only low probably being that after reading the whole night under your sheets, your already done. Oh, to be that young again...

Rezension bezieht sich auf: The Good Fairies of New York (Taschenbuch)
Placing fairies, gods and other creatures of legend in a modern world and then seeing what happens by now can be seen as a fairly established concept of modern Fantasy literature; this is another installment - actually a fairly early one, being first published somewhere around 1991, as far as I know. Alas, it isn't a really good one, too.

While the story is well imagined, it tends to be sketchily told, compressing crucial plot elements into just a few sentences, or not expanding on twists that would surely have been fun if told in more detail. Instead Millar concentrated on the rather "punky" behaviour of his protagonists, which was of rather less interest at least for me.

All in all it's a nice read, but there are far better works around.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good, but not as well as it's predecessors, 21. August 2006
Verifizierter Kauf(Was ist das?)
The prequels of this book definitively have been page-turners of the "I might miss something, if I don't read on, the story is just so fast paced" kind, so Martin had to live up to the highest expectations. Well, he didn't quite make it.

"Feast for Crows" is one of those "in between" books. Martin knots a few (well many, actually) loose ends before a timeshift of some years planned to occur between the fifth (A Dance with Dragons) and sixth (The Winds of Winter) installment of the series, if rumors are correct. Doing this, Martin slows the pace quite a bit. He weakens his grip on his technique of subjective story-telling by introducing one shots. There are even a few (minor) blunders in his writing and prologue and epilogue, especially, feel like they have been added without any revision.

Still, it's a gripping work. The continued storylines of Jamie, Cersei, Arya are definitely worth reading. Even Sansa finally makes it from totally dumb damsel to ... hmmm, let's call it ... not completely dumb damsel. And the dornish storyline adds quite a bit of nice flavor, too.
