The Great Lakes Region in Central Africa with its vast endowment of natural resources is one of the richest regions in the world. During the last decades through massive crimes against humanity in Burundi, war and genocide in 1994 in Rwanda and long lasting wars in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, several million people were murdered and millions of people displaced. Rape is used as an important war strategy. With an interdisciplinary and holistic approach, thirty internationally renowned scientists and highly profiled members of civil society analyse the causes of these conflicts and discuss ways to contribute to peace building and democratisation. The role of international and local actors, the aims of organisations promoting human rights and of associations of women, youth and survivors were discussed. Overarching questions are: how to cope with the past, coming to justice, how to overcome trauma and ethnic stigmatisation, and how to contribute to the healing and reconciliation process. La Région des Grands Lacs en Afrique centrale est dotée en ressources naturelles qui en font une des régions des plus riches du monde. Durant des décennies, dus aux crimes contre l’humanité au Burundi, à la guerre et au génocide 1994 au Rwanda et aux incessantes guerres en République Démocratique du Congo, plusieurs millions de personnes ont été tués et de nombreux déplacés. Le viol est une arme stratégique de ces guerres. Par une approche multidisciplinaire et holistique, une trentaine de scientifiques internationalement renommés et d’éminents membres de la société civile analysent les causes des conflits et recherchent des perspectives pour la promotion de la paix et la démocratisation. Le rôle des acteurs internationaux et locaux, les buts des organisations des Droits de la Personne, des femmes, des jeunes et des survivants sont débattus. Le grand défi est : comment gérer le passé et rendre justice, comment surmonter la traumatisation et la stigmatisation « ethnique », comment contribuer aux processus de guérison et de réconciliation.
