I'd love to know what readers enjoy reading in English. Is there a particular genre that is popular?

I posted in meet Our Authors. I enjoy reading the posts here to find out what readers in Germany have on their shelves.

Hi, The Green One (aka Darcyclover).

thank You so much for posting the Spam sketch.
There is an other fount for the origin of Spam: S hort A nnoying P ointless M essage :))
In my last Langenscheidt Euro Dictionary is written: to spam = zumuellen (mit e-mails)

Best wishes and a nice Roses Monday

miki

PS I love Fruehstuecksfleisch!

Green One, you have to stop posting things I want to post *pout*. I just spent the last couple of minutes watching the Monty Python sketch again while you posted the link. You know how slow I am. ;-)

We could start calling spam "Frühstücksfleisch" (breakfast meat) which according to dict.cc is the German word for the supposedly edible kind of spam that comes in tins.

"Diese Frühstücksfleischerei hier ist ja schrecklich. Das ganze Forum wird von Frühstücksfleisch überschwemmt. Ich habe dieses Frühstücksfleisch wirklich satt. Der Autor hast schon wieder gefrühstücksfleischt (oder Frühstück gefleischt?). Das Forum wird komplett zu gefrühstücksfleischt."

Anyway, I really think the Monty Python sketch would be even more absurd in a German version where everybody says Frühstücksfleisch instead of spam (which is of course impossible since I dare you all to try to say Frühstücksfleisch 5 times in a row without making a mistake. After having written it a couple of times, I am convinced that it must be one of the most ridiculous German words ever.)

Tedesca,
in this I just have to set you right. Spam is indeed Spam, even in German. We just took the word for us, too. Like Computer or Touchpad or just like Americans use Rucksack or Kindergarten or Zeitgeist.

And the Monty Python sketch is legendary. Spam is just EVERYWHERE!!! There's no escape!

Stricktly OFF TOPIC

Oh, yes,
I enjoyed the reading very much!
Yesterday I devoured the short story, too, but it's waaaayyyy toooo short!
Write a bit more about the guy...
I will buy it everyday!

Guten Tag, Miki! I hope you enjoyed the trilogy as much as I enjoyed writing it! I'm only passing through here, my German isn't good enough to hold a conversation. And my Italian is non-existent! :-)

Ha ha. I'm a writer so I have an ok grasp of synonyms! I was trying to point out the inadequacies of Google Translate, not promoting its virtues. Sorry if that didn't come across.

Obviously you've never heard of multiple meanings and synonyms... And GOOGLE is the last source for correct translations, believe me.

And no, I didn't know.

That's funny! I ran "unerwünschte Mitteilung" through Google translate German to English and it came out as "unwanted release".

I ran "spam' through English to German and it came out as "spam".

Did you know that "spam' as a description of something unwanted goes back to an old Monty Python comedy sketch?

Spam ist auf Deutsch eine "unerwünschte Mitteilung", das trifft den Nagel exakt auf den Kopf!

I have a book in German. But I'm not going to tell you what it is! Spamming is wrong. Very wrong. Out of interest, what is the German word for spam?

Amazing.
Not Joseph Conrad, maybe, but still ...

I agree that language shapes our view on the world. Something probably only immigrantsfully grasp.

Joseph Conrad! It can be done and done masterfully. Still, I think you should write in the language your heart sings. One of the things I have learned about living in a foreign country is that my connection to my language is an energy that dictates my entire understanding of the world. I know two words for "funny" in German: witzig and lustig, but I do not understand how their connotations differ, but I know intimately how ridiculous is different from hilarious and how "funny" can mean weird as well as laugh-inducing.

I can relate to that - I don't know if I will ever feel secure enough about English go actually attempt writing a publishable text in this language.

I am in awe of writers who write novels in languages different from their mother tongue.

OK. Fortunately, I read this before trying to participate in the forums with a view toward participating fully while quietly slipping in the title of my book, but I do completely agree with you and would find everything you have mentioned annoying. Especially the part about bad German. After living here for ten years, I can speak the language reasonably well but I still cannot write a complete sentence correctly.

Don't waste your breath on explaining, guys. The problem isn't that they don't understand, but that they just don't care.

*facepalm*

Mr. Robert Lidster, how is your book connected to this thread? It does not seem to be about spam. Perhaps it is about authors not getting the message? If not, I have to tell you that your post fits my definition of spam perfectly. Nice example, well done.

Are you aware that you didnt even provide the slightest hint of what your book is about? Thats pure spam, and doing it in this thread ... kudos for that kind of chuzpe.
