This novel is very apropos, this being the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic…. I was captivated from the very first page, so much so that I neglected chores, cleaning and even cooking!! Mr. Thompson is a gifted storyteller! The dialogues were stimulating and thought provoking… it definitely kept my interest and enjoyment throughout … a quick read! A Short Story based on the poem - Unspoken Love During the Vietnam War (English Edition)

FREE MAY 2, 3,
Short story in English

This is the story you ask for and hopefully I provided.

In 1975, I wrote a poem and posted it recently on Amazon. It had a great response but mostly from people that said they wished it were a story, that poetry sucks.

Well, for me the poetry is where the emotion was but to attempt to please, I have "tried" to write it into a story. The issue is will it maintain the emotion needed to understand the incident that happened.

Now the poem was hidden away for 37 years.

At that time there were no avenues for anything that referred to same sex love. It was written as a catharsis for an English class but was rejected by the professor.

This is the story based on the original poem of disaster on a Navy ship, and the display of spiritual love of one man for another.

It is being told by myself. It is what I saw.

About Karl May...
I grew up in Germany and I read Karl May. Since then and many years ago I moved to the USA and I wonder now wether Karl May's books have been translated into English? - I certainly am sorry to say that my children grew up without having read any of May's books.

Hello Aaron, und willkommen. Great to see your response. Like you, I also grew up with Karl May books. When my family moved to Canada in 1967, it was a way for me to keep up my German. Many years later I ended up translating several Karl May books into English. Taking 'Die Liebe des Ulanen', I worked it into 'The Hussar's Love. The first one is called: The Prussian Lieutenant. Check it out.

Hello, Robert Stermscheg
Thanks for your response. Can you tell me what prerequisits exist to tranlate a book from English into German ? As the translater, do you need to deal with copyrights, do you need the author's permission, and/or what specific qualifications would a (living) author look for in finding a translater? For some reason I would think that in specific cases the quality of a tranlation is measured more on the author's INTENT than the literal translation of his writings.
And also, how is the translater compensated for his work?

@Aaron. Good question. The most obvious response is that you (translator) have a grasp and good understanding of both languages. I've run into a number of people who claimed they were bi-lingual, only to see them sputter when I've tried to converse with them in the other language. And you're right, the translator has to have a 'feel' for the text, being aware of the style, spirit and nuances used by the original author. Then there's a third component, easily overlooked: desire or passion. It's a long haul. It took me over one year from start to finish, including revisions and editing to complete one book(150,000 words).
In terms of Karl May translations, there's a great society in Germany, the Karl May Gesellschaft (KMG), which has obtained and reworked the original (German)manuscripts and made them available on the internet. Copyright typically expires 50 years after an author's death. In May's case, that would have occurred after 1962.
For some reason, the current German publishers, Karl May Verlag, have resisted hiring anyone to translate his works into the English language. This would explain why a number of independents, like myself, have emerged over the years. Naturally, we foot the up-front costs, hoping to be compensated later. But most of us do it for the love of the work; the monetary reward is far down the road.
Happy reading.

Robert Stermscheg, thanks for your interesting comments.

In 2006 I wrote an autobiography which drew nine five-star reviews. However, only recently my book also drew some heavy-duty trashing by an individual with an obvously political agenda. To counter this certain attacker's volumous jottings I weighed in personally under the Aaron handle. Take a look. http://www.amazon.com/Cant-Forget-Journey-Through-Germany/dp/141965070X/ref=pd_sim_b_6

Unrelated/aside from these issues, I have had several offers to translate the book into German, hence my questions on the subject. Since then also one approach from Poland, a historian who asked my permission to use some of the pictures in my book (of the town I lived in during WWII) for the publication of his own book, which has gone on the market since, and of which he sent me a few gift copies.

If you're interested in an exciting read take a look at my thriller Trip Wire. It offers a little of everything, Intrigue, Mystery, Murder, and Mayhem. Toss in the Vatican, the Mafia, and some memorable characters and you have an enjoyable read.

Petra Wagner, a professional photographer, learns of a secret that has been in her family for generations. Skeptical and unable to forget the story, revealed to her by her mother, she visits a grave site at secluded monastery in Germany. Her visit sets off a trip wire in Rome.

The von Hompesch family has been on a Vatican Watch List since 1842 when Ferdinand von Hompesch died at the monastery. Ferdinand, the last Grandmaster of the Knights of Malta, before the French, under Napoleon Bonaparte banished the Knights from the island in 1798, was a distant relative.

It was rumored that he was in possession of a priceless relic and may have hidden it on the island before he departed. The Vatican's Cardinal Matteotti learns that Petra is on a photo assignment in Italy and her brother Peter is vacationing on Malta. He dispatches a young priest to Italy to follow Petra, and Fra Guiseppe, one of their problem-solvers, to keep track of Peter.

After completing the photo shoot, Petra travels to Trieste, in search of clues. Peter's boss had him carry a set of blueprints to Malta, for an unsavory associate, Carlo. Peter soon finds himself an unwitting target of local criminals. Guiseppe is under extreme pressure from Cardinal Matteotti, to discover what Peter is doing on the island. The laity engaged by a local priest to keep tabs on Peter are ineffectual and Guiseppe reluctantly enlists the assistance of the underworld in Rome to keep track of him.

The present day Knights of Malta, headquartered in Rome, learn of the church's interest in Peter, and sends two of its clandestine members to discover why.

Petra flies to Malta and shares the family secret with her brother and enlists his help in the search. Their quest leads them from one clue to another as those watching them make their way through a tangled web of intrigue and danger.

Trip Wire was originally published under the title `Watch List'.

Trip Wire is over 70,000 words long.

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself to the readers in Germany. I grew up near Stuttgart and am very excited to be published in my Heimatland!

I have published one novel, called Irretrievably Broken. This is the story of a German immigrant family. When 12-year-old Bettina joins her aunt and grandmother in Seattle after her mother's death in Germany, she becomes the catalyst for the women to reveal secrets they have never talked about in their lives.

In addition I just published the first in a series of short stories about death. Cigarette Break (The Angel of Death) is now available for free download on Kindle through May 8. C.J. and Crystal seem to be a typical young couple vacationing with their three small children. If it were not for the fact that C.J. suffers from PTSD. He's an American soldier, on leave after three tours of duty in Iraq and with orders to deploy to Afghanistan. When they cross the border into Canada, C.J. says he'd rather kill himself than go back. The family stops at a remote B & B where they're the only guests. Crystal decides it's an idyllic place for the kids. For C.J. it's the place where he plots his suicide. What happens when he decides he can't leave her behind?

Eine Bewertung von einem deutschen Leser waere prima! Vielen Dank!
