Affairs of State FREE on 17th May is AFFAIRS OF STATE - a dystopian novel by Alexis Scott. The United Kingdom has long been broken up after Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland gained their independence. New England is no longer in the European Union and the death penalty has been reintroduced. The family, like the monarchy, has long been abolished and children (created by stratified random sampling) are born extra utero and raised in institutions. When Indigo Violet is sentenced to death for the crime of voluntary pregnancy lawyer Delectus Tarquinus decides it is time to act. Julia Sacriligia, senior esteemed judge, is an unlikely ally.
Set at the close of the twenty first century and the beginning of the twenty second, 'Affairs of State' focuses on the changing nature of relationships and their dependence on social institutions, exploring sexual boundaries and the expression of desire in different social landscapes. Last, but not least, "Affairs of State" is a story about love and its eternal and unchanging nature.
A light take on a serious subject as well as a highly topical one.
Alexis Scott's first book 'Eating Wolves' was published by Dewi Lewis in 2003 and praised by John Carey in The Sunday Times in October 2003:('I prefer the novels that aren't on my Booker shortlist'). She has since self-published several e-books including popular crime novel 'Deaconsbank'.

Hidden Histories Free Sunday 25 May HIDDEN HISTORIES is a historical/family saga spanning four generations of women and almost eighty years, set in Ireland, Scotland and England. It is a story of loss: of the separation of mothers from their children and of the bonds between them. It is also about the impact of political and historic forces on ordinary lives, the interdependence of past and present, exploring how identity is transmitted from one generation to the next.
The story begins with cousins Margaret and Tillie, Protestants from Belfast, in 1916. Margaret - a mill girl - is pregnant when she marries and goes off to live in Scotland with her new husband - a Lanarkshire miner. Tillie - a qualified nurse - goes away to join the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) during the First World War and then marries and settles in London. While the cousins exchange letters their lives could scarcely be more different...
Alexis Scott was born in Derry, N. Ireland. She has lived almost all her adult life in Scotland. She trained as a solicitor and has worked in many different jobs. She has written all her life. Cuisine Americaine FREE Sunday 1st JUNE. Cuisine Americaine is the story of five people who meet on a writer's retreat in France. Germaine is in her mid fifties and is the caretaker for whom the retreat is a roof over her head. Helmut, thirty-something, is a Swedish detective writer, only partly successful, whose agent is encouraging him to broaden the scope of his detective fiction. He has come on the retreat to get away from a stressful family life. Arthur, originally from France but living in Germany, is a poet who has been married three times. Now in his forties, is in straightened financial circumstances, he is looking for a woman to help him out. Svetlana, a poet from Ukraine, is, at eighteen, the youngest. Svetlana is fed up with her life back home and is seeking adventure as well as fame and fortune. Katherine is from Scotland and in her early fifties. She dreams of being a writer and settling in France. When the five head to Paris for a break one of their number disappears. As the remaining four begin their search for the missing they all begin to suspect one another by turns and each is forced to reveal rather more about themselves and their dubious pasts than they intended.
A year later the writers return to the retreat for a reunion when, again, the unexpected happens and all again are under suspicion.
A tale with lots of twists, `Cuisine Americaine' is a humourous take on the mystery novel. It is also a more serious examination of the disparate motives of friends and the development of friendship and its converse - enmity. Cuisine Americaine is FREE Sunday 1st JUNE only.
Born in Derry, N. Ireland. Spent almost all her adult life in Scotland. Universities: Stirling (Sociology and Social Administration), Strathclyde (Law) and Edinburgh (Diploma in Legal Practice). Tough Times Tough Times is a black comedy about life on the edge. Written mostly in (west of Scotland) Scots and broad Belfast-speak and set in a dreary town somewhere in the west of Scotland in the very early years of the twenty first century it tells the story of six residents in a hostel for the homeless and of Rosie (ma Johnson), ex Bed and Breakfast owner turned hostel manager.
Tracy is nearing seventeen and pregnant. Martin, seventeen, suffers from epilepsy and, like Tracy, has spent much of his life in residential care. Pete has AIDS, Belinda is anorexic/bulimic. Brendan has fled from Belfast after an attempt on his life. Carol (Mrs Forsyth) - is a battered wife whose death, following a brief stay at the hostel impinges dramatically on the lives of the other residents.
Rosie has turned to drink to relieve the stress of having narrowly escaped prosecution after some of her guests in the B&B become ill with E-coli 157. To begin with she has little fondness for the hostel residents, viewing them as `the dregs'. However, she gradually gets to know them and realises her circumstances are not so different from those of the young people she has looked down on.
Tough Times illustrates that, in the midst of death there is life, that life is not just about survival but about a shared humanity and sense of purpose.

David McGowan meint:
Hey everyone!

To celebrate the release of my new novel, From The Sky, on Monday 15th September, my debut novel, The Hunter Inside, is free from today until Monday.

Here's the blurb:

You can lock your windows and your doors, but you cannot lock your mind from The Hunter Inside.

Paul Wayans and Bill Arnold have something in common. They are being stalked by a vicious killer.

Sandy Myers, rushing from home with her 7 year-old twins in tow, grabs a letter from the mailbox. It is addressed to Sandy Carson. Her maiden name. Contained within the plain manila envelope is a photograph. A photograph of a corpse.

The past has caught up with them, and now their lives are in jeopardy. A monster more fearsome than any the world has ever seen is hunting them, bringing with it echoes from the past and threatening the future of civilisation.

Should they run, or should they stand and fight?

FBI Special Agent Sam O'Neill will fight desperately to solve a case that he could not solve ten years before. Then, he had no clues as to the identity of the vicious killer. This time, it's different.

But can he find them before it's too late? And if he does not, will ANYONE survive?

The Hunter Inside is a psychological thriller with a twist. It is a page-turning roller-coaster of a novel that you won't be able to put down until all of its secrets, twists and turns have been revealed. Packed full of gruesome murders, fear and suspense, it harbors a monster so fearsome it will give you nightmares.

Shimasou is here -- and no-one is safe.

Get it at www.amazon.com/The-Hunter-Inside-ebook/dp/B0082KLJO6 or search for it on your local Amazon.

Enjoy!
