Deaconsbank One day only, 31/07/13 When Moira Forrest - a writer of romantic fiction - is found dead from a stab wound in Patsy McCutcheon's garden in Glasgow's southern suburbs Detective Inspector Sarah MacLeod and her side-kick Hearst are allocated the task of investigating the murder. Sarah - born and raised on the Isle of Harris and in the Wee Free Church - finds the neighbours to be quite alienated from the police and the law as well as each other. Living a privatised existence there is no love lost between the Martins, the Hewitts and the Bensons and it is not just the (initial) prime suspect who is found to be telling a tissue of lies to the police.
Set in the very early years of the New Millennium Sarah MacLeod finds herself embarking on a journey of personal discovery as well as the search for the Deaconsbank murderer. Meanwhile, on the other side of the fence, defence solicitor Maria Jannetta is about to embark on a personal journey of her own.
Born in Derry, N. Ireland. Spent almost all her adult life in Scotland. Universities: Stirling (Sociology and Social Administration), Strathclyde (Law) and Edinburgh (Diploma in Legal Practice). Jobs have included social research, welfare rights, money advice. Trained and qualified as a solicitor. Lived in Derry, Stirling, London, Dundee, Glasgow, Peterborough, Livingston and Kirkcaldy. Shortlisted for inaugural Dundee Book Prize 2000 with unpublished 'Whitfield Times'. She has contributed to SCOLAG - the Journal of the Scottish Legal Action Group, the Times Educational Supplement Scotland, Mslexia, The Stinging Fly (Dublin's Literary magazine),'The Dynamics of Balsa' (New Writing Scotland 2007) and 'True Cat Tales (2010).
Praise for 'Eating Wolves':
'Extremely readable' (John Carey, The Sunday Times)
'As satisfying as people-watching on the beach - but better' (Carson Howat, The Scotsman).

The Years Free on Saturday 3rd August only. 'The Years' is a 'faction' novel - some would even call it the 'non-fiction novel' (see Wikipedia). The first chapter outlines, in graphic detail, the facts of Bloody Sunday on January 30th 1972 when fourteen men - many of them teenagers - were shot dead and twenty seven injured by British paratroopers. The rest of the story is part fiction, with fictitious characters but as impeccably researched as a history book. Told in the forceful language of Derry's streets, The Years is a roller coaster ride down forty years of the town's history. Francie, released from jail after a long sentence, is trying to come to terms with the changes peace has brought, as well as dealing with what he did - and didn't - do on Bloody Sunday.
Meanwhile, the unnamed paratrooper who killed a man on Bloody Sunday, is having to return to the nightmare he left behind decades earlier.
A deeply-moving and thought-provoking story, The Years is also a thundering good read. This is one of the best accounts you will ever come across of what really happened on Derry's Bloody Sunday but it is more than that: it is about personal responsibility and forgiveness.
Alexis Scott was born in Derry and was a teenager living there at the time of Bloody Sunday. She moved to Scotland in 1973 and trained as a solicitor there. Her other books include 'Eating Wolves', 'Hidden Histories', 'Deaconsbank' and 'Martyrs and Other Stories'.

The Secret Alchemist, kindle edition free on Friday 2nd August and Saturday 3rd August.
"It's a sunny Saturday in Geneva in late June. Tourists pound the city's heat-soaked pavements, lured by the prospect of sophisticated sight-seeing in such a beautiful lakeside setting.
Skimming across the water, affluent denizens sit on the rails of their yachts, loosening the sheets, and feeling the breeze on their faces.
The siren call of summer, though, doesn't lure Teddi Woods out of her apartment. Puzzled by the email in her inbox, she realises that she has discovered something that was meant to stay secret.
Her destiny seems inevitable, but can she escape the vortex of destruction before it is too late?"
The Secret Alchemist is a novel with a difference, set in the world of tax avoidance by global businesses and featuring Teddi Woods, an idealistic, twenty-something professional enjoying a job posting to Geneva

Bet your life on Jesus (Die Schrecken/The Books of Terror)Bet your life on Jesus. (A gamer's guide to God) For free for now.

God‘s grace is free. As free as the south-wind on a summer evening. As free as a mocking bird or a mountain in the distance. It is there for the one who truly wants it. Which is what, in my earlier years I was uneasy about. How could such a wonderful thing as God‘s grace be free? It took me years before I understood. Many great things are free. It doesn‘t mean they are cheap or easy to be had. Like that high mountain in the distance. To climb him is free, usually at least. It is there for the taking. For a very high mountain it is free, but not easy to get there. Ever dreamt of climbing the Himalaya? It is free. But it is very expensive at the same time. Preparation, material, companions, stores, gear, travel expenses and more. It adds up. May the mountain be free, the way there is not. Such is, to my understanding, God‘s grace. Like the apple hanging too high. It is free for the taking. But how to get it? I spent years on cheap detours, never willing to take this free thing. Like Naaman, who would refuse the easy way of dipping in the river, he figured something big should happen. But nothing big happened. That is what grace is like. Easy, accessible, beautiful. Terrifying, costly to the pride, looming peak of a threatening far away mountain. Wonderfully free. Man is free to climb it. If he has the guts to go for it. No amount of money, no picture taken or book read will take this from him. In order to get it he needs to get up an go. Go to the fountain for free water. The water of the Spirit is free as well. If ever you have been thirsty, get some. It is fearsomely free.

Ms A. Scott meint:
Hidden Histories Free on Tuesday 6th August only, HIDDEN HISTORIES is a historical/family saga spanning four generations of women and almost eighty years, set in Ireland, Scotland and England. It is a story of loss: of the separation of mothers from their children and of the bonds between them. It is also about the impact of political and historic forces on ordinary lives, the interdependence of past and present, exploring how identity is transmitted from one generation to the next.
The story begins with cousins Margaret and Tillie, Protestants from Belfast, in 1916. Margaret - a mill girl - is pregnant when she marries and goes off to live in Scotland with her new husband - a Lanarkshire miner. Tillie - a qualified nurse - goes away to join the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) during the First World War and then marries and settles in London. While the cousins exchange letters their lives could scarcely be more different...
