"Time And The Gods" was first published 1905, through it the author, Lord Dunsany, an Irish peer, writer, soldier, hunter, and world class chess player contributed to lay the foundation for what nowadays is considered the genre of fantastic, or simply put "fantasy" literature. This title went out of print again and again, like most of the more than 60 books that Dunsany wrote during his lifetime, thus his creative output was mostly forgotten by all but a few. In this work, as in "The Gods Of Pegana" (which preceeded it), Dunsany weaves a splendid tapestry out of the golden thread that is the unique use of the English language and the ability to dream up whole worlds of fantasy - long before J.R.R Tolkien received credit for his own creation of Middle Earth (which appears to have inspired any other writer in the genre ever since). Although his volumes of poetry failed to find the recognition of the literary world, his lyrical prose is a just as fine example for Dunsany's talent to let his readers become listeners; auditors of one of the finest storytellers in literature. This book deserves its place on our bookshelves, just beside Homer's Odyssey or Virgil's Aeneid. The reader will encounter "things that befell gods and men ... in the countries of ... dreams"; told of in a style that makes the even most improbable of images summoned or events depicted seem to ring out perfectly true. We have yet to see the equal of Dunsany as a writer of the fantastic - Dunsany was the man who started it all. Treat yourself to twenty of the finest tales of fantasy ever written by buying "Time And The Gods"!

I would like to recommend this book to all lovers of great literature. Lord Dunsany is a weaver of magic, whose unique style and use of language never fails to put me under his spell. The first editions of the books contained in this Anthology might cost you $ 500 or more, but the prose itself is as priceless as the works of Homer, Virgil or even Shakespeare are.
5 stars? I might as well give 50 !!! Buy this book !!!
