Overall: We were in India for 2 months (Feb/Mar 2008; this is NOT high season!) and this was by far the worst LP guidebook I ever had for almost 2 decades. Although only 6 months old almost all of its information is outdated.

Examples:
- In most hotels you pay approximately 50-100% more
- Between many destinations LP indicates only very few buses (2-4 per day) but in fact there are 20 to 30.
- And thousand other examples

How could that be?

First we thought that some writers (about one dozen wrote this LP) cheated LP. E.g. after facing so many things different from the LP in Radjasthan we asked a hotel owner in Udaipur why his rooms are 100% more expansive than indicated in the LP.
His answer was: "The last time the LP guy came here was more than 3 years ago. Have a look: In the newest LP is my art shop described, but I closed it more than 2 years ago. The information in the guidebook is old."
=> You can have a look who wrote the Radjasthan part...

But when we received similar statements in other Indian states (which were described by other authors) we came to the conclusion that not almost every author could have cheated LP. => Make up you own mind about the only possible explanation

Sometimes it becomes really ridiculous. It seems that LP sometimes ESTIMATED the current costs and prices instead of sending the authors to India again for the current 12th edition.
Examples:
- From Mamallapuram to Chennai Airport it is stated in the LP that you have to bargain really very hard at the local taxi stand directly and can be very lucky to pay only 900 Rs. for the ride. Sorry LP, but every travel agency in Mamallapuram (appr. each 5 meters) offers with very big letters this ride for 800 Rs. without any bargaining ...and oil prices which are the main cost component for taxi prices in India increased significantly from Sep 2007 to Feb 2008... I think from the taxi stand you should be able to get the ride for 600-650 Rs.
- From Pondycherry to Mamallapuram the LP writes that there are only 4-5 direct buses daily. Sorry LP-idiots, but this changed some years ago and now there is a direct bus every 20 minutes...
- and thousand other examples

Our advice: Buy a different guidebook for India. This has also the advantage that you go for different hotels than described in the LP. In every city we found far better hotels concerning the price-value-ratio than described in the LP

Some useful hints from us for India:

- When you plan your journey and want to use trains check out
http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_srcdest_names.html
at home and make hardcopies of all the trains between two destinations. Brings these printouts to India You will be lucky in India to know the train numbers which you always need for reservations in India. These timetables make the whole conversation at the train stations much easier.

- Buy your train tickets as soon as possible (every hour counts!), always some days in advance! Do not be afraid to get a ticket on the waiting list if you are in the low double digits. You can check via internet some ours before if you got a seat in the end (high probability) or not. If not you will get all your money back at the train station except for a fee of 20 Rs.

- Keep in mind that you can buy train tickets at every station in India for all rides (needn't be in the same city!)

- Use buses! They are going really very frequently and are mostly the better alternative to trains! Except for one case we never waited more than 30 minutes for the next bus in two months!
LP says that bus rides are unsafe in India. Complete bullshit!!!!!!! They are really the same like in Thailand or Middle America etc. Maybe the LP authors compared the risks with buses in Disneyland?

- Bring small USD bills (1 and 5 USD). For the most tourist sites you pay 100 Rs. or 2 USD entrance fee (your own choice). Keep in mind: Currently 1 USD equals approximately 38 Rs. For world heritage sites India demands 250 Rs. or 5 USD entrance fee
=> You save with USD bills more than 1 Euro per person. Keep in mind that normally (except the Taj Mahal) the guys at the entrance cannot change USD. Therefore bring small USD bills.

There would be many more things to say. Find them out by your own and best WITHOUT this LP for India!!!!!!!!!

wie der LP auch unter Backpackern genannt wird, ist einfach der beste Reiseführer für jeden Backpacker, der keinen Luxus Urlaub plant. Gerade in einem Land wie Indien mit einer komplett anderen Kultur, in der man sich nicht so schnell zurecht findet, ist dieses Buch ein Muß! Ich würde mir immer die englische Version kaufen, da sie meistens aktueller ist, und schließlich kann man in Indien nur Englisch reden. Die passenden Vokabeln lernt man schnell, indem man im LP ließt. Es findet sich dort eigentlich alles was man sucht. Über günstige Hotels, gibt es Empfehlungen über die Regionen, Städte und Verkehrsmittel, auch darüber wie eine Reiseapotheke am besten aussehen sollte. Außerdem wird der LP von vielen Benutzern immer auf den aktuellsten Stand gehalten, so werden sämtliche Zuschriften in die nächsten Version eingearbeitet, und dies sind tausende !! Das Buch ist übersichtlich aufgebaut, es ist erst nach Regionen und dann nach Städten sortiert. Es befinden sich sogar ganze Fahrpläne und Angaben über die Regelmäßigkeit der Verbindung darin, was gerade in Indien wichtig ist, da man sich dort auf keine Angaben verlassen kann, und Versprechen über irgendwelche Termine oder Dinge selten eingehalten werden.

I happen to be an Indian and bought this book to have a better idea of my country.I am impressed by the coverage of the book. It covers a lot of ground and the collection of maps is really good... from the Golconda Fort to Kanyakumari city.

There is the element of humour in the writings.... makes it all the more interesting.

As others have written, prices change.. esp in a country like India. The hotel rates etc. have risen. Be aware of that fact.

A great buy.

spent 5 weeks in many dif regions in India. Very impressed by the details from the book in rural towns. The book may be a bit bulky, but pays off in effectiveness. A must have!
