Kurzbeschreibung

From beloved mother-daughter duo Mary Higgins Clark, America's Queen of Suspense, and Carol Higgins Clark, author of the hugely popular Regan Reilly mystery series, comes Dashing Through the Snow, a holiday treat you won't want to miss.

In the picturesque village of Branscombe, New Hampshire, the townsfolk are all pitching in to prepare for the first (and many hope annual) Festival of Joy. The night before the festival begins, a group of employees at the local market learn that they have won $160 million in the lottery. One of their co-workers, Duncan, decided at the last minute, on the advice of a pair of crooks masquerading as financial advisers, not to play. Then he goes missing. A second winning lottery ticket was purchased in the next town, but the winner hasn't come forward. Could Duncan have secretly bought it?

The Clarks' endearing heroes -- Alvirah Meehan, the amateur sleuth, and private investigator Regan Reilly -- have arrived in Branscombe for the festival. They are just the people to find out what is amiss. As they dig beneath the surface, they find that life in Branscombe is not as tranquil as it appears. So much for an old-fashioned weekend in the country. This fast-paced holiday caper will keep you dashing through the pages!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing: foreseeable story and flat characters, 29. Dezember 2008
Diese Rezension stammt von: Dashing Through the Snow (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I got this book from my wife as Christmas present - probably because of the well made title and the cosy cover page. However, overall the book is very disappointing: the story is very foreseeable and the characters are very "flat".

Regarding the story:
The overall plot is nice and the book is easily read up to the end - therefore I give more than one star. However, very quickly many unprobable things happen. Since everything is quite foreseeable, by mid of the book the reader does not have any doubt how the story will end.

Regarding the characters:
Every character can easily be put into the "good" or "bad guy" category. Of course, all good characters are close to genius and the bad ones are really evil. Maybe the the book would be a good children's book?
Another very disturbing thing is that all characters look very "ideal American" to me: the good ones put great energy into common activties and volunteer happily at a festival, the police officer is so loyal to the law that he does not use his mobile on an empty street etc. Of course, being evil does not pay off.

For those looking to really "chilling" stories and rich characters, I highly recommend the books by, e.g., the Scottish crime writer Denise Mina!
