Book Description

Alanis Morissette, the Canadian singer/songwriter, burst onto the music scene in 1995 with her controversial single 'You Oughta Know', a hate letter to a lover who had betrayed her. It was a massive hit and brought widespread fame to the singer, showcasing her versatile voice with its range from a breathy whisper to a frenzied, angry howl. Her Jagged Little Pill album has since earned her four Grammy awards and gone multi-platinum, selling over 9 million copies and topping the charts around the world.

This was not Alanis Morissette's first taste of fame, however: a former child prodigy, she began playing music at six, recorded her first single at ten and by thirteen had formed her own record label. Nor did many new fans know that she had been a teenage pop idol in Canada before finding her new musical direction, one that is innovative and critically acclaimed as well as incredibly popular.

Stuart Coles, a British music journalist, focuses on the events that transformed her from teen disco-queen to an icon of alternative music and figurehead for 'angry young women' everywhere. He traces her growing disillusion with her musical direction and fading sales, her move to Los Angeles in search of inspiration, and her realisation that through music she could overcome the frustrations and insecurities of her life. Looking at the contradictions in this singer's remarkable life, he examines her anti-star beliefs and unusual opposition to drugs, alcohol, caffeine and smoking. Placing her in the context of female musicians in rock history, he also assesses the controversy surrounding her success, with critical claims that she is a 'record company invention' and that her angry young woman attitude is just a facade. Alanis Morissette: Death of Cinderella is the first book to explore this talented singer's rollercoaster life.

Synopsis

Traces the life and career of the popular Canadian rock singer, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at her recordings.

1.0 von 5 Sternen If you love Alanis, you'll hate this!, 27. Juli 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Text-wise, this is my least favorite Alanis book. The pictures are all very pretty, though (my personal favorite is the one on page 26.) In this book, the first five or six chapters are tedious and dry. The author had simply re-written Paul Cantin's account on Alanis's early years in a boring way. (Paul's book is the greatest!) Since he had to be concise, Stuart Coles left out interesting, unknown details about her life and rambled on about what we know already. If this guy speaks as dully as he writes, we would have a cure for insomnia. However, what I hate the most is his use of words. The words "whilst" "thus" etc. keep popping up until you want to strangle this guy! In addition, he disses and worships Alanis in the same sentences. "The record is simply stunning and beautiful, if not a little plain and repetitive at times." "Alanis's voice is always compelling but her shows are boring." The author also says things that are simply rude. "Guitars were pored over with predictable rockist, mastabatory indulgence." Many of the facts in the book are also inaccurate: according to Mr. Coles, Alanis started piano at 9, and JLP was released JUNE 13, 1994. Can you believe it? The chapter "Awards and Attacks" is extremely hurtful on Alanis and her fans behalf. The author pretends not to criticize her by stating that "many critics have said" or "so-and-so declared." Then, he defends her and insults her once again. And, uh, don't listen to what this guy says about Alanis's future, she will NOT live alone in a cabin writing music for her own pleasure . I DO NOT recommend the text of this book for any Alanis fans. Myself, I simply look at the pictures.

4.0 von 5 Sternen interesting, informative, feel closer to Alanis, 7. Oktober 1999
This is a great book! There was however one big mistake that I saw. It mentions that on her 21st birthday she sang infront of a crowd of 300 people. I was at that concert June 1st 1995. There was more like 20,000 people!!!!!!!!
