This satisfying sequel to Goodkind's powerful debut novel, Wizard's First Rule, has everything one could ask for in an epic fantasy. In the earlier book, Seeker of Truth Richard Cypher tricked the sorcerer Darken Rahl by using Wizard's First Rule (that people are stupid and can be easily misled) into opening the wrong Box of Orden. Though this saved humanity from the evil mage's tyrannies, it also tore the veil between worlds, so the diabolical Keeper of the Underworld can now reach through and seize permanent control of the living. To stop this from happening, Richard must now learn how to be a wizard. The Sisters of the Light promise they will teach him to wield his powers, but they require that he wear a collar of obedience, something he has sworn he would rather die than do. Events sweep Richard and his betrothed, the Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell, apart from one another; later, in one of the most vigorous battle sequences written for a heroine in modern fantasy, Kahlan leads her underage troops against battle-hardened soldiers, the young warriors naked except for a spectral coat of whitewash intended to make them look like "spirits." Those who like their fantasy big and brassy will revel in this exemplar of the genre.

The second volume of The Sword of Truth continues the quest of Richard Cypher, reluctant hero turned magical warrior, and his beloved Kahlan Amnell, the last Mother Confessor. Twisting the traditional roles (now common enough in fiction but done particularly well here), it is Richard who has to handle the magical part of the quest and Kahlan who must lead armies against the surviving forces of the dead mage, Darken Rahl. Not as tightly written as it might be, this volume yet features plenty of action, some engaging characters, and world building full of nice touches and intelligence. Goodkind's prospective series may have been encouraged by Robert Jordan's successful Wheel of Time saga. Goodkind has not yet attained Jordan's level of performance, but he now has two big, well-told yarns under his belt, which bodes well for the forthcoming rest. I have just finish the Stone of Tears and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can honestly say that I did not want the book to end, despite being almost 1000 pages long. The adventure started in the first book continues on in epic fashion. This book explains a great deal more about the background the magic and it's users. The story line splits into three parts early on in the book between Richard, Kahlan and Zedd and then rejoins again at the end. Each embarks on a separate but united goal. The Stone of Tears just wet my appetite for the next book since there are still a few loose ends. What I enjoy most about this book is how it draws you in to the story. When I start to read, it feels as if I enter their world and leave this one behind. In my option, this going to great series, one in which I will remember for a long time.

That is a good thing. I just finished,not ten minutes ago, reading this book. The only bad things I have to to say is that My eyes hurt from reading so long. I started this book a week ago after reading the first in the series. Sunday morning I decided to read one chapter before I'd take a shower, soon that one chapter turned to two , then to three, then four. Before I could grasp what happend It was 12:31 monday morning. I am now going to take my shower and some advil because not once, while I was reading this 982pg. book, could I pull myself away from it to find my reading glasses which help me from getting headaches when I read for long times.

I would suggest this book to anyone who loves a good story. Don't let the book's size scare you away from reading it. the story is so gripping that you will be done with in the time it took you to read 100pgs of a book assigned to you in highschool. But a warning to those who read this book; you will lose all sence of time and knowledge of what is going on around you.

This book also did another thing to me besides taking my day away. It restored my trust in the fantasy genre which had been take away by a number of bad Fantasies I have come across resently.

I enjoyed "Wizard's First Rule" enough that I pretty much went straight into this sequel. And it was grand. For a while. The problem I felt with it was it breathed nothing new into the fantasy genre. I won't bother with the Jordan comparisons - they're there but then you can always compare the Aes Sedai to Dune's Bene Gesserit, etc. Originality is rare in fantasy. What really really really irritated me about this book was the ending. It drove me insane almost. The whole tone of the book is fairly bleak and dark and yet the ending...resolved in a few mere pages it is totally disjointed next to the rest of the book. In addition I can't feel anything for Richard or Kahlan. In fact they can be both more irritating than likable. Unlike Janny Wurts "Wars of Light and Shadow" characters, which have great depth to them, Goodkind's characters come across riddled with cliches too often...Yes the same can be said of many fantasy authors but the style of Goodkind's writing suggests he's trying to be deeper and more meaningful. That's why I can enjoy Feist - it's not deep but it's not *trying* to be.

The style of writing by itself is grand and there are good moments in it. It gets 2 stars because of the none-involving characters, a plot which seems to jerk from point to point on ocassion and largely due to the terrible awful ending...

I WOULD give Goodkind another go but not before I'm uptodate with better authors first.
