In a classic fantasy world, young Richard Cypher must go on a perilous quest with the Sword of Truth in order to deal with evils that have a contemporary degree of ambiguity about them. On the way, he acquires the normal collection of wizards, dragons, and human companions as well as an equivalent roster of enemies. Both the characters and their world come to life, and Goodkind's ambitious juxtaposition of modern ambiguities and the classical fantasy setting works more often than not. Although a fairly self-contained story, the book has something of the flavor of the first volume of a saga; neither Goodkind nor his publisher will receive too many complaints if a sequel is in the works. Hardly an aspirant to Tolkien's mantle, Goodkind certainly seems, at any rate, to be working on being mentioned in the same breath as Robert Jordan. The magical boundaries between the three lands of forest guide Richard Cypher's world are crumbling: Strange beasts from the Midlands, where magic still exists, appear in his Westland forest. And so does Kahlan Amnell, a young woman with some interesting powers and four assassins on her trail. She is in search of the great wizard who left the Midlands not long after he set the boundaries. He is the only one who can possibly thwart Darken Rahl, an evil wizard who has set in motion a process that will result in the enslavement of the three lands. When Richard's eccentric friend and mentor, Zedd, is sought out for advice about finding the great wizard, Kahlan identifies Zedd as the object of her search. The process that Darken Rahl has initiated requires him to obtain the three boxes of Orden, and, within one year, to open the proper box. As time grows short, Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, and a border guard, Chase, go in quest of the one box that the evil wizard still lacks. Among the truths that Richard learns along the way is the wisdom of the Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid and will believe almost anything. I've got to first say that I'm a real sucker for fantasy. That said, I was very impressed by Wizard's First Rule. The elements of magic and gallantry are strong, with better romance than I've ever read. However, some elements of plot are just left hanging (ie how and when exactly did Chase give Michael the message? That might have led to some very interesting developments.). Also, though I hate to say it, I can detect some glaring ripoffs from Robert Jordan, my personal favorite (yes, 7 and 8 were slow, but they set up for Winter's Heart, which will clearly be the best in the series). For instance, Mord-Sith (and isn't the name a bit reminiscent of Star Wars?) are the equal of sul'dam, both of the male protagonists are temporarily in the dark about their fathers, and both are unknown chosen ones who rise from common nothingness into messiahs. However, since Jordan's was published 4 years before, I would have to say that Goodkind took some material off of him, if modified. Also, though I may be too used to Jordan's practice of exquisite detail, it seems that Goodkind has nowhere near enough background behind anything. The underworld is left a mystery, the magic system is completely untouched, and the world is somewhat vague. The magic is most frustrating-who knows what Zedd or Kahlan could really do? Maybe this was left unclear so they can unleash previously untouched spells (Blood Rage) but I would appreciate some insight to the single most important part in any fantasy-the magic. One last point-this book is really, truly sick in some parts. Darken Rahl's anthropomancy, the numerous accounts of testicle consumption, and the practices of the Mord-Sith are a bit overdone, though I must admit that they add to the mood. All in all, Wizard's First Rule was a satisfying piece of fantasy, and I'm a fairly sure bet to finish the series.

I really wanted to enjoy this book because it came to me highly recommended, as a gift from a dear friend. Unfortunately, getting through its bulk was torture (in some portions, literally). Goodkind did have some interesting ideas about magic and plot twists that kept me reading doggedly on to find out "what happens next?" - unfortunately, his writing style was so puerile, sappy, and heavy-handed that every other sentence made me wince. The dialogue, particularly between Richard and Kahlan, was especially atrocious: "Oh Richard, I don't think I've ever had a real friend before." "Oh Kahlan, I'll teach you all about what it means to be a friend." Not the exact words, but close enough for discomfort!

I've read the first sequel as well, which was just as compelling a story but no better written.

Bottom line: If you appreciate well-crafted sentences in your fantasy novels, you're much better off with Tolkien, Robin Hobb, or Stephen R. Donaldson. If all you care about is plot, go ahead and give this behemoth a ride.

Da ich immer noch auf Folge-Bände für "The wheel of time" von Robert Jordan warte, die übrigens sehr zu empfehlen sind, hab ich mir für die Zwischenzeit die "Sword of truth"-Bände zugelegt. Ich war zwar sehr überrascht und etwas amüsiert über die mehr als auffälligen Parallelen zu Robert Jordans Geschichten, hab aber trotzdem Gefallen an Terry Goodkinds Geschichten um Richard und Kahlan gefunden. Jedenfalls bis Ende des 4. Bandes... Soul of the fire lässt dann aber sehr zu wünschen übrig - Goodkind verliert sich in enldlosen Beschreibungen und uninteressanten Einzelheiten - langweilig!
Ob ich die weiteren Bände noch lese werde ich mir noch gut überlegen...
