With the divine hammer - as the second part of the Kingpriest Trilogy - the story of the Istarian church goes on. Great fights and some greater magics make this a fantastic book to read. Though the plot is quite predictable - everyone knows what must happen at the end of the third part (Cataclysm) - and evil seems to be ever mightier than the good. After all it seems not reasonable that the Kingpriest is suddenly just lost and foresaken by the gods.
For all dragonlance fans a must!

Chris Pierson is growing as an author and this book shows it! This isn't your usual middle book in a trilogy. There is no marching around, no slow motion advancement of nearly no plot.

The predecessor Chosen of the Gods was a much needed break from the usual action-driven standard gaming novel one expects. It focused more on the characters and less on swordplay. Divine Hammer takes this one step further. Pierson slowly evolves his characters and displays the change of Beldyn from being a messiah to becoming a deadly tyrant. Piersons great achievement in this book is to show the characters as human beings. You can understand their motivations. Every character is in some way flawed. The second major villain Andras has a side that makes you sympathise with him and Fistantantilus is handled just right - as an evil enigma. The main protagonists evolve over the course of the book and are a far cry from your usual good guy / bad guy formulars.

Divine Hammer still has enough action and thrill to satisfy those who yearn for battles and bloodshed. But it isn't the focus of the book. Rather those battles work as catalysts for the characters evolvement.

I cannot recommend this book enough. Chris Pierson should try his own series and quit work for hire. He is that good! Still I can't wait for the conclusion.
