Chosen of the Gods marks a departure for the reader of the usual gaming novel. The novel doesn't concentrate on action as much as a gaming novel usually does but it also isn't strong enough as a character study. Rather this reads like an opening move in a bigger game.

But darn it is an interesting opening move! At the end of the book the stage is set for Divine Hammer, the second novel in this series. You have a host of characters. Some - like Beldyn/Beldinas - a literary success, others - like Krunos the Ursuper - bland and one dimensional.

The story itself is nothing grand. An overly aggressive Kingpriest ascend the throne and decides to bring down a rebellion in a distant state by the force of arms. Enter the Lightbringer - a messiah send by Paladine himself. The Lightbringer soon brings a lot of people behind his agenda. Assassination attemps fail, followers sacrifice themselves for the Lightbringer, and every now and then it is hinded at that this Lightbringer has a lot of flaws.

Again, by itself this is an interesting experiment that wins on some levels and looses on others. But it is a promising start into a new series.

"Chosen of the Gods" by Chris Pierson is the first book from the "Kingpriest Trilogy". The Kingprist, ruler of the mighty empire of Istar is the most powerful priest on Krynn. When he dies a young man claims to be the "lightbringer", chosen of the gods of good to eradicate all evil. But in the heart of light a dark shadow has arisen...
This book has everything a good book needs:
Heroes and villains, an interisting plot and excellent character development.
I recomend this book to everyone who wants to explore the world of the Dragonlance before the Cataclysm.

The "Chosen of the Gods" is the great beginning of a trilogy about a time long forgotten - before the Cataclysm. It's a MUST for every dragonlance fan and gives many detailed information about the churches of the good gods. The scenario reminds me of the catholic church during the middle age - powerful - but politics and intrigues are ruling. Oh, and you'll find lots of action too. And there are some old friends: Fistandantilus for one - or Paladine himself - in quite a different appearance this time.
It is great story - though the beginning might be a bit long at some passages - about the true kingpriest and some of his loyal friends. But, and that is most fascinating, though everyone is supposed to be "good" you will find that this is not always true and even the Chosen of the gods seems to have darker sides than one might have guessed - darkness and ambition finds a way.
The way of the gods cannot be foreseen - or can it?
