At first sight this book might seem loaded with cliches: its a part of a saga, it has goblins, dragons, and unicorns, and, quite naturally, the protagonists are a "band of unlikely heroes" (a despondent knight, an overprotective tribesman, a sorcerous princess, a wise but tortured leader, a grumpy dwarf, a sinister mage, and a naive, fearless hobbit-type character fill the extensive cast of heroes). So how does the first book in the Dragonlance Chronicles manage to hold its own, and, moreover, become a long-time bestseller? It has a believable, cohesive plot, it is communicated in a clear, precise language, it is filled with brilliant imagery, and it doesn't try to mimic the modern world (unlike the hundreds of "pagan fantasy" novels that are flooding the market today).The first novel about the world of Dragonlance was created out of the AD&D game, which enjoys quite a number of interesting settings. Nevertheless, this is legitimate fantasy (I wrote this sentense for the people who sneer at the mention of role-playing) at its highest. Whether Tanis and friends are dealing with undead, ancient temples, dragons, or other obstacles, we, as the readers, are always treated to sophisticated ethical dilemmas and intelligent thinking. However standard the plot might seem (an old evil rises once again) by fantasy standards, it seems fresh and interesting, because the novel doesn't focus on any one aspect of fantasy - there's mystery, suspence, thrill abound, open-mouthed awe, romance, drama, pretty much everything. The characters are living people, rather than sword-swinging smart-mouthed automatons. Oh, a word of warning: there are over eighty books set in the world of Dragonlance. And not all of them are good. Try and be intelligent.

The BEST Novel ever!, 30. Dezember 2008
First of all: If you managed to stumble across this book for the first time in your life, let me say: 1. Well Done. 2. I envy you!
When I first read Autumn twilight in the late 1980s, I never thought that there would ever be a book that I liked that much as Lord of the Rings. Frankly, Autumn Twilight (and the whole Chronicles and Legends Trilogies) wipes the floor with Tolkien. Sorry, I love Tolkien, but these fantasy saga plays in another league. Weiss/Hickmann created a world, unparalled and with so much creativity and emotions, that - up to now - its the only book I ever cried when reading and on the other side laughed out loud!
The characters are filled with so much life, that I bear them in my heart till today. 99 % of all books I read, I forget about the story, the names of the characters about a week later. But I still know all the names of the Dragonlance Chronicles! And: I never loved a character so much as Tasslehoff Burrfoot!
If you were moved to a lonely island and could pick only one book: Take this one!

Für Fantasy-Fans ein absoutes Muß, 12. Oktober 2001

Dieses Buch ist das erste Buch der "Dragonlance Chronicles" und auch das erste Buch das in der Dragonlance-Serie, die inzwischen Dutzende von Titeln umfaßt, herauskam.
Erzählt wird die Geschichte einer Gruppe von tapferen Kämpfern, die sich nach 5 Jahren wieder treffen. Doch das gemütliche Treffen zwischen Halbelf, Kender, tapferem Ritter, Magier und seinem Bruder wird schon bald von einem neuen Abenteuer abgelöst. Mit einem Paar aus der Steppe, daß einen magischen Stab mit sich führt, befinden sich die alten Freunde, immer auf der Suche nach den lange verschwundenen alten Göttern, auf der Flucht vor dunklen Mächten, Drachen und böser Magie.
Die Gruppe kämpft sich mit Stärke und ein bißchen Zauberei bis in eine alte, zerstört geglaubte Stadt, wo sie auf ein erstes Zeichen der alten Götter stoßen. Doch dort ist ihre Reise noch lange nicht beendet, denn ihr Auftrag ist es nun auch, den alten Göttern auf ihren rechten Platz in der Welt zurückzuhelfen.
Das Buch, geschrieben vom Autorenteam Margaret Weis und Tracy Hickmann, erzählt eine spannende Geschichte von Ehre, Treue und Ruhm in einer vom Bösen bedrohten Welt. Obwohl ich bisher nur diesen ersten Band gelesen habe bin ich schon sehr auf die beiden weiteren Bände der Chronicles, "Dragons of Winter Night" und "Dragons of Spring Dawning" gespannt. Und danach wartet ja noch die komplette Serie auf mich!
Meiner Meinung nach sollte jeder Fantasy-Fan diese Serie kennen und in diese Welt, voll von Magie, Elfen, Drachen und vielem mehr eintauchen.
