Expanded from a story that first appeared in Robert Silverberg's anthology Legends (1998), Jordan's eagerly awaited prequel to The Wheel of Time, the first of a projected three, more than lives up to its high expectations. For three days, battle has raged around the city of Tar Valon. In the White Tower two young Accepted attend the Amyrlin Seat and her Keeper as they await word of the outcome. Purely by chance, Moiraine Damodred and Siuan Sanche are on duty when the Keeper foretells the rebirth of the Dragon, the world's only hope of winning the fight against the Dark One. Written with all the skill that has made Jordan one of the grand masters of fantasy, it's accessible enough for new readers, while the inside information is sure to captivate longtime fans. Far from the coldly self-possessed Aes Sedai who arrives in Emond's Field in The Eye of the World, the first Wheel book, Moiraine is a fun-loving, prank-playing and naïve Accepted, one who slowly grows into a determined and resourceful character. Even better, the narrative is flush with answers to mysteries only hinted at in Wheel (what was the test for Aes Sedai, what was "the Vileness") and with little details aimed at those in the know. Jordan buffs will be especially pleased to find the novel moves quickly, not at the glacial pace of recent books in the saga.

Jordan's best-selling Wheel of Time stands at 10 volumes and counting, and now he starts a prequel series by expanding his contribution to Legends (1998), an anthology of stories set in the worlds of their authors' novel-series. Basically, the new tale is about how two Wheel protagonists--the soldier Lan Mandragoran, claimant to the throne of a kingdom long defunct; and Moiraine of the royal house of Cairhien, an initiate of the sorceresses known as Aes Sedai--met. The momentous event comes early in the search for the infant boy who, grown up, may save the perpetually warring Wheel world from the Dark One. It doesn't occur, however, until this book is winding down. The preceding pages, after an opening in which Lan and his command are reprieved from certain death when the enormous army they are about to engage turns and marches away, focus on Moraine's and her friend Siuan's last days as wanna-be, and first as new-fledged, Aes Sedai. Both take their new status as license to look for the child of destiny, and they have inside dope, thanks to having heard a senior Aes Sedai announce the child's birth with her dying breath. The term padding comes to mind soon and often as New Spring blooms. Perhaps it should have been left a short story, and perhaps only Wheel of Time junkies will genuinely enjoy it. After antagonizing many of the loyal fans of WoT by letting the main story drag on forever without getting one step closer to The Last Battle, Mr. Jordan starts a series of prequels? I'd prefer to see the main story leading anywhere than read about how Lan and Moraine first met. I still enjoy the original series, because it is well written and the thorough story development really lets this series stand out among other fantasy stories. However, the amount of time spent on fleshing out the background of each and every character and their own agendas was more than enough in the original series - to say the least. I'm getting the funny feeling that RJ doesn't care so much about giving the avid readers more of what they want, but rather milking the cow as much as possible. IMHO, there was absolutely NO NEED to write this prequel, but not reading it might have left me with the feeling that I had missed some important aspect of the story. Without giving away too much of "A New Spring", I think I can tell you that this would not have been the case: The results of each and every aspect of the prequel will be known to anyone who made it to - let's say - Book 4 of WoT. Taken as a fantasy story in it's own right, it's actually quite good. The negative review refers more to the fact that it is so annoying to wait for the climax of the series, and now we're faced with "And this is how the story began...". A message to Robert Jordan: "We know how the story BEGAN. We want to know how it ENDS." The sooner the better - I'm getting a little tired after > 5000 pages, with still more to come.

Contrary to "Publisher Weekly"'s beliefs, I have not awaited this prequel - neither eagerly nor with indifference. I plainly didn't want or need a prequel at this time. Is it only me who thinks that a prequel should be published once the original storyline has finished? We've seen book 10 of the original "Wheel of Time"-saga, without having come close to the conclusion of this epic. With a publishing schedule of 1 book every 2-3 years, some of us might already have moved on to a better world before having a chance to read about the final confrontation between the Dark One and the Dragon Reborn. The storyline has been moving at a mind-numbingly slow pace in the latest 3 volumes of WoT, and now we are given a prequel to "The Eye of the World". "New Spring" is not a bad book in ist own right, but rather unnecessary for the events that currently evolve around Rand and his Merry Men. Obviously an author has every right to choose the publishing order of his books, but if he gives more than a rat's ass about what his fans want, he shouldn't alienate them further and at least finish the story before trying to milk the cow with prequels to the actual story.

"New Spring" ist eine ausführlichere Version der gleichnamigen Kurzgeschichte, die Jordan 1998 in R. Silverberg's Sammelband "Legends" veröffentlichte. Der Autor erzählt den Beginn der Geschichte vom Wiedergeborenen Drachen: vom Kampf mit den Aiel vor den Toren Tar Valons, von den jungen Frauen Moraine und Siuan, als sie noch den Status von Accepted hatten, von einem einsamen und heimatlosen Königssohn namens Lan, und nicht zuletzt von der Begegnung zwischen Moraine und Lan mit all ihren Folgen.

Diese Vorgeschichte zu Jordans "Wheel of Time" Serie liest sich wie die ersten Bände derselben. Frisch erzählt und unbelastet von dem langatmigen und teils schwerfälligen Stil der späteren Bände. Hier kann man die Begeisterung des Autors spüren zu den Wurzeln seines Epos zurück zu kehren... ohne Zweifel erweckt der Band das Gefühl, vielmehr ein Jungbrunnen für den Autor zu sein als ein Versuch mit noch einer Geschichte aus der Welt des "Wheel of Time" Geld zu machen. Für alle Fantasy-Leser zu empfehlen, ganz besonders für diejenigen die schon im Begriff sind sich von Jordans nahezu endlos scheinender Geschichte abzuwenden.

weniger (Seiten) wären auch hier mehr (Unterhaltungswert) gewesen. Eigentlich könnte man etwa ein Drittel bis die Hälfte des Buches streichen ohne der Geschichte, die als solche... Lesen Sie weiter...
