Kurzbeschreibung

'Henry Corbin's works are the best guide to the visionary tradition...Corbin, like Scholem and Jonas, is remembered as a scholar of genius. He was uniquely equipped not only to recover Iranian Sufism for the West, but also to defend the principal Western traditions of esoteric spirituality'. - From the introduction by Harold Bloom Ibn 'Arabi (1165-1240) was one of the great mystics of all time. Through the richness of his personal experience and the constructive power of his intellect, he made a unique contribution to Shi'ite Sufism. In this book, which features a powerful new preface by Harold Bloom, Henry Corbin brings us to the very core of this movement with a penetrating analysis of Ibn 'Arabi's life and doctrines. Corbin begins with a kind of spiritual topography of the twelfth century, emphasizing the differences between exoteric and esoteric forms of Islam. He also relates Islamic mysticism to mystical thought in the West. The remainder of the book is devoted to two complementary essays: on 'Sympathy and Theosophy' and 'Creative Imagination and Creative Prayer'. A section of notes and appendices includes original translations of numerous Su fi treatises. Harold Bloom's preface links Sufi mysticism with Shakespeare's visionary dramas and high tragedies, such as "The Tempest and Hamlet". These works, he writes, intermix the empirical world with a transcendent element. Bloom shows us that this Shakespearean cosmos is analogous to Corbin's 'Imaginal Realm' of the Sufis, the place of soul or souls.

Einleitungssatz
In a treatise on "the hieratic art of the Greeks," Proclus, that lofty figure of late Neoplatonism whom scholars have so unjustly neglected, writes the following: Just as in the dialectic of love we start from senuous beauties to rise until we encounter the unique principle of all beauty and all ideas, so the adepts of hieratic science take as their starting point the things of appearance and the sympathies they manifest among themselves and with the invisible powers. Lesen Sie die erste Seite

2.0 von 5 Sternen Too much self glorification, 4. November 1999
Von Ein Kunde
As a Moslem growing up in Lebanon, I used to have some shai friends with whom I used to have heated debate about shia-sunni differences. I had access to some of the Shia books and sayings of their imams and got familiar with the basic shia beliefs. When I read Ibn Ul-Arabi for the first time, my first impression was he is a shia or very close to it. One doesn't have to be a scholar to realize this. Codkiewics disagrees with Corbin on Al-Arabi being a Shia , and he may be right. I think Corbin by making Al-Arabi a Shia, is trying to avoid the alternative, which is Al-Arabi taking shia ideas and tuck them under his cloak. This compromises Arabi's intellectual integrity. But to me that is not an unlikely scenario, especially with religious people who usually don't seem to have much moral problem in being dishonest, as long as it is done for the sake of God and in order to protect simple people from evil of the false beliefs of the other guys. Another thing that I find disturbing about Al-Arabi is his constant self glorification. He goes on and on with telling everyone how great he is and how the cosmos is his backyard. To me it is obvious he had some serious ego problem. Once or twice self glorification may be ok, but keep repeating it to the extend he does, it become so very annoying.

3.0 von 5 Sternen An accurate account of Ibn'-ulArabi, 31. Juli 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Anyone who is familiar with Shii sources like their hadith book Alkufi, would come to realise that many of the sufi doctorines is nothing but a mirror image of shia cult. Ibn'-ulArabi's writings and many of his sufi doctorines feel and smell like Shiism. One doesn't have to be a scholar to see that sufiism and shiism are both twin cults within Islamic world. I hope one of the great Sunni scholars would write a book, putting the Shia sources right next to the writings of these so called sufi masters and let the readers judge the matter for themselves . No need for scholars like Corbin or Chittic or someone else to tell us what we should or shoudn't believe about these wirters. As one of my educators from back home once warned " transitioning from Sufism to Shiism is easier than drinking water" and I think Ibn'ulArabi very cleverly implemented this very notion at the heart of Sunni Islam.
