Gründer des legendären Media Lab am Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT), Wired-Kolumnist (dessen deutsche Übersetzungen übrigens in K@nrad erscheinen), Vordenker einer vernetzten Welt: Nicholas Negroponte hat eine große Schar treuer Anhänger. Being Digital (im Deutschen Total Digital) ist eine überarbeitete Version von 18 Kolumnen, die Negroponte für Wired über dieses Thema geschrieben hat.

Großteils sind diese Texte eine Geschichte der Medientechnolgie, nicht eine der üblichen euphorischen Vorhersagen oder Ksssandrarufe kommender Technologien. Am Anfang beschreibt er die Entwicklung der CD-ROM, von Multimedia, Hypermedia, HDTV (High Definition Television) und mehr. Besonders interessant ist der ganze Bereich über Benutzeroberflächen -- Negroponte gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die Bereiche Grafik, VR (Virtual Reality), Hologramme, Tele-Conferencing, Spracherkennung und andere Eingabemöglichkeiten.

Erst im letzten Kapitel und im Epilog gibt Negroponte einen Ausblick darauf, was "Digitales Sein" für unsere Zukunft heißt. Er preist den Computer wegen seiner pädagogischen Möglichkeiten, erkennt aber auch Gefahren des technischen Fortschritts, beispielsweise den zunehmenden Software- und Datendiebstahl. Auch die Veränderungen, denen der Arbeitsmarkt unterworfen ist, betrachtet er mit gemischten Gefühlen. As the founder of MIT's Media Lab and a popular columnist for Wired, Nicholas Negroponte has amassed a following of dedicated readers. Negroponte's fans will want to get a copy of Being Digital, which is an edited version of the 18 articles he wrote for Wired about "being digital."

Negroponte's text is mostly a history of media technology rather than a set of predictions for future technologies. In the beginning, he describes the evolution of CD-ROMs, multimedia, hypermedia, HDTV (high-definition television), and more. The section on interfaces is informative, offering an up-to-date history on visual interfaces, graphics, virtual reality (VR), holograms, teleconferencing hardware, the mouse and touch-sensitive interfaces, and speech recognition.

In the last chapter and the epilogue, Negroponte offers visionary insight on what "being digital" means for our future. Negroponte praises computers for their educational value but recognizes certain dangers of technological advances, such as increased software and data piracy and huge shifts in our job market that will require workers to transfer their skills to the digital medium. I know, the title sounds so serious. But despite the fact that Being Digital was published and written five years ago does not lower its relevancy to the year 2000-and forward. Negroponte does a wonderful job on describing in recognizable and easy to understand language, the influence that computers, the internet, and digital media has been having over our lives...and how it will continue to grow.

There is almost a cynical touch to this book that certainly adds to its validity. Many people, (including me, when I can't get something to work) are fearful of technology and the rate at which it is growing. It is somewhat disquieting to see people spending thousands of dollars on a computer that will be obsolete in two years.

The quick synopsis on the back of this book begins with: "The book you are holding is probably obsolete: it consists of atoms, which are bulky and cumbersome to transport. And, increasingly, the dominant unit of human interaction are bits." Being Digital introduces the reader into the digital world-where bits (1's and 0's strung together) are hitting mainstream.

Bits are computer DNA, basically. Having a digital source (such as an mp3 or DVD) means that you can make perfect, exact copies of the strings of 1's and 0's on it. Thus, it is also an extremely high quality bit of media. (no pun intended, hehe) As more and more things are being transferred to bits-something I am just as guilty of as anyone else-it is becoming less and less important to actually have a physical (analog?) copy. For instance, since mp3s made their debut, many people have found no need for buying the CD-I mean, why? When you can download a perfectly equal copy, for free, no less, and either burn it to a CD, or put it on an mp3 player, or hell, even keep it in your hard drive.

The only (slight) problem with this book is the fact that it has been around for so long-well, a long time in technology standards. Published in 1995, it still remains relevant for us to explore where technology is taking us.

Being Digital introduces the reader to a world that may not be too familiar. The Information Superhighway is a vast array of collections of data and could easily trip up a first time user. Nicholas Negroponte begins by giving the reader some background information starting with the development of CD ROM drives. Negroponte enhances the read by making the language easy to understand and clear. What I gained from reading this book is a perspective once thought to be held only by the "Tech Freeks." Negrooponte points out the pluses as well as some minuses when dealing with this new technology. Bandwidth, HDTV, and the Internet in general are more clearly understood after reading Being Digital. Published in 1995, Being Digital was released at the emergence of an e-society so much of the information is old and known by now, but Negroponte is someone to listen to; co-founder of the MIT Media Lab. Being Digital allows the reader to truly understand the power of a bit in today's world.

Nicholas Negroponte's book Being Digital, is definitely a text for the nineties. The author gives us a realistic and candid observation on where we have come, where we are at, and some thoughts of the future of the information highway bit by bit. He gives his reader an informative history on many new technologies, especially multimedia. New technologies and how we communicate have and will continue to change our lives forever. He discusses the positives of the continuing evolution of information and those who benefit from new technologies. The benefits have touched education at all levels, helped the disabled, allowing them a connection to society they may have never been a reality without new computer technology. This electronic age is making our lives, in general, easier especially in our jobs. Job skills will have to evolve to accommodate this digital era. He gives an overview of the down side of the virtual community we now exist in, such as criminal mischief and the antiquated laws and regulations that plague the computer industry. All in all he gives us an optimistic view of information technology.
