Web Database Applications shows Web developers how to build rich Web database applications using two leading open-source technologies, PHP and MySQL. The authors also assume use of the Apache Web server, which is by far the most common PHP scenario. Both PHP and MySQL are introduced from scratch, although this is a fast-paced book best suited to at least intermediate developers.

After a brief discussion of Web database applications, the authors offer a rapid tour of PHP essentials, including loops, expressions, functions and common mistakes. Next comes a quick-start guide to MySQL, focusing mainly on the SQL language itself. The following chapters tackle connecting to MySQL and other databases, implementing user-driven queries and enabling writing as well as reading data. There is a useful chapter on data validation, both on the client and the server and excellent coverage of another crucial subject: security and authentication. This looks at the fundamentals of HTTP authentication and examines security features in both Apache and PHP, identifying weaknesses and explaining pros and cons. The closing chapters form a detailed case study, an online wine store, with complete code available for download. It embraces user management, a shopping cart, searching, ordering and delivery, covering many key topics in the process. At the back of the book are appendices on a range of issues, including installation, Web protocols, database modelling and session management.

Web Database Applications is tightly-focused, packing in lots of solid technical information without wasting words. It does not pretend to cover all the potential uses of PHP, and the screen shots will not win prizes for design, but it's a great handbook for building robust, secure database applications with these popular technologies. --Tim Anderson

PHP and MySQL go hand in hand; the former has been carefully adapted, through the efforts of the open-source community, to the latter. For situations that require dynamic content but don't merit the complexity and development time of Java or .NET enterprise applications, the PHP language and the MySQL database server fit the bill perfectly. That's the point Hugh Williams and David Lane make in Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, which combines language tutorials with application design advice to yield a comprehensive picture of its subjects at a reasonable price. Williams and Lane--both Australian academics who use an online wine store in many of their examples--deserve tremendous kudos for their way of presenting recommended coding strategies. Though the code listings themselves aren't remarkably well commented, the authors do a commendable job of explaining in prose what the code is up to.

Case in point: The ever-essential task of using PHP to open a connection to a MySQL database, submit a query to that database, receive a response, and format the returned rows, if any. The book addresses this problem with a straight code listing, followed by text that explains what's happening in five numbered steps. Similar care goes to the other popular applications of the PHP/MySQL duo: session management, shopping carts, and authentication of users. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to use the PHP server-side scripting language and the MySQL database engine to underlie dynamic Web sites (those that rely on database queries) and full-on Web applications, such as those that require session management and maintenance of user rosters. Tutorials in both subjects begin with the basics and proceed through moderately complicated stuff, though there's no absolutely comprehensive reference here.

If you need the "how-to" to built an internet web shop, here it is. It gives you an overview about php and mysql. There is an example wineshop (yes, you can find it on the web to play). The source code is written in the book. The authors describe user-driven querying, session management and security (also ssl!) and other related topics.
But be careful, its not the php starter book. Better learn php first with "Goto php" from D. Ammelburger.

Dies ist DER Leitfaden, um php shops fürs Internet zu bauen. Ein Beispiel-Weinshop im Internet und dessen source code im Buch verdeutlichen die Materie. Der Umgang mit php Abfragen der mysql Datenbank, php session management und Sicherheit (Secure socket layer) gehören mit zu den Inhalten.
Man sollte jedoch php Kenntnisse mitbringen, hier gehts um die größere Shop-Anwendung. Hierzu ist "Goto php" von D. Ammelburger zu empfehlen.

This book covers everything you need to know - from PHP variables to MySQL database development and management to PEAR to intricate application programming.
If you start with web database development and management, this is the book to look for. Every important topic is applied to a complete example - a winestore.
If you are already a pro, I'd recommend Paul Dubois.

The best thing this book offers is a very good writing style. This is one of the books I'd recommend anyone to read who wants to write or already did write a technical book her/himself. I had to read several books for my studies and I can't say that I know too many well written books.

This book is another felicitous piece in the large range of very good books published by O'Reilly. Based on a very useful case study of an online wine shop, it very thoroughly introduces the concepts of PHP and mySQL. It not only discusses mere functionality, but also security problems, style, reuse etc. It is an excellent read for people who have not too much programming experience; but most people who are interested in the subject of this book will be at least intermediate in some programming languages, I guess. And for them it might at some points be a bit lengthy (that's why it got only 4 stars from me). Nevertheless it's an extremely useful book to get into the matter and enables the reader to do her own database driven dynamic web sites or pages very soon.
