The Battle of Iwo Jima, fought in the winter of 1945 on a rocky island south of Japan, brought a ferocious slice of hell to Earth: in a month's time, more than 22,000 Japanese soldiers would die defending a patch of ground a third the size of Manhattan, while nearly 26,000 Americans fell taking it from them. The battle was a turning point in the war in the Pacific, and it produced one of World War Two's enduring images: a photograph of six soldiers raising an American flag on the flank of Mount Suribachi, the island's commanding high point. One of those young Americans was John Bradley, a Navy corpsman who a few days before had braved enemy mortar and machine-gun fire to administer first aid to a wounded Marine and then drag him to safety. For this act of heroism Bradley would receive the Navy Cross, an award second only to the Medal of Honour. Bradley, who died in 1994, never mentioned his feat to his family. Only after his death did Bradley's son James begin to piece together the facts of his father's heroism, which was but one of countless acts of sacrifice made by the young men who fought at Iwo Jima. Flags of Our Fathers recounts the sometimes tragic life stories of the six men who raised the flag that February day--one an Arizona Indian who would die following an alcohol-soaked brawl, another a Kentucky hillbilly, still another a Pennsylvania steel-mill worker--and who became reluctant heroes in the bargain. A strongly felt and well-written entry in a spate of recent books on World War Two, Flags of our Fathers gives a "you-are-there" depiction of that conflict's horrible arenas--and a moving homage to the men whom fate brought there. --Gregory McNamee -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

5.0 von 5 Sternen Truth Is Far More Revealing Than Myth, 14. Juni 2000
Diese Rezension stammt von: Flags of Our Fathers (Gebundene Ausgabe)
If you are like me, you have a whole story built up in your mind around one of the most famous photographs in American history -- the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. If you are also like me, there is little reality behind that story in your mind.

Written by the son of one flag-raising Marine, this amazing story should be read by everyone. It tells a tale of heroism, horrible circumstances, and the lasting consequences of an unexpected event in a compelling, unforgettable way. This book rivals All Quiet on the Western Front for its revealing insights into the nature of war, comradeship, and courage.

To set the stage, Iwo Jima was the first Japanese soil the Marines invaded. The Emperor had issued orders that the ground was to be defended to the last man. Iwo Jima was filled with tunnels that harbored over 20,000 Japanese troops who could shoot from relative safety while Americans were out in the open. The tunnel system was so extensive that Marines would literally be kidnapped while standing next to their buddies, and no one would know where they had gone. Rocks would suddenly open up to reveal mortars.

Tough fighting went on for days. The Marines lost 7,000 dead and had another 15,000 or more wounded out of 70,000 men. Ironically, the worst of the fighting came after the flag photograph, and three of the six Marines in the photograph died in this later action.

As tough as Iwo Jima was, living with the aftermath of the photograph was even harder in many ways. Two of the three survivors had their lives deeply affected in negative ways. The story of all three riveted me more than anything I have read in years.

I read fairly few books about war, but I cannot recommend this book enough to you. As Americans we owe it to those who fought in this battle to remember what actually happened and what the repercussions are. You will be moved at a deeper level than you can possibly imagine by this outstanding book.

Seriously, five stars are just too few for a monumental book like this one. This book is an instant classic that should live for all time!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A fitting tribute to the "Greatest Generation", 29. Juni 2000
Von Frank J. Konopka (Shamokin, PA) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen

We owe a lot to the men and women of the "Greatest Generation", many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we currently enjoy. Unfortunately, these brave folks are dying by the thousands every day, and soon their individual stories will be lost forever. Growing up, I was fascinated with World War II, in which my father had driven a tank destroyer, been wounded five times, and saw active duty from the invasion of North Africa to VE day. For some reason, I never sat down with him and discussed the war, and now that he's gone, I regret it deeply. We should take every opportunity to learn directly the stories of these folks, and what they experienced. This book is a welcome addition to the first-person narratives of the war that, thankfully, are coming out at this time. The sheer unassuming heroism of the Marines on Iwo Jima staggers the mind, and the fact that the survivors don't consider themselves heroes, is typical of that generation. The war left lasting memories on most of them, but they bore their burdens without complaint. My mother tells me that, for years after they were married, my father would get up in the middle of the night with terrible headaches, the result of a head wound. As a child, I never knew this about him, but the quiet and serenity with which he bore this pain only makes me love him more, and appreciate him more, if such a thing is possible. We must not forget what they did for us, and reading this book will help. Please buy it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Moving, Impressive and Unforgettable Reading Experience!, 7. Juni 2000
Von Barron Laycock "Labradorman" (Temple, New Hampshire United States) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
(REAL NAME)
Diese Rezension stammt von: Flags of Our Fathers (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Every once in a while, a book comes along that defies easy description, a tome destined to be a smash success and win well deserved praise, precisely because it is written so well, is so accessible and readable, and so memorably ties together several different elements into a storyline that makes perfect sense, tells a wonderful and memorable story in a completely different way, and is also a credible work of descriptive history. This, friends, is such a memorable book.

This book works extremely well at several levels. First, it is the first-person story behind one of the most famous battle photographs of world war two, the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. It proceeds to tell us the poignant story of the six men in the photograph and their families from the families' recollections. It also tells us of the tragedies and later lives of each of the three surviving Marines, only one of whom survived to live what we could describe as a normal life. It also gives us insight into what these men were beyond the headlines, the parades, and the hyperbole, and what participation in the murderous military campaign in the South Pacific and the later hoopla meant to them, their families and to the rest of their lives.

Finally, it is an excellent, first-person, man on the ground kind of description of the day to day battle on Iwo Jima, which was much harder fought and much more bloody than even the military expected it would be. One stands in awe of this work based on the simple fact that it has been written fifty years after the fact, and yet is clearly the book one recognizes to be the definitive book on a particular subject. From here on, no one who considers himself or herself a student of the Second World War in the South Pacific against the Japanese can feel fully educated or properly informed about the battle for Iwo Jima and its aftermath until they've read "Flags Of Our Fathers". This is history come alive, made real, relevant, still timely and accessible. This is a book for everyone's history book shelves. Read it now, and savor it forever.
