Envisioning a possible future (and attacking present folly), Le Guin reinvents a ``primitive'' past. The autobiography of a woman of the Kesh, living in the Napa Valley in a distant post-Industrial age, occupies 100 pages. The rest of the book (and a cassette) provide documentation of Kesh spiritual and material culture, from kinship and language to arts and philosophy. Dancing their oneness with nature, valuing cooperation over competition, the Kesh survive contact with the hieratic, war-making, death-dealing Condors, who are a lot like us. If it's hard to believe in a people who use computers and electricity but plow with oxen and see wealth as giving, that's part of the point. The narrative is interrupted by poems, tales, and ``data,'' which demand patient pondering--something Le Guin's many admirers are certain to provide. Mit unglaublicher Liebe zum Detail entwickelt Ursula K. LeGuin hier die Vision einer Welt in der fernen Zukunft Kaliforniens aus der Sicht von Stone Telling, einer Bewohnerin des "Valley" aus dem Volk der Kesh. Gedichte, Geschichten über Liebe, Haß und Krieg, Zeichnungen usw. ziehen den Leser tief in diese Welt und lassen nicht los. Zusätzlich zum Buch ist auch eine Audio-CD erhältlich, die Musik und Gedichte der Kesh präsentiert. Le Guin zu lesen bedeutet immer, die Worte selbst so sehr zu genießen wie den Inhalt, und auch auf dieser Ebene enttäuscht die Autorin nicht und beweist nachdrücklich, warum sie zu den Größen der Fantasy gehört.

In a distant future the people of the Kesh live on the Western Coast of North America. They are a small people, rather isolated, living in villages and some small towns. They have no big industry, only small craftmanship and agriculture. There is a complicated system of family relationships, all people belonging to one of five houses.There are four other houses, the wild ones. There is an interesting religion concerning those five houses, but no personal God or Goddess.
The book tells the story of the woman always coming home, who is the daughter of a man from the warloving patriarchal countries outside. For some time he had been the lover of a Kesh woman, and now he has returned to Kesh to visit her, and his daughter decides that she wants to come with him.
But life with her father turns out to be rather bad, as women live the life of women in a traditional patriarchal society. It's not so bad as long she lives at her father's but it gets worse when she is married. With the luck and the help of her father she manages to escape and to return to Kesh.
There are some minor stories as well, and there are a lot of texts that are "non-fictional", telling no stories at all, but describing the society and tradition of the Kesh. It's rather those "non-fictional" parts that make the book interesting - the society presented to us by U.K.LeGuin is absolutely worth reading and learning about it, while the story of the woman Aways Coming Home is rather boring and full of cliches.
So: Leave out the big story and read the rest!
